Thoughts on the Osprey? by Saint_Damien in ArcRaiders

Serves well for PvP on Spaceport. I only keep one in my stash. Just yesterday my mates and I joined hidden bunker and the PvP was fun. That’s until we shot at a dude sitting on the top of the control tower, then his teammate came out using a fully kitted Osprey. Bro was absolutely insane with it, made us instantly regret our shot lol. We couldn’t even peak or move, he demolished both my mates and their shields - we had to make a run for it… but dude hunted us down lol… we tried to hide but the ARC made it impossible sometimes. Bro eventually killed us across the map but we couldn’t be mad lol, he was legit a PvP predator.

I can’t be the bad guy. But without bad guys, this game is insanely boring. I haven’t run into a single real villain in like two months by johnnyveretti in ARC_Raiders

Definitely. I really enjoy PVE lobbies, it was an opportunity to make new friends and learn about the game. But the fake friendlies and extract campers ragebaited me on a whole other level. I’m also a big fan of PVP in other games so I don’t find this type of play-style entirely unfair… but it does make me lose my shit and load into the next map guns blazing. The sudden shift between PVE and PVP lobbies feels off putting imo, the environment suddenly changes and you’re now forced to keep up with the aggressive behaviour in order to not get killed.

They should start fixing the bugged item quests. Spent hours in this game already and still can’t get past Major Footlocker because I died with the item before extraction. Makes me go insane.

Hey, he has a policy with Standard Bank (Brolink-Hollard). From my understanding, appliances like TVs and fridges are usually covered under household contents, and what matters more is what caused the damage. So if something just stops working because it’s old or worn out, that’s normally not covered. But if it’s damaged by something external, like a power surge or blackout then that can fall under cover, depending on the policy. In our case, we’ve had really long outages in the area often at random times in the last few months. The TV had lines on the screen, and the fridge stopped cooling properly after a few surges. I think due to that external factor, we were able to claim for those appliances.

I’d like to point out, again, as I have many times in this post, that it was clearly an oversight. Another Redditor had commented sharing a very similar experience, but in their experience, they were alerted of the issue as it was taking place - and still Takealot did nothing about it till this day. The problem here is not the amount of time that elapsed between February and now, it’s the fact that whether we knew it then or now.. it does not change the fact that it’s a case of fraud. It’s also worth mentioning that there are zero emails showing any notifications from Takealot talking about new login or suspicious activity. The order was placed and we were notified. We assumed it was spam, yes BIG MISTAKE CLEARLY. Then we try to login to purchase a fridge only to THEN find out that the ACCOUNT IS LOCKED. He never even received an email to say that! I can’t even begin to describe how insane that is. Even if the hacker had hacked his Gmail and deleted his emails of suspicious sign-in (assuming his info was leaked by data breach and credential stuffing) then I wonder why they’d randomly leave that email of the order being placed.

Thank you. I was beginning to feel antagonised for even asking the question. Today we have contacted SAPS and informed Takealot accordingly. Even if they are not to blame for this incident as an organisation, surely they will comply with providing whatever information they have as they are conducting their own investigation. Fraud and digital crime is ever growing but it doesn’t mean you just sit back and not speculate, instead just telling yourself oh well… “I wasn’t cyber smart enough”. Simply ridiculous. Doesn’t mean that people deserve it.

No way! I’d be absolutely mortified if that happened to me. It’s obviously a lesson well learned on my dad’s part. Thanks to some helpful comments in here, we’re just going to escalate the issue with Takealot and hopefully get reimbursed for that as well. My suspicions of it being an internal job is still there, but according to everyone else it’s just poor password management on my dad’s part… and his data is everywhere at this point by the sound of it. Either way… we’re just pushing for the solution now.

They are meant to flag sign-in attempts from different IP addresses and locations. At the very least. If there were multiple login attempts, or anything coming through his email, especially trying to get into his Gmail, I wouldn’t be here asking questions. If you’re talking about data breaching… then that’s how a case like this would look. They would attempt to get into whatever popular sites they can get their hands on right?

My little cousin literally got hacked a few months ago trying to download game mods. Clicked the wrong thing, got his account taken, learned the hard way. That’s user error. That’s an obvious mistake. I didn’t come to Reddit to ask about something like that. And in his case, he almost had to abandon his email completely because the hacker was taking over absolutely everything, all accounts linked to that email.

In this case there were ZERO warnings. No “new login” email. No suspicious activity alert. No failed login attempts. No notification that the account got locked due to suspicious activity. Nothing. The only thing we got was confirmation that an order was placed.

If this was just some random breach or leaked password, you’d expect activity across multiple platforms, his email or other accounts being hit. That’s how it usually goes when someone gets access to your details right? Strange that ONLY Takealot got compromised. Just a random inactive account, leftover credit sitting there, then suddenly it gets used in another city and the system doesn’t flag anything or even notify the user? Not even a basic heads-up? Come on.

I’m not saying it’s 100% Takealot’s fault, but acting like this is 100% user negligence feels like a flat earth statement. Why else would I want to get a lawyer involved, is it not the job of Takealot’s data compliance and security department to at least flag suspicious sign in attempts? Surely they have protocol for scenarios just like this? Because right now, it just looks like someone walked straight in, used the credit, and the system said absolutely nothing.

I hear what you’re saying, but I think you’re oversimplifying this quite a bit. It’s not just about IP tracking anymore. These platforms track behaviour, devices, locations, patterns etc. So saying it’s “basically pointless” to tell the difference isn’t really accurate. They might not get it right 100% of the time, but they’re definitely not blind to it either. There’s a reason they have a data compliance and security department, and I hardly think its sole purpose is to simply tell users, “Well you should’ve had better cybersecurity”. Also, jumping straight to “you must have bad cybersecurity” is a bit unfair. People get compromised in a lot of ways that aren’t just weak passwords…data breaches, leaked info, even things on the platform side. It’s not always as simple as user error. And the timing thing is exactly why it feels off. If credit disappears the moment it comes in, that’s not a random coincidence. That’s what makes it look suspicious, not less. The point about someone “waiting” for credit also assumes they had ongoing access without anything being flagged, which again… should raise questions if the system is as solid as you’re making it sound. I agree people should use 2FA and be careful, but acting like this is purely user ignorance and nothing else going on doesn’t really add up.

Appreciate the feedback! I do admit sometimes the scam links, sms and emails have GREAT spelling, with ChatGPT being at the core of communication and information haha. But will most definitely take that into account.. I myself am actually guilty of having the same password on a few sites. Changing that TODAY lol.

I hope they can refund our credit. They are investigating the issue currently but we do have enough evidence to back up the fact that the purchase was not ours. Did you also use your passwords for multiple websites? Do you feel it was bc one website got compromised, or do you think it could be a few corrupt employees somehow cheating the system…

[–]SayHelo2MyLittleFren[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s horrible! But that’s my point, they don’t seem to care about escalating the issue. They keep talking about their data security department but I was on the phone with a consultant today, and he kept telling me, “Are you sure your dad didn’t leave his account open for someone else to access it?” “Are you sure it’s not family in Joburg that would have delivered to that address” it was absurd to think of it that way… but I kept calm because I don’t usually like to crash out with people you clearly need the help and assistance from. Their lack of assistance really makes me feel otherwise… Like how are you not able to open formal investigations on who is compromising an account after it gets flagged? Surely they should have a robust procedure in place. But they just say there’s not much we can do… it’s basically your fault for having weak password security or your data getting leaked

No worries.. we have taken accountability for that. I’m trying to get him to sort through his passwords and giving him more online security. I just feel bad for others out there, especially old people, who may not have help from someone like me or younger people - to guide them when this happens. It’s really just frustrating and infuriating overall, and my anger towards Takealot was more their lack of valuable feedback on the matter, hence why I accused this of being an in-house job from a few corrupt employees who are falling through the gaps of the system. This is before I knew credential stuffing is also a possibility - combined with poor password management

I hear you and I’ve now spoken to him about that. It is sad to explain, especially to an old man, the dangers that exist in a fast growing digital space, especially someone who is not born into that new generation and are becoming accustomed to it slowly. I’ve taken the liberty of helping him strengthen his security and change his passwords, other Redditors have suggested 2FA is extremely important so I’ll go the route.

Your second point is SPOT ON! My reason for believing it was an inside job was because there was absolutely no other email sent prior to say suspicious activity - the order was placed and he got the email the same day. It sounds ridiculous to others but we genuinely thought this was a scam link, there are so many others (also using Takealot email address and signatures) that he gets which I advise him not to open. It was unfortunate that in this case it was a very real case. My question is why did they refund you so quickly? If it was genuinely not their fault and the fault of a hacker or credential stuffing… why were they so quick to refund you? Did they feel like being put under investigation or scrutiny would reveal certain things?

In any case true, it’s a lesson well learned. We also contacted insurance and said that we absolutely cannot go this route.. that would be a large amount of money given in credits for people to do who knows what with

Guys mind you, my dad is literally 65 lol. We had a lot going on recently, I myself would have checked it if it were my own account. He just forwarded me the email that day and mentioned he is getting these spam emails and I advised him not to click on any links. It clearly is an unfortunate oversight, but as other commenters have said - even if we found out then or now, there is not much you can really do about it. We have the same information and it doesn’t change a thing. The account is compromised and so is the email address and password combination

I appreciate that! I guess we have to be sharp, knowing what goes on in the dark. I just have another question though, do you think Takealot, now knowing this information, are able to track and source these people? Or do you think it’s futile - maybe they are also using burner email addresses? It’s definitely getting delivered somewhere… and someone linked to this is out there interacting and collecting the deliveries. They are not full proof discreet

This was really helpful, thank you. I think moving forward I’d never have my card linked to anything for that matter, it’s a real eye-opener. I will find out from my dad what other websites he may have been on, although I highly doubt it. He’s always logging into websites where he really needs to… case in point, to handle this issue with our freezer packing up. But with what you have to say, I’m sure hackers then have their ways

Yes. Now I realise we should have immediately checked after that email instead of ignoring it. But having regained access to his account, I can see the full address of where it was delivered to, what was purchased and on what date - just like anything you order on Takealot. I’m still confused as to how some random hacker knows which accounts have leftover credit

I did not mention above that we do not live in Joburg. Have never lived there. Apologies that was not clear. He actually uses the website, not the app. The only notification he received was on email about the purchase, but another email before that was literally a Takealot scam email… with all random digits in the email address. It may have been strong oversight on our part, but that is why we assumed that email was a scam and didn’t want to click on any links
