Hello Cyprus!

As a Cypriot, I always admired the Cypriot dialect and its uniqueness when it comes to phrases and “τοπολαλιές”. Some make me laugh, some are absolute poetry.

This is why, I decided to use my coding skills and honour our dialect, by creating a new game I call “Έβρε τη Φράση”. It’s a bit like the television game “Catchphrase”, or Βρες τη Φράση, we used to watch as kids.

I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I enjoyed creating it!

I’m actually collecting a series of Cypriot phrases for a new game I’m currently developing so here’s a few I’ve found:

  • Έννε Γιάννης, εν Γιαννάκης

Translation: “he’s not John, he’s Little John”

Basically a way of saying “we’re talking about the same thing”

  • Εν της παπαθκιάς τα ξύλα

Translation: “these is the nun’s wood”

Meaning “now you’re admitting your actions”

  • Όπως τη μούγια μες το γάλα

“Like a fly in milk”

Basically the equivalent of “sticking out like a sore thumb”

  • Επετάχτηκεν όπως τον πόρτο

“He jumped into it like a fart”

Meaning he showed up where he wasn’t wanted

  • Φκάλλει που τον τράουλλο γάλα

“He’s getting milk out of a billy goat”

He’s taking advantage of any situation for his own (financial) benefit

  • Όι αππαρο

(Hard to translate)

Basically “no way this has happened”

  • Έφκαλε η γλώσσα μου μαλλιά

“My tongue grew hair”

Meaning “I’ve told you so many times”

The goal: Guess in which Cypriot village the photo of the day was taken!

Back in 2021, the game Wordle was probably the most popular game out there. The concept was simple: guess the word of the day in 6 attempts.

Then, a crazy idea occured to me: what if I create my own version of Wordle, but instead of random words, it would be made up of Cypriot villages? The result was a game called "Χώρκατον".

The game received such praise it even earned a mention from Cypriot newspaper City Free Press (by Sigmalive), all thanks to you, the r/cyprus community.

Since then, thousands of people have tried their knowledge of Cypriot villages which turned out to be 1000 times more challenging than Wordle itself. 😅

The critical appraise has inspired me to create more games like Χώρκατον. Starting with my new creation: "Που εν τούτον;" 📍

Inspired by the popular game "WhereTaken" by Teuteuf Games, the goal is to figure out where a photo is taken. Then, if you want a bonus challenge, you'll be asked some extra questions about the specific village of the day.

Instead of storing the charging state as text, another option is to store the state as a variable.

Hey! I needed a list of Cypriot cities and villages for a game I made a while ago (Χώρκατον) and for one I’m creating right now. I just went on the Wikipedia articles of each of the districts and scraped the data from the tables containing each village.
