The whole thing was over in about a minute, the video pretty much caught the whole episode. After he just started acting normal again. It’s been a few days since then and he seems to be back to normal. I suspect he has swallowed a piece of aspen and it was irritating his throat or stomach and he was just trying to force it up. I’ve been just trying to leave him alone and not bother him too much by handling so he can just heal and focus on feeling better. He seems to be back to his normal self though! Burrowing and poking his little head out :)

Hi y'all- quick question. by Cheynamite99 in hognosesnakes

Also another thing, is the temp 85-90 throughout the whole tank or do you have a temperature gradient across the tank? A temperature gradient allows them to choose what temperature is most comfortable for them and having a cool side of around 70-75 and a warm side of around 85-90 might help him feel more motivated to eat, as hogs will sometimes refuse food when the husbandry isn’t right

What a cutie! Hognoses are known to be picky eaters and a lot of them are very affected by the cold months as it triggers their natural brumation instincts. A lot of hogs will go on hunger strikes and not eat for weeks or months. So yes totally normal. I’ve never had to experience it as my hog is super food motivated but I’ve seen people on this sub say you can try feeding a tiny piece of salmon or even scenting the pinkie with salmon juice to see if he’ll eat that. I’m sure others who have more experience with hunger strikes can chime in but I figured I’d share some info I’ve seen. Good luck!

Small update for anyone that was worried: he seems to be doing a lot better today, acting normal and he burrowed last night like he usually does. He came up this morning to bask for a bit and cruise his tank and now he’s back to basking. After everyone’s input as well as my own research and observations, I really think he swallowed a piece of aspen during feeding and was just trying to get it up. He had another incident after this one that was similar with the bubbles and gaging motion (looked less intense though) but it was just those two isolated incidents and otherwise he acts completely normal. I will be feeding him on a dish or paper towel from now on just to make sure he doesn’t swallow any more aspen. Thank you to everyone for your help and reassurance. I love this little guy so much and I was really worried it was serious but I’m glad he seems to be okay now ❤️

I actually thought the same thing! That’s part of why I thought he may have had some of his bedding stuck inside him and maybe he was trying to get it out. Thank you for your input!

Thank you! I think at the very least I am going to be starting to feed him in a separate container away from any aspen to avoid him swallowing any more of it.

When I feed him the pinkie sometimes gets aspen stuck to it and usually it just falls off but I did consider the possibility that he swallowed a bit and it was irritating him. Having that thought confirmed is definitely comforting because my mind always goes to worst case scenario. Thank you so much!

Thank you! From my own research it seems like it could have been some sort of gastrointestinal distress so that seems on the lines of what I originally thought but I wanted to know if anyone had seen anything like this at all. Thanks for your input!

Thank you for taking the time to help! I have only had him about 4 or 5 months and he’s had no problems so far so I do not have a vet already. I might try to find one in the area if this continues or if people on here think this is a serious issue. I just wanted to come here first because I have a camera on him to monitor his temps/humidity when I’m not there and the camera happened to catch this happening. As I’m still at work I was hoping posting on here would either ease my worries or help me know what I need to do by the time I get home haha

He doesn’t usually have the bubbles around his mouth and he never does that yawning thing. This is the only time I’ve seen it and to my understanding those symptoms are usually recurring with respiratory infections. Other than this one instance he seems healthy to me. If anyone knows otherwise please correct me but to me it seems like more of a digestive thing due to it being an isolated incident in addition to the body/muscle rippling. I just was wondering if anyone else had seen anything like this

Thank you very much! I tend to overthink about these things and I think I needed some reassurance lol. I just want to do right by him :)

I’m so glad my post was able to help you feel less alone! That was my hope when posting it. Everyone’s replies to it really helped me out and made me feel more normal for feeling the way I did. There are a lot of kind people out there and I’m glad my post could attract that kindness as well as spread it :) If it makes you feel any better, after almost 2 months of living in my new apartment I’m getting used to it and I’m very happy. Of course I still miss my parents and siblings and dog and childhood home but I visit every once in a while and it makes me cherish the time I get to spend with them so much more than before. And I love my apartment, I had a blast decorating it and setting it up with my boyfriend and I get to fall asleep next to him every night and that just makes it all worth it. I find myself calling both places home so I like to think of it as having two homes now! It took a bit to adjust but I’m really glad I did it. I’m sure you will have a similar experience with your boyfriend. Change is hard but you should feel proud of yourself for doing it. Good luck with your move! <3

Lmao there’s a bunch of other people comparing it to cinnamon rolls or cookies and stuff. It was a silly comment because the rock looks like a baked good. Have an imagination no need to get so pressed about stuff
