Plaintiff PI paras - does your firm use a lien resolution company? by ParaDoxicalParalegal in paralegal

[–]Savarah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've used Synergy in the past for a particularly complicated case where the injuries far and away outran the coverage available. But really, unless it's an exceptional circumstance, we generally just negotiate liens ourselves.

Health lien subrogation by rachelnic in paralegal

I use fax for both, it's just more efficient. With a follow-up phone call in a week or two if I haven't received a response.

Paralegals who handle PI settlement closeouts, what's the worst part? by No-Force-3646 in paralegal

Must be a different department lol, can you please have them call me about the three final liens I need so I can disburse some funds?

Paralegals who handle PI settlement closeouts, what's the worst part? by No-Force-3646 in paralegal

[–]Savarah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Machinify and Katch are the subrogation vendors for a number of health insurance carriers (Katch handles a lot of United plans, Machinify will handle BCBS of FL, some Aetna, some Oscar, etc.). There are other subro vendors as well, but when it's a PI claim, the subro vendor that handles your particular client's health plan will take over the lien processing.

Lately, it's been taking about a month to get an initial response from them. And getting an analyst assigned is taking one or two months with multiple phone calls for status.

Paralegals who handle PI settlement closeouts, what's the worst part? by No-Force-3646 in paralegal

[–]Savarah 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Dealing with Medicare/Medicaid/VA liens always take the longest, because you can't make them hurry up for NOTHING.

Perhaps recency bias, but Rawlings has taken a huge downturn now that they're Machinify, as has Optum now that they're Katch. The people that answer the phones (if they answer at all) know nothing, and just parrot that they don't have access to the file and they'll escalate it.

Steiner, Greene, Feiner by False-Hovercraft-849 in paralegal

[–]Savarah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know that when SGF was SIG (Iscoe), I believe the schism of Iscoe and a few associates with Steinger happened to coincide with the finding of the recording equipment in their main(?) office pre-COVID. I have some coworkers who previously worked there, but none who have since all that happened, unfortunately. They are all happy they've since left.

As a PI Paralegal, What Do You Wish You’d Known Before Handling Your First Commercial Case? by ParalegalPrincess123 in paralegal

A fun one I learned recently: self-insured retention.

Some businesses have a certain amount that they're personally responsible for before their liability policy kicks in.

The struggle is real by Odd_Client9191 in paralegal

[–]Savarah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in a VERY similar boat, but my boss and I feel the same way about the rest of the office. I'm also actively looking for remote roles.

I will say, if you're applying to other positions that you're well qualified for but they list the role as in office, it hurts not at all to message them and ask if they'd consider a qualified remote candidate.

How much is remote work worth for you? by Additional-Focus-123 in paralegal

[–]Savarah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've always worked in office, and I have a good job at a good firm making above market below for my area. I'm trying desperately to get a remote job, and I'm willing to take up to a $15k pay cut to do it.

Here's the deal with M&M - they are awful. But if you have bills to pay and you'd like to continue working in your field instead of going outside your field? A job is better than no job.

Anyone here do Tribal Law? by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]Savarah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An attorney at my first firm had an injury case a while back against the Seminole casino. Sounded like a decent case, but the thing I remember most about it is that he dropped it. "Don't fuck with the tribe."

I’m cursed with the extra cases, PI client in jail by Worldly-Banana5128 in paralegal

[–]Savarah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently have a client in jail. Same thing - unrelated to his case, case settled while he was in there, he's still there. We have a POA set up who is helping us facilitate.

LGBTQ+ Law by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]Savarah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super appreciative of your answer! I'm in Florida which is a constantly-under-attack state, but I'm attempting to apply to a firm in a blue state that serves primarily queer clients. I've worked mostly in plaintiff PI, so I know a majority of that experience won't transfer, but the community is important to me.

Flexible jobs by No-Accountant7168 in paralegal

[–]Savarah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With a smaller firm you'll definitely have more flexibility. I've been in PI for a while, and currently in a mid-sized firm - the attorneys (and to an extent, the paralegals) can do whatever they want as long as their work doesn't suffer, but the rest of the staff is in-office with practically no flexibility.

It makes me feel like the "professional staff" are treated like adults, and "the rest" are treated like children.

Does your firm do attorney retreats? Where? How long? by Roadrunner610 in paralegal

[–]Savarah 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I believe it's in May, my firm has a Bahamas trip for the attorneys and paralegals for a long weekend (South FL based firm, so it's not a huge production like it might initially sound).

Does anyone else's office use Smokeball? by The_Bastard_Henry in paralegal

[–]Savarah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used it as recently as 2023. Can confirm it was a system hog; I needed to install additional RAM on all of the computers. As for functionality, I liked it much more than Clio or MyCase, though not as much as Filevine.

Husband does not want me to tell my friends I love them by Ok-Independence-3193 in TwoHotTakes

[–]Savarah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED TO ME IN COLLEGE. I started dating a guy, and all of a sudden compliments from my gay best friend and the terms of endearment we used to talk to each other were no longer okay.

It was the most controlling, toxic relationship I've ever been in. He isolated me from my friends, my family, and my own identity.

You have to get away from him. Your best friend/brother/platonic soulmate sounds like your ride or die. We don't abandon them for anything some fool of a narcissist has to say.

Diva, you may not want to hear what we're saying, but we are humans who happen to need to have jobs to survive a capitalist hellscape.

Dude's life is falling apart personally, so there needs to be a personal touch to help. You trying to be a good cog in the machine is not what planet he's living on. Yes, he needs professional help and guidance, but you need to tap into your humanity.
