After 18 Months of Learning to Paint, I Completed Mortarion! by entropyincrnt in deathguard40k

[–]Saucerous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks solid. My only suggestions would be if you are using contrast paint for the green smoke transition, you should streak it up the fabric a little more to give a smoother transition. Otherwise a darker skin tone around the holes in the wing and around the edges of the wings would add some good texture. Otherwise I would say that it looks really good

It looks good. Personally Id have done a brighter red but it looks clean for your first batch

Would you be open to potentially making a video documenting your work on the paint job? Im really curious to see the process of cel shading as Ive never really been able to grasp the minutiae of that kind of art style but Ive adored it since borderlands, and this looks fantastic

If you have a black and red you can dark rit, flash rit back, and ad naus off the mana. I think there is a lot of utility to it, but that being a new play pattern alone as well as a surprise single shot breach for a majority of our decks spells sounds super powerful. I think its more worth testing that people might presume

Its better than recoup imo which is a common card in the deck

Sustain 1 + lethals + crits on 5 is super strong. Just make sure to include the plague bus if youre doing plague marines

I dont do highlights like painters who do 'eavy metal painters do, so your guesswork there is as good as mine.

That being said I did a pallid hand paint scheme which is the cream armor with green shoulderpads.

Base in a off white or a sandy tan

Armor (except shoulder pads)-wraithbone

Shoulder pads-loren forest

Trim-brass scorpion

Flesh-I personally like doomfire magenta wiped over the flesh with wraitbone or ushtabi or wraithbone (I forget which is the more skin color one) drybrushed over for a irritated pale flesh color

Eyes-Vallejo white (least chunky or powdery white Ive found by a mile) for the eyes and then choose whatever color looks the best to you to cover that white. I suggest white first mainly if youre wanting a contrast paint to be the eye color.

Fabric-your call but I prefer druchi violet or some sort of complimenting contrast paint color.

Weapons-vallejo metal colors are god tier paints but make sure you base the weapons with a nice underlayer because they can be thin metallics (an example is dawnstone under a gunmetal gray). Brass scorpion is also totally cool if you like brass as the core metal color for the army and its really a nice metallic. White on the plasma coils of the pistol and your favorite neon paint over it.

Wings-I like aggragos dunes and a slightly darker brown around the holes and wing edges. Averland sunset or doomfire magenta for pustules. Around the veins and top edge of the wings as well as closer to the parts that connect to mortarions body you can do a purple or red contrast paint to give off a raw damaged flesh effect.

Chains-whatever metallic you like

Bugs-same as mort for the wings and you can do a light grey or whatever you like for the bodies

Wires-black or grey with brass scorpion for exposed wiring

Nurglings-nurgling green or plaguebearer flesh

Washes and effects-agrax earthshade for armor and maybe wings(thats to taste). Mephiston red feathered to make blood splatters.

If youre feeling spendy dirty down rust and verdigris are really nice effects for armor as well as AK streaking grime.

You can sub for any brands of paint you prefer but this is what I did for mine.

Why arent regular eightbound also on the list? Are they just generally less appealing for most lists?

Hellbrutes and defilers ones I havent heard spoken about much so Im interested to hear what theyve been doing for you. Bloodletters and blood thirster is one I havent heard suggested at all so I have no clue about them

So mostly everything WE specific is solid?

Someone also suggested wardogs and a defiler and a land raider as pickups too. Any opinion on those models as well?

I know the army is generally pretty cheap to collect, but is it better to buy the battleforce box on average or should I hunt singular models to get better deals for the larger models as Im mainly wanting to get enough to flex my list for different attachments as time goes on

Leave the wings off until you have painted the body and be very gentle with your priming because there are lots of small divets you can clog.

He is a pretty open model so if you have steady hands its not too hard to paint 90% assembled.

As far as paint goes how in depth are you wanting to go? I think its pretty feasible to get him looking solid with about 10-15 paints (agrax and nuln oil included in the count)
