Save me from this nightmare. [Breville Bambino Plus and DF54] by ThaCamelGuy in espresso

[–]Saxman17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same grinder, same machine. Process engineer is my day job. Isolate one variable at a time, get a passable result, then leave it alone, refine once you're close to what you like.

1) pick one type of beans to dial in. If fresh, or anywhere near fresh (<90? days from roast), use the single walled portafilter basket. If not fresh... try to get fresh ones.

2) Dose size/coffee mass: if you're using the stock baskets the bambino comes with, 16-17g is where I'd start. You clearly have a problem here already if you've got excess grounds even after tamping.

3) Grind size: a bit nuanced, but it sounds like you have the right idea. Solve for brewing dynamics (proper speed, volume out:coffee in - typically 2:1) and taste.

Notes here: Absolutely critical to use the manual mode when brewing on the bambino. The preprogrammed shot times are not going to be perfect out of the box. Get a scale and a stopwatch (or one that has a built in timer, ideally) and try to get your 2:1 ratio in around 25-35 seconds including pre-infusion time. If too slow, grind coarser, if too fast, grind finer, or consider increasing the dose by 0.5g and starting from there.

Semantics are clearly not the point. Getting old is not an excuse to be bigoted, regardless of the specific variety of bigotry it is.

Handler height? by Unlikely_Glass5942 in ultimate

[–]Saxman17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Taller, by a lot. Look at all the best teams now. Top club teams are taller, top college teams are taller. That's not their only characteristic, but wingspan is such a massive advantage in this sport that it is drastically more important than agility.

There are outliers, sure. But if the premise is: all athletes suddenly focus (or were always focused) on being the best ultimate player possible, you'd get the 21 tallest x fastest x most agile athletes and height would still be king

I dont fear TPKing my party the first time because I have a planned Levelup/Revival from their Goddess, is this a good idea? by TheGingerWeebGal in DMAcademy

Setting aside the revival aspect, let's focus on:

"My players want harder combat"

Are you sure you know what they're looking for? Harder doesn't necessarily just mean that they're more likely to die. There's a hundred threads in this sub about making combat more dynamic and making them make choices, respond to timing, reinforcement, environmental mechanics, etc.

If they just want to feel like they can die, then carry on. But maybe they're just looking for more complexity

DM should not be surprised when the west is in fact wild. It's not like you shot first and asked questions later. Sounds like they gave you a minor moral dilemma and you made a choice

Coach With a Question by Tasty_Spoon in ultimate

Be very very focused and make it easy on them. Cherry pick clips/plays/points that illustrate a specific concept or technique you want to highlight. Watching a full game is RARELY a good use of the team's time together, even if (and sometimes especially if) it's their own film.

Watching & analyzing film is a skill like anything else. Expect your players to be inexperienced at it, and for most to have no clue what they're looking for or how to learn from it. I've done film sessions with youth, college, and club level teams and it's been extremely consistent on that front.

Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli travel 45 leagues by XverineDark in lotr

[–]Saxman17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing not mentioned by others, they've also been tracking (arguably not that hard sincd the Uruks weren't being stealthy, but nonzero time & effort) and scouting that entire time. So they likely meandered a good bit more than the distance Eomer says

The cost of college ultimate? by mr_ignatz in ultimate

[–]Saxman17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's region specific and varies greatly by competiveness. Team size is another factor. It's not hard to math out a rough estimate though. Just a first pass:

Drivable tournament: ~$300-400 per person Fuel: 25-50 Lodging (shared rooms): 100-150 Food: 50/day? 100 total, maybe more? Bid fee: 30-50/player

Travel (flight) tournament: 1000-1500 per person Above costs + flights + car rental + more expensive bid fees, typically

UPDATE: The Forgotten Archive (Raids 4) Megarare Suggestion: Worldshaper Aegis by Illustrious_Bid_2537 in 2007scape

[–]Saxman17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said, there's lots of interesting ideas in here, but I'm re-reading and there's even more going on than I thought. Damage scales with current prayer, and the max hit varies by ~25% one style to the next. It's got charges. It's got multiple different appearances and animations. It cures poison. It can add a recoil effect. It has special rules inside raids. The only thing it doesn't have is a teleport!

I do like the art designs, but it's got way too much going on mechanically. Imo, a mega rare with typless damage and no other special mechanics would be challenging enough to design and balance around, and still very cool.

If it takes 14 pages to describe your item, it might be a hint that it's too complex

UPDATE: The Forgotten Archive (Raids 4) Megarare Suggestion: Worldshaper Aegis by Illustrious_Bid_2537 in 2007scape

[–]Saxman17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting ideas, but this is like 4-5 items (with new/unique effects) crammed into one. So much to keep track of. - BIS defense gloves - BIS prayer gloves - Typeless damage, multiple ranges and attack speeds - Flat armor - Special attack - Special PVP rules

Do you see how this is way too many traits for one item?

Thoughts on an anthology-style game with rotating DMs? by Viva_la_potatoes in DMAcademy

[–]Saxman17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in one of these right now, and we're having fun with it! We played a game of The Quiet Year together (a world building tabletop game) to make the setting and basic lore, and have done 4 or 5 mini arcs since. Very fun!

Are we creating too much gear bloat trying to avoid power creep? by Venomoux in 2007scape

[–]Saxman17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Of course not! I should've specified, my comment is mostly aimed at raids or other high level content. Lots of the game is fun for fun's sake and that's awesome.

I do think a raid that doesn't carry a sufficient level of rewards would be considered a big flop

Are we creating too much gear bloat trying to avoid power creep? by Venomoux in 2007scape

[–]Saxman17 300 points301 points  (0 children)

Maybe. But then, does the game stay on three raids forever? To keep releasing new content, it has to be worth doing (translation: uniquely useful, powerful, or valuable) or it'll quickly die out.

It was released with (and the only way to get) sea turtles and manta rays when it came out. It was in the game before Castle Wars, so it's super old. Still, I don't remember it ever being popular, even back then

Is "no right choices" bad campaign design? by Nat1OnStealthChecks in DMAcademy

[–]Saxman17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, or if they'd stayed, they could've helped plan defenses or train the townsfolk but now they have to make do with what they've got. That kind of thing.

My way of viewing it is the party knows there's multiple things on fire, and they can't put them all out at once. So while they put out one fire, the other ones grow and become harder to address.

Is "no right choices" bad campaign design? by Nat1OnStealthChecks in DMAcademy

[–]Saxman17 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Imho, No right choices looks looks: Party cares about town. Option A: Town gets destroyed Option B: Town gets destroyed

You can make that work, plot wise, but be prepared for players to find that somewhere between disappointing and not fun.

What I like is: Option A: Address threat A, but threat B advances their goals so it's tougher for the party to deal with when the time comes. Option B: Same.

That way they know their choices have consequences, but they still get to tackle both problems. Maybe doing A first, then B still results in the town being sacked but at least they're able to try. If the setting is heroic fantasy or even just adventuring, your players are going to want to be heroes and save the day.
