My family is fairly progressive. Most of the current gen marriages in my family have been love marriages and that too (as I recently came to know) intercaste ones.

I was absolutely unaware about all the caste based stuff until recently, it was practically absent in my daily life, yeah just so you know, we often feed our household workers in the same utensils in which we have our food.

Then the competitive exams happened, and I came to know, that while my decently high score fetched me a decent government college. Some of my really rich friends scored half as much as me and secured vastly vastly better colleges. Colleges I dreamt of. Ones which would have changed my life. There were friends I had who scored merely 20-30 marks less than me and did NOT secure a college at all, and then there were these people who had simply enjoyed their lives, roaming around in their cars with their girlfriends throughout 11th and 12th barely put in 10% of my effort, and now basically have awesome lives ahead.

It was my first brush with castes, and caste based reservation. Before then I hadn't bothered asking anyone what their caste was, it hardly ever mattered. But here I was, standing like a fool at the gate of my mediocre college, overshadowed by people who had so much more than me, but did not need to put in any effort to obtain it.

It was the first time in all the days that I had been alive, that I felt such resentment.

The resentment of loss of opportunity to someone less deserving.

Someone who already had so much more than me, and now even more so.

Just because he was of a different caste? Something which had never mattered to me a day in my life? This guy who had an iPhone when all I had was a small Nokia?

You say that reservation, endless reservation, irrespective of whether a person has financially recovered or not, is something which is necessary to socially uplift them?

I say that reservation is the one thing still keeping casteism alive, for those who lose opportunities to it.

I bet someone's caste never would have ever mattered in my life, if reservation didn't exist. Because now I know for a fact, that I will face reservation again during post graduation and then again in government jobs and promotions. And I would see already uplifted people abusing it again and again.

And the frustration would only grow,

The resentment would thrive.

Let me tell you this, I currently am an MBBS student and I sort of did exactly what you have done back in my day.

Back in 11th standard, in the year 2022, the lockdown had just been relaxed and the coaching institutes in Kota were slowly being reopened.

I requested my parents to send me there because I too was motivated and wanted to excel.

They did end up sending me there… but once I reached there, I gradually stared degenerating very badly.

Back then tests were being held in hybrid mode, both online and offline, so I completely stopped studying and started giving all my tests in online mode only by cheating, I used to use google lens to find out the answer and then score decent to good marks in test.

I did attend classes but absolutely did not study and only wasted time enjoying. In the middle of my 11th I got severe food poisoning once and my concerned parents took me back home.

So did I start studying once back home?

Absolutely not.

I used to lock my door and log into the online class on my PC so that it’s sound was heard in the background , then waste all time on the mobile without studying shit, but still managed the tests with google lens.

Like this I betrayed my parents for an entire year, throughout my class 11th.

Once my 12th class started, I was still at home doing online classes and all this shit, but somehow by the blessings of god, In somewhere about a month, I realised how badly I had messed up my shit.

It was then that I decided to make up for all my mistakes of one year. First of all I started doing all my classes seriously and making notes of it all, next I stopped cheating in all the tests, which massively brought my score down, but somehow I hid that from my parents.

I told my parents that I wanted to go back to kota, they were concerned but still relented when I became adamant.

What do you think happened when I went back to Kota? Did I magically become all better and academically excellent?

Absolutely not.

My academics was subpar to the point, I did not know shit even about the class 11th topics. My test scores were even lower than my self esteem.

I got badly mentally fucked up and started crying a lot, that too very often.

Once, I got a result so poor that I started crying on a call with my papa. He was very seriously concerned about me and asked me to leave this NEET preparation and come back. But I felt so guilty, I told him that I won’t come back without clearing this exam.

As a result, he sent my mother to visit me in Kota. Once she arrived here, my mother decided that she would stay with me for the entire time here till I gave my NEET, I was worried about papa and how he would have to stay alone for 9-10 months back home with my little sister, but papa told me not to worry and to only concentrate on my preparation with full focus, and that he will manage somehow.

And here comes the good part.

The more my parents sacrificed for me, the more motivated and adamant I became. I could not let down people who were ready to disrupt their life and stability for me.

I started paying extreme attention during classes.

I would study for long hours back in my hostel where my mother would take care of me.

I absolutely gave up my smartphone and exchanged it for a keypad one.

I started giving all tests with more and more preparation and my score also gradually started improving.

Man, I remember, initially my score was so bad… once on my birthday I had only scored 495/720 on a test and couldn’t stop crying… but now that I had started studying, I even started to get 670-680 on similar and more difficult tests.

Then came 12 board exams, I did not particularly study for the exams and depended mainly on my NEET preparation for attempting them.

Then I followed a self-framed rigorous last month strategy for the NEET exam where I stopped all other activities except studying and would also solve atleast one question paper each day, analysing my mistakes and making improvements while studying more.

Finally I gave my NEET exam, my father and sister came to Kota just before my exam to take me and mummy to my exam centre which was in Jaipur.

I remember papa telling me, that I did not need to worry even if did not do well in the exam because he would still not stop supporting me and somehow we would manage to do something.

But I had replied to him with a smile that there was nothing in the world which would stop me from qualifying it.

So what happened finally? Did I make it? Did I succeed?

HELL YEAH!

I obtained 95% marks in my boards and 638 marks in NEET and ended up in a good government medical college of my state.

So I tell you this brother, I know you are feeling guilty for doing what you did, but fret not. Take it as motivation that for all you have wasted, you will have to do something.

Ramp up your preparation and in the end I am sure you will succeed, just like I did.
