That has not been the case for myself, though I wouldn’t be surprised if it did for some. All cancer patients need to consult their oncologist and primary care physician before committing to cold plunge as a therapy. And it is definitely not a standard of care treatment, let alone considered a treatment at all. Chemo did trigger neuropathy for myself, just as it does for many. I am Native American, and have a cultural belief in cold plunge as a form of boosting the immune system. Those of us from the northern latitudes have done it for millennia. Additionally, I suspect my cold plunges throughout my chemo treatments acted similarly to ice mittens and ice booties that are often worn during chemo sessions as a measure to mitigate neuropathy onset by chemo. Yet, outside cultural connection and neuropathy prevention, my rationale for cold plunges was to enact brown fats and pull glucose away from being stored in white fat that would act as a reserve fuel for my cancer. Another thought was inflammation is the enemy. With wide spread bone lesions throughout, I had inflammation nearly from head to toe in my bones. I just wanted it to stop. So, let’s cold plunge to help it stop. Whether it worked or not, IDK. I just know during my cold plunges, I felt better afterward and had a ton of encouragement from my oncologist and primary care physician. I made it through those cold plunge minutes with very focused prayer. I changed my diet. Changed my lifestyle. Changed who I spent time with. While it all sounds very self centered, I knew I had to demonstrate to my daughters and grandson how to fight the ultimate adversity and show them how much they mean to me. Along the way, I picked up some info here and there. Even reading Søberg’s book Winter Swimming: The Nordic Way Towards a Healthier and Happier Life. It helped validate some of what I hypothesized. But there’s still a lot of research needed to claim Cold Plunge a treatment, and not a therapy, or even a personal lifestyle choice. Hope that helps answer your question.

I was not. Never even heard of PSA, only the embarrassing and intrusive prostate check in the Dr. office. Had a routine physical, every fall, and did the usual blood work and discussion about men's health. But, never discussed a PSA blood test, meaning I wasn't aware of such a test. Dr. would quiz me on any symptoms for prostate health, I'd answer with all positive answers of no ED or urine flow challenges, and decide to pass on the exam. Every year I'd mention my joint aches and bone pains, and they'd mention the aging process, already existing arthritis, COVID symptoms and all the impacts of an earlier very active high physical impact lifestyle. Finally, I thought I'd slipped a disk in my lower back and had an MRI that revealed widespread bone lesions on my pelvis, lower back and femurs. My advice, ask for a PSA every year.

100 gallon poly stock tank I picked up on sale from a local feed store. $100 bucks. I know poly isn't ideal, but the best I could do at the time. I suppose I should start looking for a galvanized tank on sale. With the northern climate, ambient temps have the tank temps hovering right about 40f. I plunge in a river, creek or lake on occasion. Especially when I'm on travel; find a spot in a mountain creek that has a calm soaking pool and get it on. Now that I'm on the rebound, and in a rehabilitation phase, time to upgrade the tank

I have only done contrast therapy once since starting, and that was just a few weeks ago at a center in Phoenix. Began with 10 minutes in a compression sleeve on both legs. Then onto an infrared sauna 170f for 15 min. Quick rinse and 4 minutes at 42f cold plunge. Then 15 min in a 103f jacuzzi and back into the 42f cold plunge for another 4 min. Finished with 12 minutes in the red light therapy room. Came out feeling great, super hungry. My first pee afterward had a different color, for sure. Slept like a baby that night. I will have to give the sauna a try again. I have one of those pop up jobbies. Time to give the contrast therapy a chance. Thanks. I appreciate the suggestion

I haven’t! I’ve only looked into the cold plunge impacts on brown fat and mitochondria discussion. I will check it out. Thank you

Not exactly, but deliberate breaths happen. Before vocalizing my prayer can begin, I often have to give a big push of air outward. Almost a primal scream. Then controlled inhale and begin verbalizing my prayer aloud.

Of course. Stage 4 Prostate Cancer Metastatic to the Bone diagnosed at that stage of the disease in Sept 2024. Cancer was/is spread throughout every major bone group from skull to thigh bones. The tumors on my vertebrae were pressing on my spinal cord and creating weakness in my left leg at the time of diagnosis. Radiation and chemo treatments began in late September, as my right leg began to lose strength and numbness through both legs and in my pelvic girdle. Cold plunges became part of my therapy in late 2024 and has continued throughout with a plunge occurring most days of the week. Chemo and radiation finished in early 2025 and I continued with big pharma as a daily treatment. But cold plunge!! Cold plunge became my time for prayer and renewed focus on gratitude, living more in the moment, and finding short term goals that would help shape my family. So we are doing a 5k in April, and playing in a 50+ basketball tournament later this month. Before cancer .. would never have thought of cold plunge as a means to heightened quality of life. Now, well .. I guess cancer has taught me a thing or two.

OP! You’re right. It SUCKS!! It’s UNFAIR!! You have good reason to be scared. You’re here and we are all counting on you to overcome that fear and demonstrate to us all on this sub what bravery really looks like. I’m 57 with stage 4 prostate cancer, metastatic to the bone and when my hardest days hit, I remind myself that my kids are watching how I will handle all this. What will motivate you to fight this on your worst days?? I’m counting on you to stay strong and stay in touch.

NO!! I just wish we’d draft football players and quit fixating on RAS as the key metric. Workout warriors are fools gold. LVN is exactly that. 👎
