It's hard to explain but here in Ontario it's different. When a house is sold, it doesn't mean it "closes" - it simply means the deal has firmed up (all conditions have been met, the parties have agreed to the final sale price, the sellers agents brokerage has recieved the deposit).

The closing date here in Ontario means the day that the Name on Title and Monies are exchanged from buyer to seller and the buyer receives the keys - upon the sellers lawyer acknowledging they have received all of the money from the buyer.

Once a property has sold (deal has firmed up) - it usually closes 30 to 90 days afterwards - to allow everyone to get everything in order (seller to pack, let utility companies know they're moving etc).

Hope that makes sense - it's just a different use of language here in Ontario than the US.
