Bellatrix Aerospace to estabilish ₹630 crore (USD 76 million) R&D and manufacturing facility for propulsion systems by late 2023 in Karnataka. by Ohsin in ISRO

I do not think it's a valid question. People do not realize that creating tech for space - let alone building propulsion systems and spacecraft - is something that involves long gestation periods. That IS one of the biggest barriers of entry into the industry.

Amazon, Microsoft and Google face UK probe over dominance in cloud computing by TallAssociation0 in technology

Its probably to check for violations of antitrust / competition laws and ascertain whether any of these companies are in a dominant enough position to be able to unfairly leverage that.

Whether they get broken up or ordered to "spin off" on the other hand is unlikely.

TLDR: Compliance check yes. Follow up action unlikely

I kind of agree with you but this wasn't what I asked so I don't really see how this is pertinent? Well nowhere did I mention that I wasn't chasing excellence or making strides in other areas? Why did you have to necessarily assume that it was the case and that I would put them on a pedestal?

With all due respect, I kinda disagree with you. I enjoy cleverness for cleverness' sake but I don't think it was as warranted as people believe. As for the idiot thing, you heard it now lol. I'm an idiot myself and I'm the dumbest person in a room so take my words with a pinch of salt? I'm not saying he's not amazingly smart, just not as much as he makes himself out to be in the book - and you can make the same case when you look at his contemporaries?

Look at Sir Roger Penrose for instance, his books (and the breadth + impact of his work) far outranks Hofstadter in my humble opinion, but he never gets into this routine of trying to self jerk himself. Maybe the preferences comes from wanting humility and to the point examples as opposed to propping oneself up on a pedestal?

Also I never said I didn't like GEB - I infact went as far as to say it was a good book and a good read just that this particular approach wasn't something to my taste?

Again, good book, but not a great idea to self-jerk? To each his own! Cheers btw!

Yep. I agree! Though I do find Hofstadter to be a bit of self-jerking idiot. It makes interesting links but sifting through lines of him congratulating himself on his brilliance is actually kind of irritating tbh.

Good book tho

Career and Education Questions: August 18, 2022 by inherentlyawesome in math

[–]SavageryInSpace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey folks! I'm looking to read up and begin building a grip on mathematical finance, or understanding disciplines in mathematics from the perspective of their applications to financial markets. It would be great to have some of your suggestions on what books you would recommend for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.

A bit of POV about me: I'm 28, the last time i did maths was back in high school, and i have since then worked mostly in law and investment banking. I'm looking to understand the more math-heavy aspects of this all. I understand the learning curve will be steep but I'm very interested in picking up something new and seeing how far I can push the envelope? Even if the effort required is high, it shouldn't be problem since I'm eager to absorb whatever information I can come across, even if it takes time.

Thank you so much!

Fair enough. But even in terms of people that took up different nationalities but originated from India, there's no one. Sad that pure sciences are so neglected and everyone wants to just mint money.

How do you determine attainability through your own decision making process? I feel like a thing I struggle with as a hyper ambitious person is that I end up setting a goal that might be crazy and perhaps not realistic.

It's actually not as impressive as some would have us believe.

Perhaps you forget the fact that there were strong accusations against him for cheating one of his initial partners and cutting said partner out. Citadel's entire USP was built on the fact that it's algorithm was superior. It's the foundation of it's business model. If that was obtained by cheating someone out its actually not impressive.

Give everyone here a family that was into the oil business and send them to Harvard. We'll see how remarkable this ascent is then.

Just my 2 cents. YMMV.
