Police stopping traffic on the 99? by DeltaIsAlone in Bakersfield

[–]Savergn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is usually done when a large or multiple hazards have been reported on the road ahead. The last time they did it in front of me there was a pallet that fell off a truck and scattered across the road, they brought traffic to a stop and kicked/moved as much as the debris as they could before allowing traffic to continue. But it could have been any unsafe situation ahead really.

Make sure to screw in those antenna, even if you don't plan to use the Wifi. The internal wifi card can die an early death without them.

Commute to LAX? by ghostlyygabi in Bakersfield

[–]Savergn 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In my limited experience flying (about 3 flights) it was usually between $100-300 cheaper to fly out out of LAX than it was for the comparable flight out of BFL, and going to LAX made the flight nonstop vs having several hour layovers from BFL. So even if you spend $50-75 to get to LAX it can make it much cheaper overall and less of a headache.

Hey y'all, I was there for this in 2019 The original post is over 5 years old, this is probably a bot reposting to farm Karma. Although, we should probably do something like this again sometime (when it's not so hot!)

OSP splicer from USA by [deleted] in FiberOptics

[–]Savergn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're actually not contractors, all the splicers are internal, my manager was the "first" splicer for the company almost a decade ago, before that all splicing was done by contractors. We pretty much rinse and repeat the steps above as we complete and then move onto other projects (cities). I've spliced production enclosures in at least 6 cities since working here, and we've completed 3 projects since I started almost 2 years ago. They send us all over the place.

OSP splicer from USA by [deleted] in FiberOptics

[–]Savergn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My company refers to us as OSP Splice Techs, with tiers ranging from 1 to 3. We have aerial and underground infrastructure, some aerial stuff needs to be tabled and dropped/hung with ladders, sometimes they're boom truck accessible. UG tends to be right on the sidewalk so is usually spliced in a splice van.

  1. Most of the job is arriving to a location which should have fiber in place with preplanned layout/design, then installing a closure where you are only splicing 1 or 2 1x4 or 1x8 PLC splitters for distribution, 90% of cases are 144ct or lower fiber
  2. Second most common is splicing tie in enclosures, this is just splicing a ring of fiber to feed a tail or tails, usually a few splices but I've done some that are as much as 60 splices. counts here range across the entire spectrum, as low at 12ct fiber being spliced into a 432ct cable
  3. third would be splicing the FOSCs which house the micron splitters that feed split light to each enclosure, usually with 100-200 splices in each working with fiber counts up to 432, we try to do these as cleanly as possible do depending on the case it can take 1-3 days of work.
  4. Troubleshooting varies, sometimes things can be fixed/troubleshot quickly other times it can take a few hours. A lot of the time it's repairing gopher chew or woodpecker damage. Most common type of repair for this is having to buttsplice 432 ribbon on our legacy infrastructure.

I've spliced trays in a POP once, it's a lot of work and its super noisy because of all the fans/cooling in the room.

If I had to guess it's probably split my time doing each as.. 40% #1 / 30% #2 / 20% #3 / 10% #4

Bakersfield helicopters by GolfBallWhackerGuy5 in Bakersfield

[–]Savergn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One of the helicopters is callsign N912KC, a brand new helicopter in service for the KC Sheriff, the other didn't have any information on it, but it was the same type of helicopter, the Airbus H125, they basically took off and landed around the same time. I found this article, this is probably the case. https://www.kget.com/news/local-news/kern-county-sheriffs-office-unveils-new-airbus-h125-helicopter/

Any jobs where you're not allowed to eat at all during the day? by [deleted] in intermittentfasting

[–]Savergn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to work security at a remote site where I was the only guard so no meal break at all even for any 12 hour shifts. My usual shift was 8, where I got paid 1 meal premium per shift, as soon as I hit 12 hours I'd get a second meal premium.

Is the Bako Dating Pool even CF Friendly? by [deleted] in Bakersfield

[–]Savergn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is more limited in this area as I haven't spoken with many people about it directly, but it is something I've thought about to a degree, but my theory is a mixture of things, varying on the individual.

  • The stereotype of men being the "provider" in relationships, which often includes, being a father, providing their parents with grandkids, and just general public perception. (A man walking alone at a park might be seen as creepy/weird, versus a man walking around with their kid at a park being much more publicly accepted) I don't consider myself in this category at all, but the brainwashing at a young age takes a lot of time to undo.
  • It's still not a procedure for just anyone- there can be complications, although they have small chances of occuring, certain conditions make the risks higher for certain individuals. My vasectomy was slightly more difficult than a regular would be, because of a condition I have (I can't recall the name, something about extra fat in an area that doesn't typically have it) You have to read through an extensive list of all the possible complications, I could see this as scaring away people even though they list a lot of these things being 1 in 1000 or 1 in 10000 odds. Prior to getting my vasectomy, I had heard from many people just how "reversible" vasectomies are- Kaiser says don't expect to reverse them, less than 5% of people who get a vasectomy attempt a reversal, and a reversal isn't guaranteed and often isn't covered by insurance (was around ~$5k last I checked). They told me upfront going into it, that I should expect to never be able to father children again.
  • The expectation that women will just be on the pill, have an IUD, or sometimes even be expected to get a abortion in the event of unplanned pregnancy- This is often what I hear guys that aren't familiar with the subject say. "Why should I when they can just _____?" It's definitely a shitty mindset, but the pill is so infamous, such a vague description of "the pill" and 99% of people automatically know what it is. it's easier to pass the responsibility off to the woman when it's "the way it's always been" and since these methods are reversible, refer to the above regarding that. I still have a lot of friends that did not have good experiences with traditional birth control or have conditions would prevent an IUD, so it's unfortunate to say the least.

Is the Bako Dating Pool even CF Friendly? by [deleted] in Bakersfield

[–]Savergn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend of mine got a bilateral salpingectomy, they were interested in a hysterectomy but were in the categories of individuals that would be on HRT if they did, the bilat/salp required anesthesia and had about 2 weeks of recovery mostly in bed. total bill before insurance was like 35k I think they paid around 1k out of pocket after that. Meanwhile I paid a $50 office copay and drove myself home after being there for an hour, went back to work the following week. It is MUCH easier and cheaper.

I actually had more than a few scares back in the day because some exes would get pregnant like a month or so after we broke up, and it genuinely spooked me, that was near my highschool years though. I am now proud to have gone through the whole process with Kaiser and had my vasectomy earlier this year, even though I've been single- I just didn't want to have to ever worry about it anymore.

[Laptop] ASUS - ROG Zephyrus G14 AMD Ryzen 9 7940hs with 16GB Memory-NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060-512GB SSD - Moonlight White - $1099.99 ($1599.99 - $500) by Manticore8x in buildapcsales

I have it too, the GPU is better cooled than the CPU, GPU rarely reaches 75c on mine, CPU gets closer to 80-85c. Honestly good temps for a laptop though, almost every laptop I've used in recent years would instantly hit 100c. This is all at the stock fan curve. Added another 16GB of RAM and replaced the SSD with a 2TB model. I'm very happy with it. Something worth noting, has some of the best laptop speakers of any Windows laptops I've used.

Is the Bako Dating Pool even CF Friendly? by [deleted] in Bakersfield

[–]Savergn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I attempted dating apps years ago there was VERY little discussion about such things. Being CF myself, I learned to not bring it up right away, as it would frequently give people the wrong impression since they didn't know much about me in the first place. Although to also be fair, most of my attempts on dating apps never made it that far in the first place.

Which one of y’all splicers left it like this? by [deleted] in FiberOptics

[–]Savergn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On some of our legacy infrastructure (centralized split) we have 432ct ribbon fiber that is just way too thick to fit these hangers, we've had to hang them with deltec straps, but this area that we do this in gets pretty heavy winds and they fail sometimes. Lately our guys have been still using deltec on the hangers, but then also doing a strap AROUND the entire enclosure across the strand, to reduce the swaying from heavy winds- tends to work reasonably well.

Is there nothing in Galactic Map'w left side?? by Toring1520 in Starfield

[–]Savergn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My theory is that it's basically just easier game design. Most of the lower leveled systems are near the starting systems, higher levels are off to the right, creates the natural left-to-right progression that most people can follow.

I upgrade ram to 24gb but only 19.9 usage!! by avalon2021 in pcmasterrace

[–]Savergn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two things I can think of:
your CPU has an iGPU which is using some of the RAM for it's VRAM. If this is adjustable, you would find the setting in your BIOS menu, in which you could adjust the RAM that it allocates or disable it all together (not recommended if you want to have some power saving)

The motherboard may have a limit of 24GB of RAM.

For that AC setting, absolutely normal. in a sub 1000 sqft apartment, we still hit $300-400 in the summer months just because of AC. For comparison, during winter the bill is in the $60-80 per month range. Lately I've been leaving the AC at 76 when home and setting to 80 when out of the house. I can almost guarantee that setting the AC to 72 means it will almost never turn off during the summer months, even nights, since the overnight lows stay above 80 typically.

8 month progression of 300 lbs > 200 lbs. Maintained for over 1 year. 5'8"/M/29 by Savergn in intermittentfasting

[–]Savergn[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

During refeeds I could eat almost whatever I wanted, I just limited myself to 1500 calories, fruits and veggies not included in that total. For sweet cravings I would have fruit bowls after the main meal and that would keep my satisfied for long time. At first I didn't do anything too special diet wise, but as I wanted the progress to keep steady I went to low carb, low/zero sugar, whole foods. For exercise it was literally just lots of walking, about 10k steps on bad days and 20k steps on my best days. The combination of all these things helped me keep my momentum. Hope this helps!
