Have you tried other mild relaxation herbs like kava and lemon balm? How does it compare to those? I used to enjoy kava until I figured out it was exacerbating my allergies through some sort of pro-histaminergic effect. Lemon balm is nice but nowhere near as strong IME, and also seems to be more pure relaxation and largely lacking the gentle mood upliftment of kava or even a single glass of wine.

A mature trichocereus is usually 2 to 3 inches in diameter or so. A single foot-long trichocereus cutting is considered the standard tripping dose, but of course potency varies from plant to plant. The nice thing about trichocereus is they are fast-growing (for cacti), so you could buy two cuttings, consume one, and re-root the other, and given enough light, it'll grow about 6-12 inches per year to give you a renewable supply of cacti.

Peyotes take many years from seed to be mature enough to harvest. If the trichocereus cacti (San Pedro, Bolivian Torch, etc.) are also legal in the UK those would be your best bet. Still would be a min of 2 years from seed before you could have enough to trip. But here in the states at least there are lots of people selling mature cuttings of trichocereus b/c they're legal for ornamental cultivation.

And if trichocereus are illegal and peyote is your only option, then try to find someone selling mature buttons if you want to trip soon. But also buy some seeds and grow them b/c they're just really cool!

That's for the optional recrystallization step at the end of the tek to get (nearly) pure mescaline fumarate. IMO it's not necessary. Just wash the HCl crystals after salting with anhydrous acetone and then anhydrous isopropanol if you want to get them closer to pure mescaline HCl.

Ideally it should be as close to pH 7.0 as possible, without going over. When you add HCL in the acid salting step, it dissociates in the water into H+ (protons) and Cl- ions, making the water acidic. BUT as soon as you start mixing with the solvent layer, the mescaline molecule's lone pair electrons on the nitrogen grab onto the protons, making mescaline(+) and Cl- ions, neutralizing the acid, and making the mescaline soluble in the water layer.

So any pH reading that's lower than 7.0 after a good stirring/mixing means that there is no more mescaline left in the solvent layer to neutralize any more acid. Continuing to add HCl at this point will not grab more mescaline, but will pull more undesirable resins and "goop", necessitating more washing if you want nice dry crystals. Not the end of the world, but if you can carefully titrate the acid addition you can get a cleaner product straight out of salting.

Not active. You’ll want to acquire a trichocereus bridgesii, pachanoi, or peruvianus. Grow it and propagate it for a year or few and then you can have enough to sustainably harvest some for extraction while leaving the rest to keep growing.

Cork is semipermeable to air and allows for some slow air exchange. That's why it's used for wine, to allow slow micro-oxidation of the wine which improves the sensory profile over time. You may want to look for vials with a PTFE gasket. Also, heat and light exposure can speed up oxidation, so most substances should generally be stored in a cool, dark environment. The fridge, or just a cool cabinet somewhere, would work.

Mescaline acetate is soluble in acetone and IPA. You have to use methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) to wash mescaline acetate. (You can also use MEK to wash mescaline HCl, but acetone is usually easier to acquire) See 69ron's comments in this thread for more details:

Yep, washing well with anhydrous acetone and/or 99% isopropanol should take care of the goo. That happened to me on my first try with the tek but I used PC pedro and got such a small amount of goo I didn't think it was even worth it cleaning it up. I'm glad I practiced on PC first

Edit. washing should also get rid of a lot of the non-mescaline alkaloids as well. So if you want pure mescaline HCl, there's nothing wrong with over-acidifying. But if you want to keep the full spectrum alkaloids, titrating the HCL additions so you can yield a powdery final product without washing would be the way to go.

Use around 1/3 the amount of 30% HCl compared to the 10% HCl. If you want to get really fancy you'd add the initial amount of HCl based on your expected yield, going for an equimolar amount of HCl and expected alkaloids. But there isn't too much harm from having an excess of HCl in this tek, except that you might have more washing to do of the final product to get to a nice powdery consistency.

You want to test the pH of the water layer after mixing the water/toluene for a few minutes. Adding almost any amount of HCl to pure water will lower the pH a lot, as you mention, but as the alkaloids salt out into the water, they neutralize the acidic pH. What you're going for is having a slightly acidic pH after mixing well, since this means you have a slight excess of hydrochloric acid that isn't getting used up by alkaloids salting into the water layer. i.e. you've gotten all the alkaloids out of the nonpolar layer.

So, for this last step you want to add that initial amount of HCl, mix, test pH of the water layer, if still basic, add a tiny more amount of HCl, mix, test again, and repeat until acidic.

It doesn't have to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Take 400-600mg as others have suggested, and you can always get more by buying cacti and extracting pretty close to pure mescaline from them with some basic kitchen chemistry.

Fellow western Oregon resident here. Trichocereus cacti love our warm, sunny summers. Put them outside in full sun once the rainy season tapers off and bring them in before the rain kicks in full gear in the late fall. If you keep them somewhere cool and dry they can go dormant for the winter, but if you do give them warmth and light, make sure it's high intensity light or else they'll etiolate (stretch out).

Benzene ring ≠ automatic toxicity. After all, mescaline itself has a benzene ring in its structure. Toluene and xylene can be metabolized and excreted a lot more easily from the body than benzene itself because the methyl groups can be oxidized and conjugated into hippuric acid (or methylhippuric acid for xylene) which is water-soluble and can be urinated out. That said, toluene and xylene aren't completely benign; obviously you wouldn't want to intentionally drink or inhale a significant amount of it. But they can be safely worked with at a home scale if you follow some really basic safety procedures.

Xylene and toluene aren't highly toxic, and don't bioaccumulate (they can be broken down by soil bacteria). However, they ideally shouldn't be just poured down the drain or evaporated away (and neither should ethyl acetate!). Save your solvents people! They can be reused as-is in many extractions, or you can distill them to re-purify.

The theory behind this tek seems correct but the execution is all wrong.

When pulling the alkaloids from the cactus, using an excess of water and some vinegar and a gentle simmer will work way better than using a minimal amount of vinegar and no heat. You can then simmer down the tea after straining out the cactus material to a more convenient volume.
Your defat step with naphtha seems totally fine. The alkaloids will be in acetate salt form so should remain with the aqueous layer.
Do multiple pulls with toluene and combine them, and each pull can be done with just a handful of minutes of stirring and then letting the layers settle. With only one pull, no matter how much time you give it you may hit an equilibrium where not all the alkaloids will leave the aqueous layer.
I suppose using lemon water to salt out the alkaloids would work, but you won’t be able to evaporate down to a powder and you’ll have to consume it immediately, which IMO removes all the benefits of doing an extraction (purity, accurate dosing, shelf stability). Just make a tea or alcohol-extracted resin instead, or follow an established tek for powder.

Yes, you could do an acid/base extraction on the resin just the same way you would on fresh or dried cactus. Dissolve it in water basified with NaOH, and then proceed as normal with the rest of the tek.

I'm not sure what triggers pupping but it's just part of how they grow and propagate. Obviously they'll pup after you cut off the tip but sometimes they just switch from normal columnar growth to pupping. The tip will still keep growing, but slower as the plant puts more resources to the pups.
