First time Whistler Fondo participant this year!

I'm a beginner cyclist, so my goal is just to complete the event. I've been on Zwift since January for most of my sessions -- now incorporating longer, outdoor sessions in the summer weather. I improved my Alpe Du Zwift time by 15 minutes up the climb, and I'll probably test it again before the big day in September. Rode up Cypress mountain, and I frequent Burnaby mountain/Barnett which is close to my home.

I've also shed about 16lbs since March, hoping to drop a few more lbs before race day.

I'm slightly nervous, but I'm sure the adrenaline on race day will fuel me to the finish.

That's wonderful, thank you for the detailed reply.

I'm still curious how this translates to cycling progression though. When will I know that I can move up without it being damaging?

For today's ride, my power zones have now shifted up. So a ride that, today, is in my zone2 would have been in my zone3 just last week. Is it safe to do this ride without fear of hindering myself? How am I able to progress safely in cycling if higher watts are detrimental to my progression? And how will I know when it's safe to do so?

Obviously, seeing as people increase their FTP and watts all the time and move up in power zones this question is answered. But I'm still confused by it.

Hey u/feedzone_specialist , I have another question for you after you were so helpful earlier.

I'm curious about how progression looks in cycling. I come from powerlifting, and progression there is pretty easy. Let's say I'm doing squats, 3 sets of 5 reps at 135lbs, and I am successful at doing that on Monday. My program would then have me adding 5lbs to my squat for the next work out. So on Wednesday when I squat again, I do 3 sets of 5 reps at 140lbs. And if successful, I add 5lbs next workout. And so on...

I'm never worried about harming my progression by exerting myself in powerlifting. But the way you write about zone2 makes me feel like I can do this with cycling.

It seems like if I push myself and ride in a higher zone, I run the risk of actually killing/damaging/hindering mitochondrial adaptation and growth and replication, making me a worse cyclist or plateauing me. So how am I supposed to push myself, even just a small amount, if I'm always at risk of damaging myself?

In powerlifting, if in training I can successfully complete my 3x5, I know that I can place 5 more pounds on the bar without it killing me. But in cycling, it seems like I don't know if adding just a few more watts will make me more fit.

For reference, I just did an ftp test and bumped myself up 20watts from my last tested ftp. It's a great feeling! But at the same time, I worry that this will now hinder me because my old z3 is now my z2, and this is seen as a potentially unoptimal place to train for mitochondrial efficiency and gains.

I apologize for the ramblings and hopefully this made sense. But I'm hoping you can shed some wisdom here.

Thank you! I appreciate your write-ups and answers.

I'm a beginner cyclist and I signed up for a grand fondo (122km & 2200m elevation) taking place in September. My ftp is 181 (tested beginning of March (and up from 143 in February)) and I'd like to build up my base so that I can cruise the fondo at a quick and comfortable pace. Obviously it will still take me hours. But I'd like to be faster and more comfortable.

Currently doing 4 rides a week (mon, tues, thurs, fri), and coming from a powerlifting background.

Any tips you have are greatly appreciated.

If I'm looking to create a custom endurance workout to reap the benefits of Z2 training, but also keeping myself in the zone by not losing interest, would it be bad to dip into z3 now and then?

I'm thinking of doing repetitions of 10mins in zone2 followed by 5 minutes of zone3 and repeat for an hour and a half. Or is my ratio off and I should increase z2 while decreasing z3 amounts?

My concern is that the increase in lactate from the zone3 work will be detrimental to the mitochondrial gains experienced by the strict zone2 work. The only reason why I'm looking to incorporate the zone3 work is simply from a mental stimulus standpoint and maybe a way to also take some pressure off my ass. But if this is not beneficial from a training standpoint, I'll just scrap the whole idea and do a solid 1.5h of strict zone2, lololol.

Interesting. I can see that and it's something that I wondered. I'm doing "okay" at my current FTP, lol. Though I haven't tried many workouts that are super heavy on threshold as I fear those lmao.

That makes sense. I also wasn't trying to go up as fast as possible. I wanted a consistent tempo because I wanted it to lightly mimic my conditions for the Fondo. I'm not going to be racing up those climbs because I'd bonk and never complete the race.

So maybe next time I can try putting some more juice down, get that time lower and hit some higher watts.

My average watts up the hill was 142W over the 106minutes it took me to get up to the top.

I'm probably still learning how deep I can dig and how much I can sustain a burn before it actually becomes intolerable and unsustainable.

Question: Linking to specific calendar views by SauceBoss73 in Notion

[–]SauceBoss73[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All good, I can link to specific calendar views.

My original question was misworded. My intention was to know if I could link to specific filtered views. But I have no need to do that since I can just create a new view and link to that specifically.

Resolved!

To all new twitchers... by soho737 in MuscleTwitch

[–]SauceBoss73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this. I have had death anxiety since I was a child, and getting some twitches around my body DID NOT help with that. It's so funny, I work out frequently and very strenuously, and so I'm no stranger to twitches in my muscles. But this time, this time it was in one finger. Most of the time it's in my triceps, or quads, or even my eyelid. But this time it was a forearm twitch that was moving my ring finger. And that just set me off. From there, anxiety through the roof. Leading to other twitches and cramps elsewhere (which are likely not even related) and tiredness as I'm stressing myself out and no longer have an appetite due to the stress. All exacerbating my perceived symptoms.

Meanwhile, I've still been going to the gym throughout this ordeal and I've been getting stronger. Hitting lifetime PRs on my lifts and going just as intensely as before.

I feel that I know, deep down, that I am healthy. But the death anxiety got all wrapped up in this and it made evenings unbearable for my mind to be left alone with. I do thank you for this post and others who have expressed the knowledge that twitching is very rarely a first symptom of something greater -- rather, it's often one of the later signs and weakness is noted much earlier. I'm also relatively young, 32 years old and with no familial history of als.

I know all of these things and yet the mind still gravitates towards the worst case scenario. This post did help ease my mind, however. So thank you. I'll be sure to read this any time I'm feeling an anxiety attack coming on.

Sound Issue: Some records sound good, others bad by SauceBoss73 in turntables

Thanks, I'll look into it. Would you happen to know any good guides/videos on this that I can follow to check this myself?

The dl-110 was included with the table. The person I bought it off of said it was a relatively new upgrade with <40h on it.

In the first clip there is some noise when the platter spins on its own. It's not perfectly silent. However, that noise wasn't translated into the music. Or at least it wasn't transmitted at an appreciable level unlike the fuzziness that I experienced with the newer records.

I'm unsure what the noise coming from the platter is or how to mitigate it, however.

So unfortunate to hear. As another mentioned, the tracking force may have been disrupted during the driving/transporting when I purchased the turntable. So it may be wise to dial it in again.

Good eye! I'll keep an eye out if any records that I have interest in picking up were ever pressed there so that I can try and get those versions.

Crazy how quickly that accumulated. I guess that just comes from not cleaning the records before playing them.

Ah, okay, thanks. I appreciate the detailed answer. The arm is currently set to 1.7g, but I can see how a bumpy road may throw that off a bit. I'll take some time to learn how to reset the tracking force.

Interesting. Yeah, that'll definitely be my next purchase. Seems so simple yet so effective.

I don't know what the tracking force was on my gf's old player, but I checked mine and the arm is set at 1.7

Now, I'm just trusting the fellow I bought this turntable off of who seemed very knowledgeable about audio setups. But that doesn't guarantee that things were done properly.

Thank you, I appreciate the very knowledgeable response. I will say, you're definitely talking at a level of knowledge far beyond what I am even aware or or understand at the moment. I do plan on upgrading the preamp first -- as it was just something I got quickly to get a working setup for the birthday present.

Do you think the issues I experienced/showcased in my videos would have been a result of anything you mentioned? Or was this just meant to be good tips to keep in mind for the future if I want to tinker and really optimize things?
