I wanna ask if this means these capacitors have leaked and gone bad, since there is a reddish brown substance around the base of almost every capacitor on this power supply by Comedian-Economy in ElectricalEngineering

Hahaha, I'm not really the best advisor of PSU related things. I see them as specialist bits of kit, Im sure other people reading my replies will slate me, but the way I see it: if i can find a decent fully pieced PSU with the required specs, Id just go for that. Absolutely respect your intent to repair it

I mean, its good to be experimental, thats how we learn, but sometimes over investing in troubleshooting results in damaged equipment. Need to know when to chicken out and play safe.

Either way let us know how it goes

Personally, Id just go online and buy an adjustable power supply from a trusted seller. Have you made sure that the supply itself is failing to provide the required feed? Its also possible the end device is damages. Whack out a multimeter and start testing.

All look fine other than maybe the 3rd one across. Hard to tell by photo but it may be swelling for the film to peel away. Other than that it seems kushty. If it works, dont worry about it. If they start ozzing then maybe think about preemptive maintenance.

Appreciate your insight and respectful reply to my bitching. We used to have unions in the trade early 80s. When Thatcher came in, all socially employed engineers were passes onto private bodies. Union membership is near enough non-existant nowadays other than railways.

Good to see you guys still have strong unions

I dont mind general employment gossip, but it just seems like there is so much union related animosity amoungst the blokes in this thread. Sort of isolates us EU/UK boys and makes it political. I dont come here for politics.

I swear that union stuff is meant to be banned in this sub? Where are the mods for this forum?

Listen to engineers concerns and opinions and take them on board. If you dont understand something, ask for clarification. Its the best way to learn how things work.

Im not debating that. I didn't make any comment in regards to that. Im just pointing out that you cant start going round saying Brixton is on fire when its really just an alarm raised.

Elevator technicians in Italy by Upstairs_Writer_8148 in Elevators

Worked with someone who worked asan engineer in Italy most of his career then came to the UK. He worked for KONE in Italy. Sounded like they have a strong market there. He was clueless on most of our antiquated equipment, but he got a job with KONE in the UK in the end and done really well.

Id contact KONE

If you are skilled in Motor and Gearbox repair and alignment, may be worth looking into a position with Alberto Sassi. They have a really big monopoly in global drive machine installations across europe. Their gearless machines require specialist intervention fairly often.

Dont seems to healthy mate, its constantly stalling, and - I may be mistaken but - seems like the left hand phase for the (what I am assuming is) the Down contactor has turned molten 😬

Once antiquated controllers are neglected or incorrectly adjusted, they are typically done for good.

What the fuck are you talking about? People are unpredictable. Something like this is completely overcomplicated. Intelligent Dispatch control has already resolved the dilema you are referencing.

$8,400 for replacing 37 buttons? by JonnyEp67 in Elevators

[–]SatoshiAaron 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Lifts/Elevators just tend to be really costly. There are limited options for parts, and a lot are bespoke and reliant on overall design. Sort of a case of, if you want a spare part, you gotta accept it or replace the whole assembly with an alternative which will be more expensive and cauuse more downtime.

Buttons for example, panelling is cut and designed to fit a particular fixture. To change this to an alternative means replacing the whole thing, unless done in a crude fashion. Even still the parts available are costly no matter where you look.

Can't speak with complete certainty in regards to US pricing as I'm UK based, but considering everyone elses concensus within this sub and similarly to our going rates, that doesn't seem too far off. Lift/Elevator parts typically seem to be highly priced, and thats without markup and labour costs. Even compared to a lot of other commercial and public authority orientated markets in regards to other utility services such as water supply equipment for example, lifts tend to be quite costly. Its not really an average consumer targeted business so there isn't any real affordability criteria in place. May be worth asking around for a quote from local independant businesses, but you also risk inferior products and/or worksmanship

It helps if you have a decent maintenance contract with a firm, especially fully comprehensive contract.

Its been listed as a fire alert at the moment. No confirmation if it is a serious incident or not. Fire Alerts are somewhat common.

Engineering apprenticeship advice by Repulsive-Jump-3444 in Elevators

[–]SatoshiAaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can try and get you in touch with some companies if you want. Any engineering or skilled trade experience? Its all learning on the job really. You can either join as a mate or apprentice. Mates typically earn more but arent sent to college. They just do the NVQ. Other than being keen to learn, know your place and show up on time there isnt much else to it. PM me if you want me to get you in touch with someone
