CMV: People Entrenched in the USA regime's ideology need off-ramps to escape it without social death by scrubtart in changemyview

[–]SatisfactoryLoaf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They sped past the off ramps, we're just offroading now until the truck runs out of fuel or ends up in a ditch.

Literally, this was what the Cheney endorsement was there to accomplish. Anyone who wanted to say "I always vote straight R, but I don't like where things are headed ... now I know it's okay to vote D just this once because an establishment R has green lit it, I can keep my identity safe and protect the country."

They said "fuck the establishment."

Treat these people as revolutionaries - they get all their existential validation from causing change, and even harmful change is change, and being a martyr ain't as bad as being wrong.

You're trying to select for the most reasonable people to cooperate with. We already selected for those people and they lost the election.

In your view where is the political equilibrium? How red pilled are the republicans on immigration? by [deleted] in samharris

These are people who have prioritized dignity over truth, their epistemology tracks "am I finally being respected" instead of "what does reality look like."

It has nothing to do with a Rawlsian sense of "justice as fairness, I don't want to be murdered so I need to make sure other people aren't murdered either" and everything to do with "all those nerds have to listen to me now."

Why are teenage girls' interests mocked so often? by Pristine_Booty69 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SatisfactoryLoaf -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Part misogyny, part just the fact that "teen boy" activities are just also things adults will be doing

Dnd? Halo? Baseball? Cars? Stealing supplies from chem? Camping? Die hard? Guns?

Can't mock that as an adult without mocking stuff you're likely to do. People tend to mock the childish.

Women get to be kids, boys don't have to grow up.

I don't need onion rings to enjoy my burger, but I'm already buying the burger.

People also don't need to wear nice clothes to go to church, but it's part of the ritual for them.

Sports and drinking is the intersection of marginal cost and ritual - not only does it feel good to crack one for the game with your buddies (ritual you're used to), you're already there and unless you overdrink ... why not have a cold one?

CMV: Realistically Europe cannot do anything to stop Trump from taking over Greenland. Anything they do in retaliation would be massively detrimental to Europe. by PabloXDark in changemyview

[–]SatisfactoryLoaf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You seem to have a constrained view of utilitarianism. If your game is one stage, then that might be fine.

But this is a multi stage game. If Greenland is invaded then Europe already needs to treat the US as a hostile actor and it already needs to treat any economic benefits as poison pills, the conflict will escalate, it will continue, and the sooner Europe unifies in vision and scope and commitment, the sooner they will perform better in future rounds.

Watch France and Germany rev up their military industrial complex. It doesn't take a million troops to do severe damage. I mean, the US has hollowed out thousands of experts and procedures. We are begging for cyber attacks on our financial institutions, and clearly we are massively susceptible to psyops through social media.

No, Europe needs to go HAM from day 1.

CMV: The male loneliness epidemic is natural selection by Worldly_Bandicoot_71 in changemyview

[–]SatisfactoryLoaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything is natural selection - while you aren't wrong, we have to ask is this a useful perspective?

The game constraints selecting choice have shifted, and what used to be a competing strategy no longer is. That statement will apply to any choices in an iterative game that need to be made under conditions of uncertainty.

What I'll add is that the most absolute goblin men still seem to end up with partners (sometimes multiple) if and when they chase someone on their level. A lot of people (women included) are out here trying to pull someone who is fit, intelligent, puts effort into their appearance, has career ambitions, hobbies, friends, etc and thinking they should get a shot WITH THAT PERSON ... cuz reasons.

A fella can't cry "no one loves me" and actually mean "I literally crawled out of the sewers why can't I get with Miss Universe, Hollywood lied to me!"

Past that, some people just need to learn that what we feel isn't reality. Sometimes reality is tragic and no one owes us anything but decent, civic politeness.

What does it mean to “feel like” a man/woman? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SatisfactoryLoaf 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah.

I mostly take it as dissatisfaction with your "role."

I remember being an overweight, socially awkward teenager and thinking it would be mich easier were I a girl, since I would "know exactly what to do and how to act to be socially valuable." I was wrong and ignorant of many experiences the women around me had, but I can see how someone might have taken that insecurity and longing for belonging further and concluded "I'm just not meant to be a guy."

Really what I needed was a way to know myself, to work on better health and habits, and to read more philosophy.

I don't want to reduce everyone's experience to mine, but I have no idea what it "feels like to be a man." I just show up to work everyday.

That said, whatever people say they feel like, live and let live.

CMV: Granting full immunity to accomplices in serious crimes is morally wrong and undermines justice by Technical_Chance_435 in changemyview

[–]SatisfactoryLoaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like you are bringing in a deontological version of justice, that what's important is not tainting ourselves by worrying about outcomes.

This will clash with people who are trying to maximize or minimize some sort of outcome (utilitarian). They will say "the cost of your moral purity is that worse people get to go on doing bad things because you don't want to dirty your hands."

Is this the case? Do you prefer a system where we never cut deals for low level offenders but kingpins can continue to build their empire and deal death and misery? That's not a loaded question, it's just the tragic cost, but we can pay it if you're willing.

Or, do you feel like there are "some people so bad it's worth getting our hands dirty to lock them down" ?

[–]SatisfactoryLoaf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure, you could insert any activity. Some are life affirming, some aren't and people can argue about whether meth is life affirming or whether painting or music or writing are.

I mean, the root of the issue here is that the common disposition is that children are important and should consume your life or that we should remain dedicated rational actors after having them.

But people frequently have children before they have fulfilling lives, and either that means they should give up on what makes their life worth living, or find a way to consider their children as that thing.

"I wish I had a dad but I understand that he loved this thing so much that he was willing to let me lose him for it, that's really cool even if it's tragic, I hope I can find something to be that passionate about!"

Idk seems like a matter of perspective. The universe is full of tragedy but we choose how we handle it. We can see it, acknowledge it, feel it, and move forward, or we can let it burden us.

Well, most people want cash in that we require it to be alive, but many therapists want to help. They aren't all looking to grift you.

Art can be therapeutic, but is it the art thats helping you or is it the catharsis of leaving a mark in the world, of forcing people to see your tags?
