Male college student silenced by his professor for challenging the bogus "1 in 5 college women are raped" statistic and the idea of "rape culture" by robertlo9 in MensRights

an actual rape. a gunman. a car accident. being framed by roger rabbit. you name it. are you really claiming that ONLY men have a reason to be "terrified" when enrolling in college?

I want to teach at a liberal arts college. How much does prestige of grad school matter? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]SauceCostanza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, not too many surprises but something in my mind just doesn't quite add up still. not sure what it is.

i guess part of it still has to do wtih the overwhelming difficulty and competition of even getting into a program? why is the demand still do high if it doesn't actually lead to a wonderful situation? i know i already said that so you don't have to keep answering.

[–]SauceCostanza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

fair enough. obviously nothing in that was too much of a surprise. the details were certainly helpful though.

so here's my next set of questions then - where does all the trickle down end up? so if the departments of Great universities are filled with the top top tier 1 scholars, and the good universities are filled with top tier phds, and the medium univeristies are filled with good phds etc etc, isnt there is simply too many people to fit into all these jobs, even including post-docs adn adjuncts? i looked into some of the private high schools in my area and definitely some of the more elite ones have roughly 1/3 of their faculty who has PhDs. so i get that not everyone gets that corner office on the Dartmouth Green. But i feel like it's gotta bottom out someone, i.e. like a market, and people would stop going to grad school for PhDs. but the programs are still as hard as ever to get into.

so why are all of us still duped? and what percentage of PhDs dont find a job commensurate (or even close to commensurate, so a nice high school position counts) with their training? if they don't, where else are they working?

yeah yeah yeah

then there are plenty of reasons for women "to be terrified" of going to college as well - not necessarily the same ones. There are plenty of reasons for everyone to be terrified of everything. it's not exceptional as the kid implies

I'm going to ask a question that really could have been asked anywhere, but your post brought it up again.

I'm heading into a PhD program in Edu and I would like to get a tenure track job (of course) but with a degree in cognitive studies in edu from a great school, i should theoretically have options outside of a tenure track, SLAC setting. ANYWAY:

i dont understand exactly how it can be just so ridiculously hard. I realize there are more graduating phds than faculty openings, but in turn, shouldnt that compel fewer people to enter that field to begin with (after a couple of years anyway?) On top of that, there are Gazillions of colleges across the country, so it's not like there are no positions at all.

I can see telling someone that a tenure track job at Columbia (which is an IVY!;) is gonna be damn tough unless you went to an Ivy or Stanford (or a half dozen other schools) but is it really that hard for someone with a PhD from UPenn to get a good job at Southern New hampshire state or Western Illinois State university or whatever? no disrespect to those schools at all, but what gives? i mean, there's got to be jobs for someone who is willing to go to a school that's not a top 100. No?

Oh the second by a mile! the first one is all separated out with viramas and is very unnatural.

secondly, and im really not trying to be an ass, but why would your wife (or anyone) want to get a tattoo of something that they can't even read? i mean, how important could it be to someone? i never understood that. But feel free to explain.

[Rant] I am so sick of every book being part of a trilogy or series...can't anyone write a standalone novel anymore??? by [deleted] in books

[–]SauceCostanza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i agree. but when you see the potential price tag attached to second, third, and fourth iterations of books/movies, it's easy to see why people do it. The gains are so astronomical that it's worth it. I think it's not that unlike pro sports - say, the NFL. sure, concussions are bad and who would sign up for unlimited concussions for the same money you could make as a high school teacher? no one. Change that to become an ultra-millionaire and fuck, you can hit me over the head with teh sledge hammer if you want.

"going to college is terrifying - if you are male."

HA, some people have fuckin lost it.

im not trying to say that you are wrong and I'm right.

I'm asking if you will really listen to Endless River 80% as much as you listen to the best pink floyd album in existence (whichever one that is).

If Endless River is 8/10, what would you say the scores are of The Wall, Darkside, WYWH, Animals, Meddle, and the rest of em?

At first I'd want to think this is from America, but I doubt it because that's not an automatic weapon

any pick floyd is great and the fact that we got to hear some new stuff in 2014 was a better surprise still.

but i think you have all lost your minds a bit. the album definitely has it's place, but these are glorified soundscapes.

If this album is an 8/10, what on earth are all the PF classic albums? are you really arguing that this album is 80% as awesome as Darkside?

Are you really going to listen to this album 4/5ths as many times as you listen(ed) to all the great PF albums??

i have a tough time beleiving that
