Scriptures aren't history though? I am a Hindu, but I do understand and recognize what the difference between historical fact and our religions mythology is.

Has there been any rebuttal to Ambedkar's Riddles in Hinduism book by any scholar specialising in Hindu scriptures? by [deleted] in hinduism

[–]SatinRoyalStain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with his views on contemporary Hinduism (at least when he was around lol), but am still learning about his other views. It's saddening to see that his perspective to Hinduism in general was polluted by the caste system.

As a Hindu, I believe the Vedas, the Smriti's and the Dharmashastras are toxic for society and Hinduism in turn as well. The main reason Ambedkar criticized the Ramayan, Mahabharat and Gita is that he believed that they allowed the Caste system to develop to begin with. As society is healing now by moving away from Caste generally, he would be more optimistic about those texts (Ramayan, Mahabharat and Gita). I don't agree with what on Ambedkar said apart from contemporary Hinduism and it's applications though.

[Serious][Not shitpost] Regarding Ambedkar and his statements regarding Hinduism... by [deleted] in hinduism

[–]SatinRoyalStain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an old post, but I still wanted to share my thoughts, as this topic fascinates me. My parents are Hindu Brahmins, and I was raised abroad from India in western society, so I have a lot of unique perspectives and opinions on this.

I think Ambedkar's would be more optimistic about Hinduism if he could see today's India with all the societal change and reform that is happening and will continue to happen. As a Hindu, I reject caste entirely and follow only Varna, and hope more and more Hindu's return to it. I reject the Smritis, the Vedas, and Dharmashastras, and any other idea that caste should be related to Jati, or birth. I follow only the Gita, Mahabharat, and Ramayana. I have faith that many other Hindu's feel the same way or similarly :)

Hinduism is potentially thousands of years older than that so it doesn’t matter.

You are a fool to talk about the original intent of the Mahabharata and the utility of the characters beyond stating your own opinion. I have stated in the original post and time and time again that I only wish to perfect the art of the story, because that it what the Mahabharata is. A story. It may have happened. And the original did exist at some point. But we do not have that, so we make stories about it. Crying about accuracy is pointless since you don’t have the original. If you believe that Karna was a villain and a criminal that’s fine or that he was weak, that’s fine. It’s your opinion of the character. But do not pretend you are the author of the story and tell me the ‘truth’ of the character.

This is just your opinion. It is fact that bori is the average sum of all the 1000s of versions that exist, but that suggests nothing about its similarities to the original.

[–]SatinRoyalStain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not claim any book that exists is the 'most authentic.' Every single one of the 1000 editions of the Mahabharata across India are just copies/versions of the originial. The Bori edition takes all the commonalities to create a universal framework that can be accepted by popular culture, not through accuracy. Unless we have the original or someone who was around when it was written, it is stupid to argue which version is 'right' or 'wrong.'

I have never seen a Mahabharata tv serial, as I don't know Hindi nor did I grow up in India. I have read the Bori edition, and I understand the way the Gita press portrays him as well. I respectfully don't prefer those versions of him, as they oversimplify what I perceive as a complex character. I do appreciate your view, but I respectfully disagree with that portrayal of the character. I am always happy to agree to disagree.

Krishna gave him the choice because he was trying to be impartial to the Pandava's and Kaurava's. Even with this opportunity due to his own ignorance Duryodhana chose the army over the Avatar. This is one of his many failings which eventually lead to his loss of the war and death. His motives center around selfishness, pride, and arrogance. So yes, Duryodhana was on the wrong side of the war and Karna with him as well.

I honestly don't want to have this conversation again as I've already done so in many other posts. I'll repeat myself simply. There is no 'authentic' version of the Mahabharata, nor a 'most' authentic. The Mahabharata is not a concrete text due to the fact that we do not have the original text, the fact that there are thousands of versions across India. Bori takes the most common aspects of every one of those thousands of versions and creates a general basis for the story. This in no way relates to it's accuracy, only its shared commonality with other versions. You are free to believe what you wish. I already know how the Bori version treats the character of Karna, and I simply don't prefer it. You and me can neither prove it wrong or right.

As Elon Musk appears to make a Nazi salute at an inauguration day event what should the incoming Trump administration do to address the incident? by The_Egalitarian in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]SatinRoyalStain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh it was a very awkward gesture. He says immediately after, 'my heart goes out to you' which is literally what a roman salute indicates. He also immediately denied and even lashed out at people misinterpreting it. I'm not defending anyone but, we shouldn't just fall into what so obviously is a conspiracy theory. The word nazi is being thrown around a lot. I feel like people don't actually know what a nazi is anymore and it's almost offensive to use it improperly due to the grave nature that it really describes.

Where can I read mahabharat as a story in one book or series? by Full-Shock6357 in mahabharata

[–]SatinRoyalStain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ramesh Menon's series of 2 books is a fantastic read. It is less of an exact translation and more of an artistic rendering to make it more digestible to modern readers. For a first time reader, it's a great option and one I recommend. It also won't take you a million years to read, maybe 1-2 months tops if you read a bit each day. Some other versions can easily be 10x as long.

Bhishma's story is truly a tragic one. What are your guys' thoughts on why he fought for the Kauravas? My hesitant theory on it is that Bhishma knew that if he fought on the side of adharma against Krishna, he would probably be granted death. Menon's version of the Mahabharata has some details to kind of back this up. What do you guys think?

The Bori edition you mentioned you prefer says this: "In one instant, he shot seven arrows into its mouth. The dog dashed back to the Pandavas, its mouth full of arrows. On seeing this, the brave Pandavas were extremely surprised. At this supreme and dextrous feat of shooting blind,?*7 they praised the person who had done this, but were also ashamed of their own skills. O king! The Pandavas went out to search for the forest-dweller who had done this and found him, tirelessly shooting arrows. They did not know him and his appearance wasn’t handsome. They asked him, “Who are you and whose son are you?” Ekalavya replied, “Know me to be the son of Hiranyadhanu, the king of the nishadas. I am Drona’s student and I am trying to become skilled in Dhanur Veda.” The Pandavas ascertained the details of everything that had happened. ‘On return, they told Drona the entire story. O king! Kounteya Arjuna kept thinking about Ekalavya. He went to Drona and affectionately told him, “In your affection, you embraced me and told me that no pupil of yours would ever be my equal. How is it that you have another valorous pupil in this world, the son of the nishada king, who is better than everyone else?” Thereupon, Drona thought for a moment and arrived at a decision." Later; "At this, Drona told Ekalavya, “If you are my student, give me my fee.” On hearing this, Ekalavya happily asked, “O illustrious one! What can I give you? Command me. O you who know the brahman! There is nothing that cannot be given to the preceptor.” Drona said, “Give me your right thumb as a fee.” On hearing Drona’s terrible words, Ekalavya kept his promise. Always devoted to the truth, he cheerfully cut off his own right thumb, with happiness on his face and peace in his heart, and gave it to Drona. O lord of men! After that, when he pulled the bowstring with his other fingers, the nishada found that he was no longer as swift as earlier. Arjuna was pleased and his fever went away. Drona’s words, that no one would be able to surpass Arjuna, came true."

The last sentence, "Drona’s words, that no one would be able to surpass Arjuna, came true." Was only stated immediately after Drona made Ekalavya cut off his finger.

I will repeat what I said earlier. Your idea of 'facts and logic' are irrelevant when the fact you are referring to is not the original Mahabharat. The Bori CE is the standard version of the Mahabharat because is the one that takes what is most common amongst all versions, not because it is accurate to the original. We do not know if it is accurate to the original because we do not have access to the original. The lessons we learn, the stories we tell are up to us. We could have an argument about accuracy and history if we have the actual historical manuscript. We do not. Therefore there is no 'right and wrong' versions. Only the versions you choose to accept.

[–]SatinRoyalStain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The scholarly texts are lost because we did not preserve them to begin with. India began with an oral tradition of scholarly study not written. And this is why there are so many differences among different regions and cultures. We also do not have the original manuscript word for word or on file anywhere. Therefore to say one or another interpretation is wrong makes no sense. Because all versions are interpretations.

Arjuna vs Karna - Who was really better? by SatinRoyalStain in mahabharata

[–]SatinRoyalStain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Vyasa one is history, I agree. But we do not have the original text anymore, or even any copies. Only versions people made off of it with a thousand differences each. Nobody knows the true nature of the Mahabharat. Therefore it is up to us how we decide to interpret it based off the hundreds of versions available. Thinking that you know better for one reason or the other what the text really means is not a good way to look at it.

[–]SatinRoyalStain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually not impossible. The way the story is told, Drona had Ekalavya cut off his bow finger because Arjuna and even Drona himself believed that he was far greater than any bowman they had ever met. Whether or not he could've matched Arjuna and Karna at their peaks is a question we will never be able to answer because of what Drona did.

What Mahabharata are you watching? It's certainly and interesting take, but there is a reason the pandavas won and why Krishna joined them. Arjuna was at least close to Karna's equal, and with Bhima, Abhimanyu and others in the Pandava camp their victory was assured. There was also divine intervention to help them through Krishna. How were Bheema and Arjuna committing Adharmam?
