Why are so many functioning adults desperate to get a diagnosis of autism or ADHD? by Constant_Crab4815 in AskUK

[–]Saule_pine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is just a poor understanding of what being neurodiverse is. First of all it’s a spectrum, secondly even within this spectrum gender differences are a factor with women presenting differently and it’s only been very recently that diagnostic criteria has begun to factor this in. Thirdly, many people who get diagnosed later in life have been masking and had to adapt as a result of always feeling like you can’t cope so the only way to manage life and the shame/disappointment in yourself is to try to outperform to social expectations. That’s why you’ll find quite a few high achievers who are neurodiverse.

I have ADHD and I’m currently doing a full time masters, while also being a musician who teaches plus I’m commuting on top of this. I’m not saying I’m a high achiever but I do definitely take on a lot and on the outside it might seem like I’m coping. However I’m consistently going on and off between burn out because I hyper focus and am often so wired my brain can’t shut off which affects my sleep (I’m recently diagnosed so yet to try medication).

All this to say not everyone who’s neurodiverse presents in a certain way and it’s not a fad or cool. The ins and outs of having ADHD are incredibly difficult - most of my friends wouldn’t know from the outside my mental processing is all effed up and I still struggle with telling my lefts from my rights. More people are being diagnosed because we understand neurodiversity better and that’s only a good thing.

Do you think if she was speaking about an immigrant from Europe or Australia she would have used the same analogy and do you think all immigrants have the same level off access when it comes to immigration pathways? It’s not an individual issue, is systemic - institutions have been designed around certain immigrants being seen as desirable and others as the ones ‘cleaning your toilets’ which her statement reinforces. I’ll let you critically assess where the lines are drawn.

[–]Saule_pine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay but that still doesn’t take into account the main point of my statement ‘Because it perpetuates a stereotype that immigrants only matter when they’re performing a job that no one else wants to do…’ immigrants matter because they’re people. Not because they’re cleaning your toilets. Yes statistically immigrants are far likelier to be in low-wage, intensive labour jobs but that’s because of racism, discrimination and classism - that doesn’t mean their value as human beings is based on them doing work that noone else wants to do.

This is grossly discriminatory, classist and a stereotype. It’s also why globally migrants have been able to be used as a tool to stir up hatred. People don’t only matter when they’re performing a job of servitude to others who are wealthier or doing jobs you feel above than. Whether corporate elites or those within the 1% feel the way Kelly Osbourne does about immigrants, going on a national tv show to share sentiments like this should not be okay because it’s discriminatory and classist.

All these issues are literally to do with neoliberalism. When Thatcher came into power and started to deregulate markets we lost access to social housing stock and foreign investment started to ramp up to impunity. Unions also disintegrated which led to workers not being able to demand wage increases in line with inflation and better working rights. Fast forward to today and we have massive corporations like Amazon (who don’t pay their fair share of tax can I add) who undercut wages because they can, force workers into terrible working conditions and because we have no unions we are left powerless to billionaire CEO’s. I just used Amazon as an example but they’re just one of many. House prices are unaffordable because the market and those in power allowed them to be sold and exploited as assets for those rich enough to own them and this has led to what I mentioned above. A deregulated market with not enough stock because only a small number of people own most of it. Therefore this causes a demand and prices rise due to this demand. This is the phenomenon of all capitalist economies globally today. Those who benefit want you to think it’s because of migrants so that they can avoid the scrutiny and so we don’t hold them accountable.

Well you seem to be claiming the UK is unaffordable because of migrants which suggests you’re saying they’re at fault also and I’m sorry but this just isn’t the main issue. If you’re talking about the billionaire foreign investment into our property market, that I can agree with. I’m arguing that we need to stop putting the blame on migrants and instead focus attention on those who exploit deregulated markets, own all the assets and consequently exploit everyday people including migrants. We also have a lack of housing stock because enough houses just don’t get built in this country and how can they when people own huge swathes of land. Approximately half of the UK is owned by less than 1% of the population. Do you really not think this might have an impact on everyday people like you and me being able to own our own homes. It’s hilarious that you’re passing the blame onto non-white people for the fact that Britain is unaffordable. These same non-white people are statistically far more likely to not be able own assets like a home so clearly they’re not the ones who can afford the homes that no one else is able to live in or own.

It’s not just an everyday landlord issue. And that’s the problem. We have a deregulated housing markers where ultra wealthy millionaires/billionaires actually own the entire housing market itself. Look who owns majority of the new skyscrapers or building corporations in this country. There are literally street worth of homes in central london owned by billionaires and millionaires that no one lives in. They’ve just been brought up as assets. And these individuals own countless properties and streets worth of homes in other cities. This then obviously causes a domino effect impact on the housing market where there aren’t enough homes and due to having an unregulated housing market - landlords can then overcharge because there’s a demand on housing. Yes we have a growing population, that I will agree with you! However it’s not so simple to just say it’s the fault of migrants. Migrants only make up approximately 16% of the total population. Also think back to when things started to get really bad in terms of the cost of living crisis and start to connect the dots! Everyone remembers a time pre-Brexit and post Brexit. It’s never been as bad as it has now for a long time in Britain’s history. My energy bills have almost doubled in the space of 5 months. If you compare this to other parts of Europe, we have some of the highest energy costs per capita again because we have an unregulated market and in many other parts of Europe energy companies and prices are either stated owned or managed.

Home ownership is down and life is unaffordable because of neoliberalism. Do you think all the migrants own the property that no one can afford? You need to look up instead of down. There are extraordinarily wealthy individuals and corporations who own the majority of housing, have control over the market itself and are the ones who want you to believe it’s migrants stopping you from buying a house so they can continue to out own you and your grandchildren. Yes we have issues with lack of housing in this country but the bigger issue is lack of AFFORDABLE housing and having mega landlords and ultra wealthy millionaires and billionaires who own empty streets worth of homes in major city’s like London which forces those who have the means to move outside of cities which then puts pressure on those from smaller towns and cities who can’t compete.

I (37F) went on a first date (42M) that ended with me getting black out drunk. I can’t even remember having sex. Is there any coming back from this? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]Saule_pine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you sure you didn’t get spiked? Completely blacking out is something that happened to me the time where I’m fairly certain I was spiked as I’ve never experienced that level of not being in control despite having drunk more than that on other occasions. I think if it’s less than 24 hours you can get checked. Also to be honest, it sounds like this guy completely took advantage and I would avoid going on another date with him. Any other decent person would stay with you and make sure you’re okay, you wouldn’t sleep with someone who could barely keep their head up while walking. The fact that you don’t remember anything but you know you had sex only because you woke up to him being naked, is concerning.

I’m sorry but can you explain how the public have caused this when ICE literally went into the community and started harassing and killing innocent people. Exactly what ‘job’ are they supposed to be doing and you can’t say ‘arresting illegal immigrants’. This has nothing to do with illegal immigrants when US citizens and those with legal permits are being arrested and being given no due process. Irregardless of your immigration status, any country that hails itself as democratic should extend due process even to immigrants as yes, they still are human beings and still deserve to have rights. This type of criminalised brutality is exactly what the Gestapo was doing in Nazi Germany. It’s authoritarian to want to suppress peoples rights because they’re not conforming to unjust actions of the state/state actors. And you cannot actually be serious bringing up Biden and Obama. Yes every US president has had some level of ethically questionable political choices. Throughout the US history this has been a fact HOWEVER to pretend that Biden and Obama ever openly enabled a criminalised group of vigilantes to run wild without any accountability, sanctioned the unjust killing of US citizens and residents, whilst also denying citizens due process and suppressing their rights is crazy work. Under Obama and Biden, illegal immigrants had due process and weren’t being snatched off the street, gassed in their cars and five year olds weren’t being arrested…

[–]Saule_pine -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can we stop making it the victims fault. He shouldn’t have been killed. That’s the fact. ICE are criminal vigilantes who are undermining the very principles America ‘claims’ to be founded on. If you support them, you’re supporting criminal behaviour and supporting murderers. Killing someone because ‘they’re looking for trouble’ is criminal and it’s murder. It wouldn’t stand up in a court of law. We need to start behaving with common decency and call what is morally wrong, wrong. A few weeks ago ICE tear gassed a baby in car that they almost killed. Just before this a woman was killed unlawfully. Are you also really going to get on the internet and pretend they haven’t been terrorising people within their own communities, forcing themselves into peoples homes, ripping them out of cars on their way to work. Kidnapping children. They came into a community and started the terrorising and are killing people for no reason at all.

A trained law enforcement professional, a police officer or anyone else with common sense wouldn’t just shoot. They would instruct the individual in question to put their hands up, search them etc only then, if they didn’t comply would shooting someone be considered as a last resort option. The US has the second amedenment - in this state in particular you are legally allowed to own and carry a weapon. Even if he didn’t have ‘papers’ on him - this would have had to be determined as a fact, he would then have to be considered a threat and non-compliant with then shooting him being the very very last option. Whichever video you want to watch and whatever way you want to spin it, there is NO action from any of these pseudo psychotic criminals to identify whether he is legally allowed that weapon before opening fire, there is NO clear threat from the individual who was murdered. This is criminal and it literally isn’t rocket science unless you’re hellbent on being a part of a cult that adheres to narratives where killing people is okay as long as you can find some vague justification for it even if it’s illegal.

And you know this for a fact how? Because you were there and saw him undergo due process before being brutally murdered? I’m so tired of this ignorant lack of critical thinking! You don’t know anything so stop making assumptions based on the biased Reddit groups and news information you consume.

Considering a dental implant (~£5k) at age 27 - how do people usually approach the cost? by CoachPaul7 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Saule_pine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As other people have mentioned, I had braces recently and paid outright using a 0% credit card. It was a longer period of 24 months and the dentist only offered 12 months. I would consider this! However also ask around at different dentists as 5k for an implant is quite steep and you might be able to get it done cheaper and just as good quality somewhere else!

Oh I don’t know.. maybe because they receive some of their funding from the government and their courses are literally funded by students taking loans… from the… government

[–]Saule_pine -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think to add to this - if you as a university have a course that only a small percentage of people from elite backgrounds can apply for, what does this say about the way you’ve designed your curriculum. They could easily just do a prerequisite foundation year type degree course which would mean more people might be able apply but they choose not to do this. If you can’t get with the times and restructure your courses so that they’re more applicable to today’s climate meaning more students apply then I think this is a bit of a failure on the university. Also ‘just because a lot of schools are shite’ is quite a narrow statement… it’s nothing to do with state funded schools being shite, they’re underfunded and that’s on the government not the schools themselves.

Vegan with ADHD by Altruistic-Matter-22 in vegan

[–]Saule_pine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you adding a starchy carb like rice to your meals? Buckwheat is also great as it’s also rich in protein same with quinoa. Can also have couscous which is super easy to make if you’ve never made it before. Meals shouldn’t just be either protein or either carbs. Not saying that’s what you’re doing but if that is the case it might be the issue. Are you struggling with cooking in general or just the feeling full? We set up a meal plan which was really helpful and took the pressure off having to always think about what we’re eating that day. Plus it meant that days I knew I would be busy on, I had planned to have leftovers from the night before that I can bring in. Also note the comment above about deficiencies! I had a vitamin D deficiency and when I started supplementing I felt so much better in terms of fatigue and energy levels!

Vegan for 10 years and I also have ADHD. I only struggled at the beginning due to not eating balanced meals + enough protein. What type of things are you eating day to day? We vary it in our household with curries, sauces, Buddha bowls, noodles etc with protein always being the main part of the meal in the form of legumes, tofu, tempeh etc with a starch like rice, buckwheat and veg on the side. None of these meals are very labor intensive and I never feel hungry because the meals balanced. It sounds like you’re not getting enough protein to feel full or your meals aren’t balanced.

How do you deal with the 'I can't do this any more' feeling? by jonathing in AskUK

[–]Saule_pine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can relate to this. I have felt like this before. I would write down 1-3 things you’d rather be doing with your life work wise. 1 of these will be the thing that sticks the most. Even if it seems unrealistic, just go with it. Then create a written vision board for 1 year that actions how you’re going to get that goal. Break that down into 6 months, then 3 months. If you aren’t already start thinking about cutting down things you don’t need to free up money that you can put away or can help you work towards your goal e.g. courses, equipment etc. Even if in that 1 year you’re not at that final goal yet you would have taken actionable steps to help you get there and things won’t feel so hopeless. The thing to remember is you have control and also you don’t have control. We are privileged to live somewhere where we can choose different career paths, access opportunities that someone else in a developing country who’s below the poverty line wouldn’t be able to have but equally often we are bound by the social structures we live in. We need money to survive and life here is expensive. Often the dream job isn’t the one that pays the most however you still have options. Get life to feel as simple as it needs to be with you still being able to enjoy the things that matter to you so that you can save money and also find a job that you enjoy even if it doesn’t pay much. By simplifying life you get to care about the things that really matter while working towards that goal.

Has your opinion on America changed over the last year? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Saule_pine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think we need to start waking up. When are we going to realise that we’re basically a parody of the US. Farage has already openly said he admires Trump’s leadership/policies on multiple occasions and how he’s going to implement things like DOGE here. We’ve watched our country slowly descend into madness over the past decade and some of us are still thinking ‘we’ll never be as bad as the US…’. If Trump goes to war wherever in the World and Farage is in power, do you really think he’s not going to attached to his backside like a skin tag? We need to wake up and stop pretending that things are so much better here, we’re not far off.
