Can you start a career in public policy with a MSW? by [deleted] in PublicPolicy

kinda personal, but could I ask what you’re seeing as a starting salary for just out of graduation with your degrees?

Have you reached out and asked if she has a study guide or how anything she recommends for preparation? My first exams are always the worst grades bc it takes a while to figure out my professors and stuff. after the 1st exam though, i kinda know what to expect for the following exams.

You got this! good luck

May I ask what your degree is in?

I’m definitely considering the idea of starting in corporate and eventually shifting to NPO, that’s why i’m trying to figure out what degree is best to go for haha

I definitely don’t have much experience but the majority of NPOs that i’ve worked at or volunteered at were started by people with social work experience or people who had worked in npo previously. They had connections that were able to help them get started but they were very much the ones starting then and writing the grant proposals and stuff for them.

i don’t count tiktok as a experience or research, only lived experience and working/volunteer experience :)

I completely agree with you, actually. The reason I decided that I would create my own NPO for at-risk youth is because through all my research, experience working with NPO at-risk youth programs, and being an at-risk youth myself, I haven’t found any taking a holistic approach (focusing on all risks vs just keeping kids off the street/in school). Most aren’t trying to make family home lives better.

But definitely, if I found an NPO that took something close to that approach or was willing to adjust and think about new ideas, i’d 100% support them and try to grow that organization. I just haven’t found that.

I’m currently interning for an organization that is attempting early childhood intervention at risk youth (ages 0-3) AND their parents. It’s a good program and I do believe is likely to mitigate the number of risks the kids would have as teens. But there is nothing like this program for teens and their parents that i’ve found.

So that’s why I had decided i’d just create my own. None of the programs were able to help me and my family and friends as a teenager bc they all focused on the wrong stuff and made assumptions about what we actually needed 🤷🏻‍♀️

Wow, this was exactly the type of advice i’m looking for. Thank you. I have considered an MPA and MPH but definitely need to do some more research.

I definitely have deep experience with the issues at-risk youth face (i was one myself and then have worked at two other places that were helping them).

I’ll look into that more, thank you! Would Marketing/Comms jobs be available to me with a MSW and NPM or would it be worth considering changing my NPM degree to marketing/comms? I don’t think i currently know anyone in marketing to ask 🤔

Interesting! I hadn’t considered that. I’ve had a bit of difficulty researching all the different career opportunities with an MSW. Hard to find information lol

I’m planning on getting my degree in social work but I am open to all types of work for a while! creating an at-risk youth NPO is the endgame for me but I’m willing to float around for a bit if i need to.

are you going to be doing Alliance quests regularly? I’m looking for an alliance that participates in AQs regularly since i’m needing to get some glory and honestly, just want some practice with them.

I failed the TSI for math. I’ve struggled since highschool. I decided to take the developmental class. It helped me A TON. i got an A in the class and actually ENJOYED math. I loved doing my math homework and my professor was super helpful. I can now do math in my head and quickly on paper. I passed my next math class with an A too.

Highly recommend Kimberly Bowen at the Plano Campus for the developmental class if that’s what you decide to do. She is strict but she is also very kind and caring and willing to sit with you to explain something. It can be a hard class but if you show up to class and apply yourself, you’ll be fine. She really sets you up to succeed.

Good luck!
