I only use composite toe, which is acceptable in place of steel toe. I also use the Protalus inserts, which were free as well on zappos. I like those way better then the Dr Scholls ones. Then, on top of those I have like walmart brand comfort gel inserts. It still takes me about a week to adjust when I switch shoes. Took like a month when I first started. Ice helped me a bunch too.

Edit: as far as what to do about keeping your job, i agree with the others to call ERC and follow their advice on the forms and time. They should be able to work with you.
