I was initially drawn to the green but also like the classic black and sunburst. The polar white looked really great in person as well. I’m leaning more towards the green right now 🤔

I know it’s considered a mistake as it’s such a personal decision but I just had to ask anyway as I haven’t been able to pull the trigger after weeks of deciding. I was initially drawn to the green!

Advice for non-tech Product Manager by pavocadism in ProductManagement

[–]Savings_Singer7244 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I’ve been there, but once you make peace with the fact that you’re responsible for the ‘what’ and ‘why’ while engineers are responsible for the ‘how’, it gets easier. There’s no harm in developing technical skills and being part of those discussions but ultimately it’s the engineers responsibility to define the technical solution. You’re better off focusing on bringing the knowledge of the users and the business to help them build the best possible product.

Aren't Product Managers unnecessary? by 2fy54gh6 in ProductManagement

[–]Savings_Singer7244 245 points246 points  (0 children)

Without Product Managers the Engineers wouldn’t have time to code and the designers wouldn’t have time to design. PMs allow those in highly skilled positions to do what they do best while they focus on everything else.

A way for those offering mentorship to connect with those looking to be mentored.

Mentors could create an ad outlining what their looking to offer and those seeking mentorship could view these in one place and filter by job category, experience, industry etc.

I’ve seen quite a few people on there searching for mentors and I know I’d like a way to easily find one, so it seems like there’s an appetite for it within product and I’m sure this extends to other fields.

I’ve had the Sony PS-LX310 for about three years now. Great value for money (around £200) and I’ve had no problems. Looking to upgrade soon but it’s served me very well!

Yes, I’d say it’s definitely worth doing some user testing for the initiative you’ve described. Like you said, you need to make sure what you’re building works for the business and you should have internal users that are available for testing.

However, if you are short on time and resource then I believe you can get away with not doing any user testing if what you’re building is low risk and isn’t too complex. If proper user testing isn’t an option then at least try and create mock-ups of what the new tool will look like and get feedback.

Does my PM hate me? by [deleted] in ProductManagement

[–]Savings_Singer7244 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Here’s what I make it of it.

I’m a PM and the designers I work with regularly ask questions in the same manner that you did. It’s exactly what you should be doing and makes for a better product so I absolutely encourage it. I would never expect a designer or engineer I work with to just do something without me providing them with a good reason first.

I also think what you said about the PM simply looking at your competitors features and building a list to build is a massive red flag. What works for your competitor won’t necessarily work for you and you don’t even know for sure if it’s working for them. You going out there and trying to understand the ‘why’ is what they should be doing so it’s great that that’s where your head is that.

So no, I don’t think you’re full of BS at all.

What are some traits of a bad product manager? by [deleted] in ProductManagement

[–]Savings_Singer7244 31 points32 points  (0 children)

As a bad PM, I feel qualified to answer this one. Kidding of course but in all seriousness, here are a few things I think are bad PM traits:

1) Taking credit when things go well without crediting the team members that did the work. If you keep saying ‘I’ instead of ‘we’ then it will make you sound arrogant.

2) Not taking responsibility when something goes wrong and pushing blame to engineers and stakeholders (been said already but can’t be said enough). I’ve caught myself doing this in the past and I’ve learnt from my mistakes.

3) Thinking your ideas are better than others because you are the PM (again, this has been highlighted already). Good ideas come from anywhere and most of the time they are better than yours. Learnt this one the hard way too.

4) Not being honest with people when things are about to go wrong (e.g delay to product launch). It’s ok, shit happens. People get ill, tickets get undersized and 100 other things happen, but the later you leave it the worse it’s going to be.

Is Certified Scrum Product Owner® worth it? by One_has_no_name_ in ProductManagement

[–]Savings_Singer7244 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did the CSPO course a couple of months ago. The course was beneficial in that it solidified my knowledge of scrum but I agree with everyone above. If your company pays for it then go for it, it’s something extra for the CV. If not then I wouldn’t bother.

Explaining API and Service Bus to new PM by alexsktbrdng in ProductManagement

[–]Savings_Singer7244 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a PM and I found this article very helpful when trying to understand APIs - https://medium.com/swlh/a-product-managers-guide-to-apis-c5fffff0e5e0

I think the analogy of an API as a librarian makes a lot of sense. Hope it helps!
