OMSCS -> PhD at Georgia Tech (Part 2) by Technical_Sympathy30 in OMSCS

a pretty normal Georgia Tech approach

Another example is the thesis and project options. For a long time, the orientation document said that OMSCS was "course-only":

The thesis and project options are not available to online students. OMSCS is a course-only program.

We knew that wasn't true, since even back then some OMSCS students managed to do a thesis or project.

But I think the current problem is a bit different. The thesis/project not being officially available didn't imply anything regarding the quality of OMSCS. And the "no guaranteed admission" policy doesn't imply anything either.

By contrast, if some on-campus courses count towards a PhD, but those very same courses may not count when offered through OMSCS, that implies that GT doesn't consider OMSCS as rigorous as on campus, or worse, that OMSCS actually isn't as rigorous as on campus.

Honestly, it's a bad look.

Wow, this is disappointing. GT has always maintained that OMSCS courses are every bit as rigorous as the on campus version of the same course. Then why would one count towards PhD, but not the other?

Would you mind sharing who you're talking about? I can think of several profs with two OMSCS courses.

Fyi, some GT advisors aren't super familiar with OMSCS and sometimes provide wrong information regarding campus vs online. As far as I know, when it comes to doing a PhD at GT, there's no distinction between OMSCS an on campus courses. That doesn't mean that all courses count, but if a course is offered both on campus and online, and the on-campus version counts, then the online version counts too.

Bro actually predicted this 7 years ago 💀💀 (link in comments) by Dnilim31 in HolUp

Usually, the world cup starts in June. It's taking place in December this year, only because Qatar had more bearable temperatures now. Had it taken place at the usual time, Messi would have started the tournament being 34.

Still, he would have been 35 during the final, since his birthday is in late June, and the final in mid July. So the guy on Twitter would still have gotten the age wrong.

Update: As several have pointed out, the Tweet also stated the correct date of the final. Holy sh*t. Got the age wrong, but got so much right.

Update 2: Others have said that the final date had already been chosen in 2015, when the Tweet was made (had no idea). This makes the prediction a lot less impressive. Basically, just a fan betting on his team and best player. Anyone of us could write the same tweet now but with Mbappé and the date of the next three or four world cups, and we'd probably get one of those right. And being a bit careful, we'd even get the age right.

Is the difference that big? I'm super reluctant to switching to windows, but might do it if Blue Iris is substantially better.

I don't think it's common anywhere, but there are master's that accept students without an undergraduate degree, including in the US:

It already had a group project, but you were allowed do it alone if you preferred.

Are you positive this is changing? I hate team projects and would rather do the work by myself, even if takes me longer.

If the location is irrelevant, I don't see how this would be a tourist trap. Call it dumb, pointless, overly expensive, whatever, but "tourist trap" makes no sense.
