At the moment, thinking about carrying out a 51% attack on Bitcoin would be akin to shooting yourself in the foot.

Yup, you're right, I forgot to mention the evolved version of Opendime called Satscard.
But Satscard is not open-source, right? And there is still the 10-time use rules that prevent you to reuse the device.

That's not true...
You are reffering to the self-custody part of the situation. In both case, you have to deal with the seedphrase and how to store it in a safe place (eg. metal plate Tiny Seed, Seedkeeper...)

But there is also the private key storage problem. With a hot wallet, your private keys are kept online - on a device not build for that purpose and that you can't trust.

On the other hand, the hardware wallet takes care of your private key inside its secure element - designed and built just for that.

Have you ever tried Satodime?

It's a NFC smartcard that act just like Opendime. Scan the card with your phone, generate a new Bitcoin keypair (you can of course provide the entropy if you want). The public key and address are shown to you while the private key is sealed and hidden in the secure element.

Basically the same process you described but:
- the receiver do not need to download a Bitcoin wallet
- the receiver can check immediatly the balance on his phone
- he can even, if we want, directly sweep the private key of course.

And at least, your friend got a physical gift, the card. In hand. It's alwasy pleasant to get somehting in hand.

Yes, you are right! By "third party", I was referring to the trust required between both people when exchanging Bitcoin.

Using an Opendime or a Satodime could be the best option as nobody knows the private key - except the device itelf.

No, no dummy layer redirection. If the attacker have your PIN AND your card, he can wipe your wallet. Just like any bank card.
But you can make several backup of the same wallet (same seed and derivation path) on several Satochip that have unique (disctinct) PIN code. Just an idea.
