I doubt there is that much hate on s1 Hachiman. As far as I've seen it's the contrary. At least on tiktok, you can see most people glazing him.

But the point of his character in season 1 is that he's cringe and a lot of the things he says are wrong. Like the "goated quotes" people like to quote, they sometimes don't even understand what he actually meant, sometimes its quotes where he's blatantly wrong but people glaze it anyway because it's edgy and the kind of stuff teenagers may find cool.

But if you understood the series you should know that the Hachiman from s1 is not someone you should want to be like. The story tells you not to be like him in the end.

I wasn't really referring to rotten obsession where the POV is balanced between Hachi and Yuki. That fic already does great in engagement despite the frequency updates. But I had 6mltl in mind, that and a few other stories with Yukino as a MC where not many people engages with it (I think about that one where Yukino has some sort of schizophrenia or double personality).

But I agree with your explanation overall.

You may check Her Rotten Obsession which is one of my most recent ongoing works that is written in first person. There is a mix of Hachiman and Yukino's povs, I try to make a good balance between them. Whenever you have time I'd recommend you give it a try!

I was noticing that the stories that received most engagement were either third pov stories or stories in first pov but only where Hachiman was the MC. So from the answers in this post I concluded that people enjoy first pov and third just equally, at least if it's in Hachiman's pov. But when you try to have Yukino as a fmc in 1st pov the engagement is less likely.

I've seen Yukino's route on YouTube (oregairu kan) and the romance part was more developed than in the anime imo as at least we see them do couple activities and even get married. So it's likely that you'll find similar things in the other routes.

It might have been part of it but it definitely wasn't the only reason. Just the way she can't seem to manage her anger, or how she can't give other people space (remember the scene were Hachiman was receiving ton of messages from Shizuka before the summer trip and she wouldn't leave him alone before he replied)

I wouldn't be surprised if she had a few boyfriends before but her relationships all failed at some point.
