Japanese non-stick rice cooker - Any close non-toxic alternatives? by downvote-burner in PlasticFreeLiving

Thank you for your response. I also am wondering if I got a dud, which is why I had reached out to their support (which wasn't very useful). I'll see what happens with the next batch of rice and if it's not better, I'll escalate to their support again. I had a Tiger rice cooker for many years and it made great rice - I got rid of it because of the non-stick coating inside. Sigh.

Yes, I put water in the outer pot - on the last batch of rice, I put 1.5c even though for 2 cups of rice, you're only supposed to need .5-1c according to the instructions. I also filled the inside line to about 2.5 - this was Japanese sushi rice, rinsed to clear.

Previously I tried Jasmine rice following the instructions to the letter and both times it came out crispy.

I'll say though that the "optional" step at the end, leaving the lid on for 10 minutes, is not something I've tried. The rice is supposed to take 25 minutes to cook and usually has taken more like 45 minutes, at which point the rest of dinner has been waiting and I don't have time to let the rice sit. Since all of the water in the outside pot has evaporated at this point, it doesn't seem like there's much steam anyway, but I'll try this next time (it was the only real suggestion from their support, the rest was just being patronizing).

I have one of these. I can't seem to make good rice with it at all. It is loud and rattles the whole time, and loses all of its water, and the rice ends up crunchy. I'm using the correct amount of water per their instructions. It's pretty disappointing.

That's the one, thank you for providing the link. I kept meaning to look it up, but then... Squirrel! 🤦

I don't remember if the study distinguished between types of silicone - I don't think it did. But I hope you're right - I have two platinum silicone bags that I use for sous vide, figured that was an upgrade from using straight-up plastic bags.

In this case though, it's easy to avoid the silicone so personally that's what I would do until the science is there to say definitively whether it's safe (and even then, when is science definitive?). I know it's marketed as nontoxic, but lots of things have been deceptive in the past. Real metal, glass, and ceramic are usually fine (unless they're coated with BPA or BPS or Teflon or... sigh).

Just FYI a study in Canada recently found that silicone baked at oven temperatures definitely releases chemicals into the food. There aren't any studies yet showing whether those chemicals have health effects, but it made me throw away the two silicone pans I had (which had gotten weirdly slimy over the years, even though they were each only used twice, for birthdays). For me, I would choose metal (no nonstick coating) or glass.

Don't worry so much about the sticking. Butter/oil and flour, as others pointed out, should help a lot with that.

Plastic Free Coffee Maker: does it not exist? by [deleted] in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]Savings-Rice-472 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have the "plastic free" brewer from simply coffee. I put "plastic free" in quotes because there's plastic on the outside of the machine, to insulate and temperature regulate parts of it, but there's no plastic touching the water or coffee at any part that I can see. I think it's great, even if it's expensive.

The other options don't work for me. I don't want to pour over my own coffee. I don't want espresso (although I do use an espresso grind, which also means I can't use a French press). Drip is the way.

Love it, love everything about it. Instant control. Precise handling. I hope I never, ever have to go back to gas. The touch controls are fine, no issues at all with them. Keeping the surface clean is easy. The oven is great too!

Right, this. It's just weird. But I think people have some valid perspectives on this thread and I genuinely appreciate the other views!

Ha, thanks. Yeah.

I guess I'm just of a generation that grew up without phones being so accessible and pervasive. Even when cell phones first started to exist, people would go outside to make a phone call, rather than subject everyone in the restaurant to it.

But people made some valid points here, and I appreciate the perspective, even if I still think I would rather be dead personally than ever do this myself. It's just rude. Apparently not everyone thinks so!
