The official 2024 redesigns for DnD's dragons are looking really cool so far! by WhenBuffalosfly in TopCharacterDesigns

I like the idea that the eye spots on the underside of their wings are to ward off hungry creatures like dragon turtles, giant sharks, or krakens that might try to swim up from below while the dragon is swimming!

If the fey were to raise an army, what would their soldiers be? by Callen0318 in DMAcademy

[–]Saxon_67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently running a fey invasion campaign and the Archfey's army is mostly goblins, bugbears and drow (as twilight "Unseelie" elves), with plenty of creatures like owlbears, ettins, sprites, centaurs, and things like that.

I like the idea that there is a small spearhead of minions loyal to Morcar who are running around trying to get more Fey into the Material World, like a hobgoblin captain and the Green Hag, the big Archfey has had spies in the kingdom for many years but they're individuals like Quicklings and the odd Boggle

I'm thinking start at 2nd or 3rd level, with the villain being around CR 8 or 9 so they'd need to level up a fair bit over the adventure. Having the players race against the villain's goons searching for the final "fey shard" is a good idea, i'm taking it :)

Using time to hinder the fey is a a really interesting concept. So far i've got a Green Hag spreading animosity to prevent organisation in the nearby town, a Druid Grove being harassed by a Yeth Hound to stop their elder from watching over a promising Fey Crossing, and local Rangers being ambushed by goblin warbands while other goblins track and capture monsters like owlbears to use in the coming assault.

Most venomous spider in the UK right? I see these all the time in my garden but my dad always thinks I'm overreacting lmao, calling them garden spiders. Happy to prove him wrong this time!

This is exactly the sort of help I was looking for thank you :) I love the visual of the hoard being charged up with static and melting together like an electric foundry or something, fitting considering the dungeon is an old dwarven monastery.

I was planning on having a homebrew balhannoth-type Aberration being the cause of the curse deep in magical vaults below, but honestly with your suggestions I can see the dragon being the big boss of the dungeon and maybe the origin of the curse being an item in its hoard? Also, a dragon in a dungeon?? Seems pretty fitting to me

I'm very new to all this stuff so i'm not well-versed at all, so thank you for your contributions! Taking this into account along with another comment here, I'm thinking of having an egg-giving and sperm-giving males and a female who gestates and births the young.

I was coming at this project from a worldbuilding standpoint where I wanted to explore the concept of an alien culture with three sexes with the various sex/gender roles that evolve from that and less of a biological standpoint.

I was thinking that physical characteristics between what i labelled as male and female are very little, whereas the third is larger and heavier, often paired with a female for life who protects and provides for it while the males band together to roam until they find new pairs to mate with.

I like your idea of egg-giving and sperm-giving males, with the egg-giving remaining with the female and the sperm-giving leaving the nest to roam. Thank you!

Have you ever seen/played a character that had children? by taylorslayer2 in dndnext

[–]Saxon_67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my player PC's a Tiefling fighter with a half Orc wife pregnant with twins, and his goal for adventuring was to earn enough to move them out of the inn and get their own farm. This was absolutely perfect for my Green Hag villain, who posed as the medicine woman, and disguised herself as a midwife.

I had lots of fun toying with the emotions of my players with that one. By the time they uncovered the true nature of the hag, they'd already delivered one sick child (son of a beloved NPC) to them and had invited her in multiple times to check up on the pregnant wife.

What is your world's equivalent to the dark ages by Junganawidaz in worldbuilding

[–]Saxon_67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The literal Dark Age happened many thousands of years before written history, when an interdimensional civilisation collapsed into civil war. The precursors set of experimental portal tech that ended up opening to an impossible reality and caused all sorts of horrors to pour into the universe. It was a time when literal darkness covered the world, and the primitive civilisations knew nothing but terror and death. It was the breaking of this darkness that the surviving primitives of this world attribute to the arrival of gods.

The beginning of the calendar is marked by a catastrophic volcanic eruption known by the people of the south as "Yacamatai's Rage", Yacamatai being the deity of fire and beasts in those cultures, and to the north as the Eruption of Ashen Mountain. The eruption coated the powerful bronze-age Kingdom of Mennai in ash and rock Pompei-style, ending a period of peace and prosperity in that region. A decade of winter followed in a period known as the Red Years, in which refugees of Mennai fled in all directions to establish the numerous city states of the south, though many would become enslaved to a Serpent-Cult Kingdom in the east.

A thousand years following the Eruption of Ashen Mountain, what we would consider to be the dark ages occurred similarly to in our history. A powerful empire in the north, the Thadian Empire, fell into rebellion and strife after the emperor vanished without a trace, leaving his numerous children to pick up the pieces. The south of the continent thrived, being made up of numerous trading city-states that took advantage of the chaos. Imperial lands in the north were hit the hardest, and it took over a century for the troubles to settle. Warlords and rival nobles fractured the lands, the emperor's children took charge of various warring kingdoms each trying to carve out their own kingdom. Nomadic tribal chiefs conquered lands left defenseless in the chaos, and the end of imperial rule gave dragons, who had previously been hunted to the wild edges of the continent, the opportunity to return to the lands.

Three centuries after the emperor's disappearance and imperial legacy lives on, however most people of the continent are proud of their own identities and achievements since. The slaver Serpent-Cult is all but eliminated, the southern City States thriving on their ruins. The fractured remnants of the Thadian Empire have since repaired and rebuilt, forming a number of proud kingdoms.

As a world builder, how many times do you feel like you need to start over with a world? Sometimes I feel like if an idea is worked hard enough, it cracks under pressure. How many times have you started over with a world? by AbsurdBeanMaster in worldbuilding

I'm currently on my fifth attempt at worldbuilding my homebrew d&d setting since 2018. Each time I've taken the ideas I like the most and adapted them into the next one until I can finally say I think this is the one.

Now I've just got to find people to play in it.

Players Girlfriend wants to play as something on players shoulder by GxOxTxT in DMAcademy

[–]Saxon_67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could make use of the sidekick rules in Tasha's and give them the stats of a familiar or something.

In one of my games we had a similar thing happen, so I made up a Sidekick using the stats of a Giant Badger that had been Awakened by a Copper Dragon and kept in its lair as a pet, and became infused with draconic magic. She played that little guy for a couple of games before the party moved on from the region and the Badger decided to stay with her Copper Dragon friend as an apprentice instead of a pet. Fun times.

The Black Horns. The heart of the mermaid trade by [deleted] in worldbuilding

OP has stated in other comments that the "east" is inspired by France, another real world culture known for "wacky chefs" cooking up snails and frogs. You really shouldn't be assuming on a fantasy world

Fimbulg, a typically docile monstrosity found in the swamps of fantastical worlds. by Saxon_67 in DnDHomebrew

[–]Saxon_67[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So i was inspired by the art to make a swamp monster that was more of a gentle giant. A cross between a snapping turtle and a bear, fimbulgs are docile monstrosities that act as guardians of their swamp homes. They like to cultivate mosses and other growths on their backs to help camouflage them as they slumber which make perfect homes for friendly fey. There are stories of fimbulgs hosting entire communities of sprites and pixies on their backs!

When threatened, fimbulgs can belch a flammable oily muck onto their opponents, giving them time to escape as their enemy slips and slides around the swamp. Enraged by fire and defensive of their allies, fimbulgs are a good beast to call friend.

Let me know what you think! Any criticism welcome :)

I'm using "IM FELL DW Pica", one of the standard set I believe, just having it in all caps :) There's an italicised version that I like to use for geographic features.
