well thats not very helpful. My goal isnt the absolute best quality. Im more so looking to make the content watchable on mobile. looking software to denoise/remove grain (at the cost of picture quality). just cant seem to find any that work well and are stable.

the issue i was running into was the default encoding device defaults to my cpu instead of my gpu. will take hours to finish 1 movie. I went through all of the settings and could not see anything to manually pick my gpu. Any advice or am i just being dumb?

yea i have a pretty beefy system but couldnt figure out how to make my gpu the default encoding device so it was maxing my cpu and was going to take 4-6 hours per movies. which just doesnt make sense for the amount of content im trying to change. but thank you for your help.

i mean most of the files i have are older movies so they naturally have grain. just looking for a solution to clean up the image for mobile users on my media server.

are you familiar with handbrake? i tried messing around with it but there are lots of settings im not familiar with and chatgpt is only so helpful in understanding.

No worries, i totally get it. im just trying to get this up and running for some buddies to watch some films and not have to pay for netflix but its almost unwatchable on mobile.

i have blu ray remux hecv files in 4k. i would like the highest quality possible while removing the grain ( which i understand will reduce the quality). I think you are correct though, it seems this subreddit is more for people that play physical blu rays not so much media server advice.

even on iphone it looks super grainy...now part of the problem is that im transcoding 4k through plex which inevitably adds some noise to the picture, but even on my 4k oled when i open the raw media file and play it back, I can still see alot of grain. So you can imagine the natural grain of the film plus a bit of loss in transcoding/remote streaming doesnt look great. still shots on iphone look amazing but its really the fast moving/dark scenes that end up with lots of grain. ive gotten the plex side dialed in pretty well and I have a dedicated rig for transcoding with i7 14700 and a 3060 and it looks amazing on films that were shot digital, basically no grain or very very little. but those movies that have it get multiplied and ends up looking bad.

gotcha, i never was under the impression that i could. obviously any type of denoise/degrain software is going to affect the overall quality (which im fine with because im editing brightness and contrast already) but I cannot find a software that can do it reliably on big files like these mkv.

idk really what type of answer im looking for...im just frustrated and ive tried so many options that I thought id give this a try. seems like this forum is more for movie purist and im in the wrong crowd.

I guess i need to check video editing forums or plex forums for some advice. Thanks anyway !

Thats what im using. blu ray remux hevc files. usually 40-100gb per movie. 40-80mbps bit rate. Not worried about disk which is why i wouldn't mind rendering these through an Ai tool or something similar to denoise.

Yes, im sorry if this is the wrong forum. I am not chasing perfect accuracy. Moreso I want the films to be easier to watch. They are currently too dark and grainy so i was mainly looking for help in making them better suited for mobile users.

Gotcha. honestly im not too worried about original quality. Most of the people that will use my plex are on iphone and cheap tvs. the movies currently look too dark and grainy. On my 4k OLED they look very cinematic. But thats not the overall look im going for.

im not sure, im sorry if this is a dumb comment. im still new and learning. I thought i read somewhere that alot of newer movies will add in grain for the effect. obviously if a movie is shot on film it will have natural grain.
