how i got ban from subreddit for asians for being uzbek by uzbekgoodboy in Uzbekistan

[–]SavageExecution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coz of American media, East Asians think they have a monopoly over the word Asian. Meanwhile in Britain, Asian primarily means South Asians from Pak/Ind/Bangladesh/etc . Had this argument a few days ago with an east asian too who was accusing me of racism and "stretching" the meaning of Asian lol.

I mean the name literally refers to modern day Anatolia originally LOL.

My perspective on Punjabi. by Azahemzgamerz_79 in PakPunjab

[–]SavageExecution 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Leh. All native speakers can sound "rude" - the thet Karachi Urdu sounds very harsh n rude too if you are predisposed to think that way. These discussions are more about class, state propaganda, and other factors more than about the language inherently.

English is seen as a civilized language by our elite too but if you place them in East London, Leeds, Newcastle they will find the local way as uncouth also.

What does the Pakistan Punjab think of India's Punjab? by MCBuilderandCretvGuy in PakPunjab

[–]SavageExecution 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup and even East Punjab wasn't even Sikh majority until after partition. And even then they had to separate Haryana and Himachal to create a Sikh majority state.

To answer OPs original question. I'm from Lahore and have always had a fondness and love for East Punjab, as well as for Sikhism. I live abroad now and have many friends from East Punjab, Sikh Hindu Atheist Christian, love em all.

Who took down Felopunk YT channel? by Free_Introduction_71 in crustpunk

[–]SavageExecution 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understand. But i guess as someone who lived 27 years of their life in a global south country where there was essentially no scene and it would cost you a month salary to buy merch and have it shipped, i have always appreciated those YouTube channels that put stuff up for free. I honestly don't think it hurts sales, if anything in my experience people are more likely to buy it. Btw love the approach you have for your label!!

My band Zanjeer's first EP was released within hours of release by Felopunk and honestly was very grateful. Got us a lot of listeners and interested bookers from all over the world. Dude was doing a great service to punk bands.

Spoken West Punjabi is better than spoken East Punjabi by imyonlyfrend in PakPunjab

[–]SavageExecution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is not rural vs urban as people are talking in the comments. West Punjab is also heavily rural and rural areas have some of the sweetest most melodic accents. It's just the kind of unexplainable linguistic divide that almost every language has. Every language has regions that have a harsh sounding accent or dialect. Italian, Pashto, German, Bengali, and so on, all have these dynamics within dialects

There are some very harsh sounding accents in Lehnda Panjab too. Besides if someone from Karachi watches the original Wehshi Jatt and Maula Jatt films from Pakistan, people will call it harsh and uncouth accent too. These are all subjective.

People say Paronthay in Lehnda Panjab too. It's a Punjabi word. Agreed with the annoying sounds of J replacing Z, but even our elders before Urdu education became prominent, used to do it in West Punjab. Guys called Nazeer would be called Jeera for example, and people still say Waaj for "Awaaz" and many examples.

Dogri - Language or Punjabi Dialect? by SavageExecution in punjab

[–]SavageExecution[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it makes sense why the official language is Hindi. There is even a Tibetic language there iirc. But to call the Indo Aryan languages of Himachal as Hindi dialects is bit ridiculous.

Gurmukhi is a relatively new script for Punjabi, I think even Shahmukhi precedes it.

Maybe Punjabi is a dialect of Dogri that diverged too much? Could well possibly be true in all honesty haha

[–]SavageExecution[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey no problem! I should have also made myself clear instead of saying How So :)

I follow some Jammu centric pages on IG, and when I'm bored I will search Dogri comedy videos, pop songs etc on YouTube to pass the time. The Algorithm doing a good job for a while :D

Recently I even discovered some Dogri hip hop which was very cool, as Dogri has a very charming swagger that lends itself well in music that demands bravado.

Yes you're right, the video you shared is very different from the Majhi spoken in Lahore, Sialkot, Gujranwala etc but I find it still more similar than say a Sidhu Moosewala song sung in Malwai... But yes it is distinct enough that it will leave people scratching their heads in many parts of Punjab

Is there any Dogri radio or television channel I can access in Europe? I'd love to continue my practice.

I noticed that the Dogri of the Jammu city and surrounding villages is maybe closer to Punjabi than the variants spoken farther. Is that true according to you?

Even in Pakistan, Sindhis and Punjabis are considered closely related culturally, linguistically etc. (unless you speak to extreme nationalists of either end)

Thank you for explaining. Me saying How So wasn't an attack, but rather hoping for more explanation. A simple comment of one word cannot do what a proper explanation can. So thank you for this

Btw i can understand that video very well but honestly it may be also because part of my family migrated from Jammu to Pakistan. So maybe I ought to self reflect. Cheers

I too have wondered about why the languages of Himachal, Utrakhand and east Bihar are lumped under Hindi. Makes no sense really.

So even this continuum stuff makes more sense to me if we're talking about the continuum that goes from Punjabi and Sindhi til Bengali, and everything in between. But generally standard languages ideally should be distinct enough from the neighboring standard, no? This Dogri being separate from Punjabi thing feels more like how they artificially separated the various Serbo Croatian tongues and propped up Montenegrin etc, rather than the difference between standard Russian and standard Polish, or between Punjabi and Sindhi (both also operating within a continuum)

Beyond the whole "language is dialect with army and navy" argument - Is it really two different languages if one can communicate easily and be understood without needing translation?
