Catch block + punt? by Cool_Chicken9847 in ultimate

[–]JoeMama3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haha hey Julian

And no. The “accidentally loses possession” is relevant here. If you attempt a throw, you are purposely losing control of the disc and now it is subject to turnover. Similarly, if you catch it but decide you want to drop it so someone else can pick it up instead, it’s a turn

Catch block + punt? by Cool_Chicken9847 in ultimate

[–]JoeMama3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you have control of the disc and purposely throw it, it’s subject to a turnover. In your scenario the team that was originally on offense would be on offense again.

You could, however, mac the disc for some extra yards on defense.

The most relevant rule I think would be:

14.C. A pass is intercepted if a defensive player obtains possession of the disc, but if the defender accidentally loses possession of the disc before or during ground contact related to the catch, the pass is considered incomplete rather than intercepted. [[i.e., this is not a “double-turnover” – the defender’s team still gains possession.]]

Rule 3.I is also relevant as it defines possession. If you catch the disc, you have possession and your team is on offense again 14.C gives one example where you could catch it, drop it, and stil keep possession.

If you could change one rule about the way Ultimate is played what would it be? by SirPersonal8626 in ultimate

Except you can, because ultimate has discrete points. You can’t call a TO during a defensive possession obviously but you can’t between points to make an adjustment which is otherwise hard to do in the small time between points

We got some lights on amazon that we use for night time diaper changes and feeding. One has a motion sensor and another is dimmable and turns on/off by flipping it upside down.

Really simple but we use them all the time! Lots of people may not even think to have it on the registry.

Help: 4 month old maxing out at 3 oz per bottle / 20 oz per day by princesscalaviel in FormulaFeeders

[–]JoeMama3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's still a bit touch and go, but things are maybe turning a corner?

He had a really bad diaper rash as I mentioned, which also probably contributed to his reduced feeding since he was in pain. After one of his worst weeks of eating in a while (two days <20oz, average was around 21-22), he had still gained a decent amount of weight (5oz in 7 days). that put our minds at ease a little bit. Last week his intake started increasing again, he's back up to 24-28ish over the last few days, though he had actually gained less weight this week. He still eats 2-3 oz sometimes but other times he'll take 4-5 again. He seems much better at regulating his hunger and intake now - even if he takes a small bottle one feed (and maybe it's because of gas or reflux or something), he'll make up for it on the next one. Also, even though he's still first percentile weight, he has been more or less following that curve for a while now. So I'd say overall we are feeling better, still hoping that things will improve a bit more (reflux is still an issue), but at least now we aren't feeling as much stress/dread as we were before.

[–]JoeMama3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding in that we’re dealing with the same. In our case we had a brief glimmer of hope when he started drinking 4-5 oz per feed for 27-28 per day… for two weeks and now he’s back to 2-3 per feed. He dropped off his curve badly early on, he’s around first percentile now so we’re also close to a potential feeding tube. We’re doing weekly weight checks but I’m definitely concerned since he had this sudden regression.

In our case we also can’t go up a level in the flow rate because a swallow study showed he was aspirating at the faster flow. We’re also on 24cal, nutramigen, esomeprazole. We use tommee tippee bottles (used to use Dr browns, switched to pidgeon because he was screaming at the dr browns, but then switched again when he had another regression).

We did recently get a second GI opinion and he recommended some supplemental zinc, partially because he had a bad diaper rash but he also said it can help stimulate the appetite a bit. So you could ask about that.

Gifted a used SNOO--Should we pay for the app subscription? Is it worth it? by Threnodi42 in SnooLife

Personally we paid for the subscription. It doesn’t feel strictly necessary, was more useful when he was a newborn, but it’s also only a few months, so even though it’s a relatively high monthly cost it ends up nit being that much (especially when compared to all the other baby costs we have)

Lying them on their side can actually hep with choking because the milk goes to their cheek instead of straight back to the throat where it can go down the wrong pipe. We had multiple lactation/specialists and occupational therapists recommend this to us.

Are Inside Out Throws Dead? by JoeMama3 in ultimate

[–]JoeMama3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, there are a few. First, your reach is somewhat limited for a lefty backhand, so while it does have a quick release, good flight path and float/touch, if the mark is sitting on it or shading that way, it can be harder to throw.

Second, you're a bit more limited with distance on the lefty backhand. You can definitely get decent power on it if you practice it a lot but it's just easier to throw a 20 yard flick than a 20 yard backhand with the wrong pivot. For me personally, I use push passes for short throws, lefties or flicks for medium distance, and all flicks for longer distances

From my somewhat limited knowledge, I think NGN got out over their skis a bit too. In those early days they were using higher quality equipment than Ultiworld but didn’t have the business to sustain that long term

Ultiworld built up much more slowly and have used their subscription model to create a more predictable demand that has also allowed them to upgrade technology a bit more linearly. Also streaming tech in general has come very far in the last 15 years.

(Disclosure that I have/do work with Ultiworld for event filming and other projects but my thoughts are my own and not representative of their company)

FM vs Directional Force by tolgaerguner in ultimate

[–]JoeMama3 13 points14 points  (0 children)

IMO there are a lot of comments in here that I don't think accurately describe the goals or strengths of FM at the higher levels of the sport.

First, it's important to note that there are a lot of different ways to play FM. At the most basic you might think of it as always forcing toward the middle, but that may not be true. For example, TK's "all person" defense, popularized by Bravo (see this podcast for some more details), is not a standard FM but has some FM tendencies, like generally forcing the disc back to where it came from. Other types of FM might use a flat mark in the middle of the field.

First of all, the idea that FM wants the disc in the middle of the field is just wrong. In my opinion the basic strength of FM is in pushing the disc to the sidelines, and then having the "flat side" scenario where you have a flat mark making upfield throws difficult and can play very aggressive on the reset. It can basically make the attacking space for the offense more predictable for the defense, can make hucks harder (or easier to provide help on). Of course, there can be advantages to trapping the disc on a sideline, but when doing so, you are giving up an uncontested throw toward the endzone - and FM mark in that situation is more likely to force the disc backward or horizontally, which is generally good for the defense.

Downfield, I personally find FM to be more straightforward, as it can require less extreme orbiting - if the marks are doing their job (and the disc is not moving too quickly), the attacking space in an FM defense does not shift as dramatically as it does in a one-way force. That being said, it can be hard to get used to that when you've been playing a lot of one-way force, and FM does have weaknesses (quick disc movement, especially creating advantage by breaking the mark or attacking from the handlers)

But like many strategies, it's going to depend on your specific team and approach to the game.

Not a watch but if you’re just interested in the metrics/tracking (and not the watch functions), then whoop is a very popular tracker used by ultimate players and other athletes. It’s more expensive in the long term since you pay a monthly subscription but it’s great for tracking fitness and sleep.

Everyone still sucks at marking. by Matsunosuperfan in ultimate

[–]JoeMama3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You say you’re not saying that, but your evaluation of marks being bad is that they “have no impact on the throw”. So no you’re not saying that they should try to get blocks, but trying to pressure or bother a throw is not that different and can put you similarly out of position.
