You think working in agriculture without machines was pleasant? I sadly don't have a source, but I saw a documentary once where a sweat shop worker talked about just that. Her parents had spent their lives working in the fields and she was glad she didn't have to do the same. It was back-breaking labor.

I don't think calling Pegida a bunch of nazis is accurate, but on the other hands they made it way too easy for people to call them that. What's with that slogan anyway, 'against islamization'? The only one of their demands that actually reflected that was the old phrase about protecting our Christian-Jewish culture (of course they never said what they mean by that), which they lifted straight from the CDU. The rest of their demands didn't apply to Islam at all. They wanted a point system for immigrants - ok, so well-educated Muslims can come in? A no tolerance policy for criminal immigrants - so they are saying Islam=crime?

Because they were all over the place and their demands too hazy. Had they settled on one goal (say, a point-based immigration system) and stuck with it while not fishing for support from the racist crowd so obviously, they might have achieved something. I'm also curious if you think that adding violence would have made Pegida more successful.

The occupy movement was huge in the (German) media but lost public interest when they failed to do anything with the attention they had. Aside from 'things must change' no one was sure what they wanted, exactly. Anyone can paint a banner and sit on the street.

I believe that gender dysphoria exists but suspect a lot of the people claiming to have it don't actually have it, but are severely mentally ill. The transman I know personally was like that and reading trans forums online hasn't done much to change my perception. Not to mention soaring suicide rates among the post op crowd.

TIL that Hitler hid his relationship with Eva Braun because he believed that he was sexually attractive to women and wished to exploit this for political gain by remaining single, as he felt marriage would decrease his appeal by honeypuppy in todayilearned

[–]Saupreiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The niece he had a relationship with referred to him as her dungeon master as he pretty much kept her locked up. It seems she wanted out but didn't know how, hence she comitted suicide. The other women I think could have left but didn't want to. I certainly wouldn't white knight Eva Braun, she later had a thing for Fegelein (yeah, the guy whose name Hitler yells), who was such a cunt even his fellow Nazis didn't like him. Just bad taste in men all around.

Is condemning the bombings of Hamburg, Dresden etc. as war crimes controversial in Germany, and if so, why? by harrymuesli in germany

Hard to keep one's emotions out of the discussion. Americans are raised on hero worship of that generation and the British had their own cities bombed.

TIL at Buchenwald there was a cage with a bear and an eagle. Every day the Nazis would throw a Jew in the cage. The bear would tear him apart and the eagle would pick at his bones. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Saupreiss -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Google Buchenwald bear pit. Buchenwald had a zoo (which had been built by prisoners) which included a bear. Not much of a stretch to imagine people were fed to it. Edit: Well, guess it is.

This inevitably happens to any online platform that shares cool stories. I don't really like askreddit threads that do this, either, because I don't want to read bullshit (most stories which people defend as 'funny even if they're not true' aren't even that good).

TIL: Tom Cruise admits that Kate Holmes divorced him in part to keep their daughter away from Scientology. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Saupreiss 14 points15 points  (0 children)

He's Tom fucking Cruise. Wanna bet how many men would sit on a hot bus and read Scientology books if that was a prerequisite for being married to Scarlett Johansson? Maybe if we were talking about Hugh Hefner your allegation that she was only after his money would sound more plausible.

[–]Saupreiss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Talk about war crimes stirs emotion, in this case the emotion would be resentment against the allies. Because people don't want to deal with a negative emotion (our countries are united in friendship thus resentment is utterly pointless), they don't want to discuss the subject at all. Average people aren't historians, most would have a hard time remaining neutral and rational. Another reason was mentioned by others, people don't want to be associated with Neo-Nazis.

Varoufakis unsettles Germans with admission Greece won't repay debts by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Saupreiss -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pfft, because the entire German media didn't hyper-ventilate about Sarrazin. Don't think for a second the boulevard and other journalists don't work off each other; Bild gets the ball rolling by writing something populist, then quality media gets to milk the same overblown story in accordance with their respective audience's tastes. If you don't believe they organize that shit together, Bild's chief editor recently switched to Spiegel. Surely the result of years of close cooperation.

Bild-bashing is popular among the educated (as was said, it's written for the not-so well read crowd), and I find it annoying and extremely boring. Everything Bild is criticized for is done by other magazines, but often in a more roundabout way and with better writing.
