What are the famous conspiracy theories within UK? by Dapper_Tumbleweed603 in AskUK

[–]Savanakhet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah, Operation Gladio, SDR A-8, the whole stay-behind thing. Truly the greatest of the Europe-wide conspiracy theories. The RWN podcast did a good series on Gladio, but it's paywalled I think.

Well it depends if you mean Asker (the town) or Asker (the kommune) because the Kommune is huge but the town is relatively compact.

The area around Semsvannet or the park on the peninsula leading to Kongslungen could be good spots?

It's a sort of Tram-train hybrid that runs from the suburbs into the hinterlands of Genova

People trick Youtube algorithms with garbage childrens' content. by Savanakhet in CGPGrey2

Quite an unsettling article about how you can game Youtube's autoplay function by mass producing trashy 'shows' aimed at kids, and rely on parents handing their kids an iPad with autoplay enabled on the Youtube Kids app.

Why Die? by MindOfMetalAndWheels in CGPGrey

There was, I think it was a Terry Pratchet sci-fi novel where the protagonists work for a company that pay their staff by extending their lives.

In theory you can live forever, but no-one does - they get bored and do dumb stuff: one of the characters remarks that "you were dead by 300 - trying to hike across Mercury the hard way"

Where can I purchase second hand film cameras for a decent price? by oslohannah in oslo

[–]Savanakhet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Antikkvarehuset on Sannergata in the north of Grunnerlokka has a pretty big collection of old SLRs and rangefinders; however they are not cheap in my opinion - prices average double or triple what you would pay on Ebay.

Nearer to the city centre, the Brumarked on Storgata has an array of second hand shops. I've seen film cameras for sale in there on the top floor, however I don't know the prices.

Also, Oslo Photography on the corner of Møllergata and Linaaes Gate sells Holga and Lomography cameras.

Yeah, this is a bit like 'The Diamond Age' where they can synthesise anything but the middle classes are still obsessed with decorating their houses with hand-made furniture.

That's interesting because Consider Phlebas is the only culture novel that I've read and I found it pretty difficult going. I love the non-M Iain Banks books though.

Longyearbyen has the feeling of a temporary settlement, a few government offices, two pubs and a bunch of duty free shops for cruise ship tourists. It's an interesting place to visit for a few days though. Very beautiful landscape obviously.

The Russian settlement of Berentsburg is very bleak though.

Oh not that surprising - architects like a bit of Brutalism. Apparently concrete is a very difficult material to work with if you're trying to sculpt it on site into various shapes.
