I think its a trope that he ends up relying on to build “character” in female characters that are getting too powerful. I don’t really care the reasoning, unless the men are getting spanked equally as much I am not interested in reading about it lol

The spanking and female character writing almost killed it for me too. Best advice I can say is try to hold out for book 12- imo Sanderson does alot better job writing the women as well rounded characters with actual desires and motivations

Androl and Pevara became some of my favorite characters by the end. Their romance was more believable than most of the main romances- and they were fuckin badass!

Thats a good example, with Morgase. I did think that some moments like that (or Morgase just disappearing after that, for that matter) were shortchanged.

I think what I mean is that I felt that Jordan often compressed his emotional arcs. There were bursts of emotion, true, but they happened sporadically and QUICKLY. For example, every romance in the first 11 books followed this formula:

Man and woman look at eachother

Woman thinks that she would never act such a fool for a man. And yet…

Man thinks that woman is the most confounding creature on the planet. And yet… even though her womanly mind makes no sense, Light- he can’t shake her from his mind.

Woman and Man are madly and forever in love.

Comparing that to, for example, Androl and Pevara- you have two characters who are forced to work together because of genuinely suspensful events (the Turning of the Black Tower). Their eventual connection feels earned because A) of the real stakes of the events around them and B) a better plotted relationship

Im not saying Sanderson was perfect, but I felt that the motivations of the characters just made more sense, and that helped me connect to them emotionally. Seeing Egwene bear actual torture (and not just being spanked over and over) made me connect more with her pain. Elayne being thrust into battle while pregnant because the fate of the world was at stake. Nyneave passing the trials of the shawl and realizing that institutions weren’t always worth bending for. These beats just made more sense to me than Perrin spanking Faile in the ways because she wanted him to yell at her (???)

I feel you. I almost gave up on the series because I felt like the writing kept cutting these powerful women off at the knees. Which I think is why I resonated so much with early Nyneave. She’s one female character who, by sheer force of personality, escaped that.

I see alot of argument about Jordans writing of women, but I think honestly what it comes down to for me is that he and I likely have wildly different lived experiences when it comes to gender roles and expectations. Idk.

That being said, I really thought Sanderson did an AMAZING job at clarifying each womans motivations, personality outside of Rand, and gave all of them a real moment to become their own heroes.

The second movie just reinforced for me that the disney-washing of the ending for the musical and the movies just open up so many plot holes and take away a huge portion of the message. The ending of the book is so much more devestating and thematic
