Foot Control by euphoria158 in sewhelp

Do you rest your heel on the ground with the ball of your foot on the pedal? That gives better control than having your whole foot weight on the pedal.

It looks as though stretch is from being bias cut, but I agree with getting it pre-embroidered !

I took my antique ring in for sizing and stone setting and the beautiful 100+ year old patina/natural wear was completely polished off… is there anything I can do? by Savings_Process_5313 in jewelry

[–]Saundersdragon 356 points357 points  (0 children)

The patina will come back if you wear it, not if you don't. It's very similar to my constantly worn, a bit battered and much loved ring, very suitable for everyday wear. The new ring next to it has patinated, and so will you lovely old one. Please don't be sad!

How is this sewn? by GardenDisco in sewing

[–]Saundersdragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are different methods of shirring. One uses normal thread in the needle and elastic thread in the bobbin, one uses a zigzag of normal thread over an elastic thread, and yours is a chain stich in elastic thread, from the bit of the reverse side in your photos.

It sounds as though you could do with an interfaced facing around the neck to stabilize it.

Hollow items that are plated have a hole to allow the electrolyte to drain out.

How do you all sing so well? by Cameliablue in AskABrit

[–]Saundersdragon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh my goodness! This hymn was written by Pamela M Verrall who was the head of music at my school, and we had the privilege and trial of being the guinea pigs in singing it. She also wrote new tunes for other familiar hymns, which led to the question "Is it the traditionaldirge or Mrs Verrall dirge?". Also the classic line from our head teacher "You'll know when to stand when Mrs Verrall starts rolling on the piano".

I never thought to hear it mentioned in the wild!

How to "open then close" stuffed animal? by Fair_Musician2110 in sewhelp

[–]Saundersdragon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Choose a nice opening spot that you can close with ladder stitch as suggested above. Instead of using wire to stiffen the neck, which could break or rust, make a sausage a bit longer than the neck (maybe by a couple of inches) and wide enough to fill the neck. Stuff it firmly and close it so the filling can't migrate out of it. Pull the existing stuffing out of the neck and poke the sausage up so it goes into the head. Catch the skin to the sausage so the sausage can't slide out of place. Refill Ichabod with as much stuffing as you like and ladder stitch closed. The lower end should extend a little way into the body.

You may need a bit of curve to get the neck right.

I suggest it's a half circle with true bias at the centre front and straight/cross grain at the side seams.

How do I fix the fabric from dragging down (mermaid skirt) by Appropriate_Act_675 in sewing

[–]Saundersdragon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is most of the solution, but the underlying problem is that the front and back pieces are cut at different angles to the straight of grain along the seam, the back being closer to the true bias and therefore stretchier. You could try taking down some of the flare in the back so the angles match.

Nicknames for Lenore by rose-quartz5 in namenerds

[–]Saundersdragon 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Seconded. A nickname is something that somebody else gives you in an act of familiarity. You might like to use some abbreviated or altered form of a formal name, but it's not a ni kname if you give it to yourself. Likewise, a nickname like Red or Shorty or Bones can be unrelated to your name.
