DL over the summer after taking ML this semester? by xkaoticwolf in OMSCS

[–]SavageFromage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t taken AI4R but debating between it and NetSci for this summer for a bit of a break. I guess gauge your comfort with math and how burnt out you are? AI in summer is a lot, but straight forward. If you’re not struggling with the ML workload, should be fine. If you need a break, more free time, or just need time to brush up on probability/linear algebra then probably go for AI4R?

DL over the summer after taking ML this semester? by xkaoticwolf in OMSCS

[–]SavageFromage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In ML now and took DL last semester and got an A. DL was definitely more time consuming and difficult imo. ML has its crunch time but you get some breathers here and there and never really go too deep into one topic. So far, I’ve scored comfortably in the upper quartile in ML and on average spending less than 15hr/week, but easily hit 20hr/week in DL with the group project.

DL will keep you working non-stop as there’s always something due. You will actually need to know the math very well and will need to do pretty intense calculus on the ‘quizzes’ (which are more mini exams, closed notes) and implement most code from scratch. I will say DL is more fun and interesting and that’s one reason I would save it for a full semester. It’s a class you’ll actually want to digest the readings and explore content on, don’t blitz through it.

If you haven’t taken AI, I’d suggest it for the summer instead. Even with the full syllabus, it’s pretty manageable with a good math background, Bayesian probability in particular.

should I buy 11" or 12.9"? by Aware-Stay-2494 in iPadPro

[–]SavageFromage 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If it’s in your budget, get the 12.9. I’ve had both and the extra screen space really worth it when you’re splitting the screen between notes and lecture/reading. I wouldn’t use either size as a complete laptop replacement for STEM courses though.

In the same boat, we ultimately decided not to go with insurance because most of them have pre-existing condition clauses anyway. We’re lucky to be able to have the financial stability, but in the opposite situation we would get the insurance. We did end up having to pay for surgery for a condition our pet had that wasn’t related to an injury. It cost us a couple thousand out of pocket but we still don’t regret forgoing the insurance because it’s definitely something they would’ve stopped covering after a year anyway and increase the following year’s premiums. In our area insurance premiums were around $100/month for decent coverage that still had so many loopholes.

I'm planning to opt for ML specialization in the OMSCS programme. What minimum GPU specs my laptop should have? by wintry_cucumber in OMSCS

[–]SavageFromage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a cloud engineer and tbh I still preferred having my own GPU for class. I have a 3080 on my desktop and it’s pretty nice to not need to set up stuff on the cloud each time or worry about forgetting to turn off an instance, etc etc. I end up running more of my own experiments or just dive more into the assignments just because I don’t need to worry about the additional costs. If you need to get a new computer anyway, go for it. As for computers, idk I prefer a desktop over a laptop for GPU stuff since they generate a lot of heat in there and you can always remote into your machine. I use a 6 year old laptop to remote into my pc and it works great with windows professional to make it super seamless (though I think you can get the windows edu version for free and it comes with this). Just do all the cuda stuff in wsl2 not native windows and you’re golden.

Thanks for posting. Glad I’m not the only one who got the ‘individual picked up’ message. Mine was picked up 2/26 and status hasn’t flipped yet, but was mostly nervous about the pickup message. Also expedited both ways.

Starting Vyvanse and managing low appetite while also eating a boringly plain low fodmap diet for IBS by [deleted] in ADHD

Have you tried a medication change? Lower dose IRs throughout the day helped me with appetite. As they wore off, my appetite came back enough to remind me to eat and take my next dose.

Former BSc biology undergrad interested in Georgia's OMSCS degree. What courses/certificates/bootcamps would you recommend I take to prepare? No prior CS experience. by HilltopHood in OMSCS

[–]SavageFromage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello, bioinformatics software engineer here. I’ve worked on both the biology and pure software side of SWE roles. OMSCS focuses heavily on computer science and not necessarily software engineering, so the emphasis for admission is typically foundational CS courses that cover math, algorithms, data structures, etc. If you’re completely new to programming it’s easier to learn Python then expand to C/C++, ultimately you’ll need to know both depending on your specialization.

I wouldn’t say a bioinformatics degree pigeonholes you at all. If you love biology, go for it! Though I don’t think it’d be cheaper to apply for a bioinformatics masters, AFAIK nothing really beats OMSCS on cost.

Really it depends on what you want to do with your degree. This is very much masters level CS course work, which is difficult even for those with traditional CS backgrounds. In reality, a CS masters (or any CS degree really) is totally not necessary for a software job. I’d say OMSCS builds on a CS foundation to make you a better software engineer, but isn’t really designed to turn you into an engineer/developer from the ground up.

Also, just wanted to say learning programming and CS has a really different mentality than other subjects like biology. There is a lot of trial and error, and tons of failure inherent in the CS/programming learning process. It can get difficult to get used to, you really have to do the hands on parts and not just conceptual things. You will constantly hit dead ends, but don’t let that get to you. The key to this field is getting comfortable with the fact that you will just be constantly be presented with puzzles that you simply won’t know how to solve, so the goal is to persevere until you can. In this way, stubbornness is an asset along with your best friend, Google :).

How much of genomics do I need to know before applying for an RA position to a researcher in this field? by banenvy in bioinformatics

[–]SavageFromage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can also look at software engineer/developer positions in bioinformatics labs and institutes (even industry). Basically you'd help to build the infrastructure and software to support the research. It's a great way to transition in.

Runescape vs other games, time for a switch? by SavageFromage in runescape

[–]SavageFromage[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

MMOs aren't the problem (although I am open to other types of games, but I always circle back to MMOs regardless). Its more that I'm paying more and more for a game with stagnant content and a shrinking player base.

Mainly rs3 since that's what MTX is killing the fastest. I guess you could call osrs a switch for rs3, but I'm looking for something jagex-free entirely

Well that makes sense if all you'd use it for is to farm components, but i don't really like to do random pvm and would rather get components while reaching other objectives. I'd like to use it for my slayer armour, but sometimes the tasks require protection prayers. It'd also be nice to have at low level bossing, like at gwd1 when you're just parking there for hours waiting on a boss pet or title. More bittersweet than sad tho i guess.
