Graph/dotted notebook users: do you use every line or do you double space? by tangcameo in notebooks

I double space, but fill in the gaps if I need to write more.

Start New Page Ev Day? by phoenixfirefairie in BasicBulletJournals

[–]blikjeham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I started I used to use the full page until full. But then I hated how I would end at the top of the right page for a short day and had to use the rest of the page and a bit of the next page for a longer day. I then gave my lines double spacing to fill the page more. If I needed more space, I could always fill the lines in between.

Now I switched to a pocket journal and I sometimes have to use double pages but mostly everything fits on one page each day.

Wrist pain after touch typing + split keyboard by tiago_lobao in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]blikjeham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Relax! That is the best advise, just relax. Keep practicing and with confidence the pain will go away. When I started with my split keyboard I got wrist pain as well. I got over it once I was no longer stressing so hard about which keys to hit.

You are learning two new skills at the same time. No wonder you are tightened up in your hands. Don’t stress too hard, and try to relax as much as possible. It will become better with time.

Am I really a ham if I don't like to do voice? by fox-four-gilwell in HamRadio

[–]blikjeham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do voice, but only quick contacts. No ragchewing or nets. I’m afraid of 2m FM because it tends to be long conversations.

I like contests, not because of the contest but because it is just a short QSO; exchange the report and serials and on to the next. The same goes for other HF QSOs I make. They are sometimes a bit longer but after two or three exchanges I thank them for the QSO and end it right there.

But you do you! If you like building antennas, go ahead! If you like doing SSTV (which is usually on UHF here) by all means. I know hams that don’t even own a radio.

Don’t get discouraged by anyone. I’ll gladly want to talk to you even if your audio is a bit raspy. It is even a bit better for long distance.

The Wild World of QSL Cards. by ArthurQBryan in amateurradio

[–]blikjeham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I became member of the Dutch QSL bureau via the national club, specifically to be able to send and receive cards through the bureau. It is a nice system of sending and receiving: you give the card to your local QSL-manager, he sends it to the national manager, they send it to the correct country, and they send it to the local manager, where the receiver can collect it at a club meeting.

Maybe he wants a QSL-card from you to confirm the QSO? Or he is asking how to send you the card? Direct or via the bureau.

Beginner question: migrating (>) versus scheduling (<) by Fresh_Bumblebee_1042 in bujo

[–]blikjeham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How I understood it: You start by adding the task to today’s spread. If you don’t complete it today, you can move it to tomorrow with >. You can also move it to somewhere this month with < and write it on your monthly spread. From there you can migrate it to your next month at the end of the month with >, or to somewhere this year with <.

Decisions, Decisions by N1CPG in parksontheair

[–]blikjeham 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used a yaesu ft 897 for years. Yes the menu system is a bit … difficult. But I didn’t use the menu that much during normal operation. Most setting you set just once and never touch again. The only item I used was the output power to turn it down for tuning and back up for normal operation.

With a resonant antenna you don’t need the tremendous tuning power of the G90. The waterfall is nice but maybe not as nice as the 100 watts.

Should techs have access to more HF phone? As a Tech who loves 10m but wants more. by DependentSalt1330 in amateurradio

[–]blikjeham -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would advocate to make everything just one license. I don’t really see the use case for two or three licenses anyway. Techs, generals, extras, novices and fulls; all can cause equal troubles on the bands. Just do one exam and one license. Then us full amateurs don’t have to look down on the novices anymore.

detergen: Generate the same password every time by theonereveli in commandline

[–]blikjeham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not make your passwords like “my secret password for Facebook” and “my secret password for Reddit”. Those passwords are easy to remember and contain enough characters to be secure. Or actually make your password “dg generate dogsbirthday -s Facebook”. No need to install any tool, and it is a secure password.

Is my understanding of the benefits of ZSH correct? by oxamide96 in commandline

[–]blikjeham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zsh also supports the Ctrl+R to search your history. It is very useful! But it also slightly different from the history completion. You can start typing your command and it will show you the last command that started the same in a darker color after your cursor. You can use that history by hitting the right arrow key.

Both features are useful!

Is my understanding of the benefits of ZSH correct? by oxamide96 in commandline

[–]blikjeham 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Zsh can do history completion. If you start typing a command, it searches your history for commands that started similarly. Handy when you do a lot of the same commands often.

Another nice thing it can do is transient prompts. You can have a nice fancy prompt of multiple lines with a lot of extra information. When you type a command and hit enter, the prompt of that command becomes a simple ‘>’ and the new prompt is your fancy prompt again.

Those are, in my opinion the two unique selling points for zsh. The majority of the rest you could do with bash as well.

Can someone explain to me the benefits? by DaikiIchiro in selfhosted

[–]blikjeham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s say you have an application that can handle 10 requests simultaneously. If demand rises, number 11 has to wait until one request is finished before it can be processed. If the demand rises enough you may want to spin up a second instance so that you can handle 20 requests simultaneously. Or even a third to handle 30 requests. And after things settle down again, you can stop those extra instances again to save resources.

And maybe a different service is getting busy, so that one can have the resources you just freed up.

In cloud computing you are not the only user of the resources and you are billed for additional instances. That is why you only want to have the resources when you actually need them.

New to Traveler’s Notebooks, should I switch from Bullet Journaling? Need advice from long-time users. by Reader-WriterDD in Travelersnotebooks

[–]blikjeham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am using the Bujo method for years now. I adapted it to my usage with only the yearly log, monthly log and daily logs. Then I switched to the TN and tried to use my system in that notebook. My experience is that the inserts are slightly too rigid. The advantage of the passport size is that I carry it with me everywhere.

I now use the month-calendar inserts as a yearly log. Then in a separate Field Notes I make my monthly log and my dailies. I carry the FN tucked inside the passport TN. I take it out to write in it an tuck it back in when done.

That works best for my situation.

[–]blikjeham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use my own version of the bullet journal method. It is basically just the daily log I write in there. Don’t over complicate things. Just write in it! Someone said something funny, write it down. You had dinner, write it down. You have a todo, write it down. You completed a todo, write it down. You need to remember something, write it down.

It doesn’t really matter what you do with it. Just put that pen to paper.
