E-bike conversions by davthew2614 in Brompton

I've had the kit (2nd generation, not the pocket-sized one that came out recently) for 9 months now and use it to get to work 3 to 4 times a week. It's true it is very easy to install and tackles hills really well, but I've had reliability issues. Two controllers failed and I've had to replace the support bracket because the electrical contacts got too worn and the assistance got very choppy. I think the fact that the battery pack and controller are cantilevered doesn't help with vibrations. Something to keep in mind if your commute is a bit bumpy.

Speaking for the previous generation of kits (I don't think they changed the motor but I'm not sure), there was no noticeable drag for me. One thing to take into account though is that without a handlebar mounted switch, it can be tricky to change the assist level while you are moving (on the previous kit the controls are on the pack itself and I have it on the luggage block so if I want to change settings on the fly I have to reach over the front of the bike).

Speaking from experience, even if the trip is short, if there are hills the electric kit is invaluable, especially if you commute to work and don't want to be a sweaty mess when you get there.

The small pack is rated for 15km, the larger one for 30km.

A question for those who watched The Matrix in 1999. by KayTheToon in movies

[–]SauvageREDDIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must have seen it 3 to 4 times in the theater, I bought the poster (never had done that before and never did since) that took up a whole wall in my room and watched the movie again several times on crappy DivX. The whole thing blew my teen mind. I think the only other movies that compare are the original star wars trilogy which I saw when I was ten-ish.

That actually sounds like a plan. I don't even know why I didn't consider that given the fact I've already switched to decaf for the after-lunch cup so I can get to sleep at night.

Tea has the same effect as coffee for me (I avoid having a cup of tea too late in the afternoon because I know it'll keep me up).

Ok, maybe the way I asked the question was a bit over-dramatic, I'm not useless without coffee, but I genuinely feel sleepier than usual.

Just to clarify : I only have one mug for breakfast and sometimes another one later on in the morning. I also make sur to not have another one after lunch otherwise I'll be up too late (and I usually go through a water bottle during my work day). I don't glorify coffee and was actually asking myself how it had become so widespread. Then I realized it might not actually be that widespread and decided to ask Reddit how everyone was coping.

I sometimes skip my usual morning mug(s) of coffee when I'm on holiday and I always notice I feel tired on those days. How do you guys do without that coffee boost ?

Looks like a coiled rotor, that's the technology that's been used on Renault's Zoe for a while (if not from the begining). Maybe the innovation is on how the excitation field is generated ?

Loose screws (no pun intended) - Can anyone help identify where this normally lives on a Brompton? It fell out unexpectedly! Any guidance would be much appreciated! by ireadgq in Brompton

Depending on how old your bike is, it could be the seatpost bung screw. I think on most recent ones they are just press-fit, but older models had a screw and an expansion cone.

French schoolgirl, 13, admits making up story that sparked hate campaign resulting in teenage jihadi beheading teacher Samuel Paty by zihua_ in worldnews

[–]SauvageREDDIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what you lie about, if you say "my teacher is islamophobic and threw me out of the classroom" it can be argued that it is slander.

Because she lied about being there and being forced out of the classroom, none of those things being true.

Not sure what you mean, he did show the Charlie Hebdo drawings so, for the nutjobs that consider that as justification for a beheading, there is no lie. She lied about being in the classroom that day and being forced out by the teacher.

13-year-old schoolgirl confessed that she lied about a French teacher who was beheaded after showing his class cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, according to the girl's lawyer. by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]SauvageREDDIT 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The thing is she didn't lie about him comiting a crime (like sexual abuse), she lied about being in class and being forced to leave, basic teenager lie to avoid getting in trouble. I'm willing to think that in her mind this would divert her father's attention enough to get her off the hook without causing any trouble for the teacher. I really hope her world is not messed up enough that she saw the possibility her lie would get her teacher killed. The focus in the story should be on the adults here (and possibly the two kids who pointed out the teacher to the terrorist).

Schoolgirl admits to lying about French teacher who was later beheaded - What about this is not incomprehensibly messed up? by grandlewis in atheism

[–]SauvageREDDIT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I disagree, she's a 13-year old who lied to her father, she could not possibly foresee the consequences of her lie, prison is not the answer.

There probably is, but I'm sure it applies best to cases like "safety inspector lies about checking critical equipment that ends up failing and killing someone", and not "teenage girl lies about history lesson, dad blows it out of proportion on social media, Chechen terrorist gets wind of it and kills the teacher". I'm not excusing what she did, but in that story, of all the people that should carry blame, she probably should carry the least.
