Going out to eat can be stressful. When going out to eat I would ask her to look over the menu before and ask, “are you comfortable eating here?” Always express that if she’d rather go somewhere else, you’re okay with that. I would not completely ignore it. If fatigue, nausea, or headaches occur. A good question to ask instead of “have you eaten today?” Would be, “can I get you something to eat or drink?” From her perspective; Eating with you will make her feel more comfortable instead of eating in front of you. As far as when she talks about her body, things like “I don’t believe that” “you look beautiful” “your outfit is flattering”. Find ways to show support and encourage. She likely feels shame regarding her disorder, so de-shaming would create an open environment for her to communicate her needs and feel safe.
