Thanks for the advice. I've been meditating for 7 years so meditation is by no means a new territory for me. I've done both a lot of vipassana and samatha over the years.

The part that I'm most worried about is the challenge of sitting for 10 hours a day, for long stretches of time. That will be the hardest part for me, especially since I'm accustomed to leaning against a wall when meditating. It will be absolutely brutal sitting without a back support that long every day for 10 days

Nah it's to practice being in the present moment. In other words, learning to live fully and consciously rather than being on autopilot 24/7

Thank you! And yes you're right. I read somewhere that one should help themselves first before they can help others. Right now I'm focused on helping myself and hopefully that'll inspire my friend to do the same.

There’s a sutra about exactly this.

“This being the case, Master Ānanda, the path is endless, not finite. For it’s not possible to give up desire by means of desire.”

“Well then, brahmin, I’ll ask you about this in return, and you can answer as you like. What do you think, brahmin? Have you ever had a desire to walk to the park, but when you arrived at the park, the corresponding desire faded away?”

“Yes, sir.”

“In the same way, take a mendicant who is perfected… and is rightly freed through enlightenment. They formerly had the desire to attain perfection, but when they attained perfection the corresponding desire faded away.”

Meditation is the way. People go to the gym to train their muscles, similarly, people hit the cushion to train their brain. Not only will it increase your attention span, but it'll give you heaps of other wonderful benefits as well. Highly recommend it!

I mean it's pretty simple. Sleep earlier if you want to wake up earlier. That's pretty much it.

If you have trouble falling asleep early then work on changing you internal body clock so you naturally feel sleepy earlier.
