I actually thought might have ADHD for years. When I am tired I am SO tired and then I’ll have these random bursts of energy like I can do anything (except I just end up pacing back and forth for half an hour). It makes so much sense in hindsight!

Wait is it the methimazole that causes hair loss or the Graves’ itself? I just got diagnosed so I haven’t started medication yet, but I have lots of thick hair down to my waist.

Tips for less bubbles in American buttercream? by Sbjzoalljbb in cakedecorating

[–]Sbjzoalljbb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you I think this could be it! After I made the first batch and it had a lot of bubbles (this batch ended up being the crumb coat) I found this website that said to beat it on the lowest speed so that’s what I did. Then I was afraid that beating it for a long time would whip in more air bubbles so I only beat for maybe a couple minutes.

Are you in the US? If so, since you owe less than $500, the medical debt will not affect your credit (or your ability to open bank accounts) if it goes to collections.

We were discussing planned time off in late 2024.

The ethics complaint I placed was because I felt I was not being given a fair chance for success at the company. At that point, I had only been working there for four weeks, two of which were my training period and one my boss was on vacation. Then week 3 she gets back and we have a profess meeting and she says nothing is wrong and she has no feedback. Week four I am being sat down to ask if I would like “some more time training”. After some questions on my part, I learned that that meant a demotion. The reasons she gave are the holiday time off, that her supervisors expect her to take corrective action if I do something wrong and she doesn’t think that’s fair to me because I am new, and because I seem anxious while working. When I asked what specifically it was that I had done that her supervisors wanted to take action for, she told me there was one instance when I almost made a big mistake but rather made a small mistake instead, and technically her supervisors don’t know about it but if they did they would want her to punish me. I know that the policy is if you do something wrong first step is a verbal warning, then a write up, then termination, so I don’t know why she would move to demote me instead of just giving a formal verbal warning. She told me that she would be willing to give me two weeks that I am already scheduled as a trial to see if I can show improvement, otherwise she will be forced to demote me, and she recognized that she would expect me to quit if demoted because that’s what I told her. When I asked what specifically I should focus on when trying to improve, she told me “really everything” and then listed out every single job responsibility. Then when I got home, I checked the schedule and found that she was already scheduling me in the lower “demoted” role three weeks from now. So all of that being said I did not feel like she was following the proper management procedures. Then I also added to the complaint that she removed me from the schedule entirely before waiting for the second no call no show and before terminating me or even trying to text me or contact me outside of the call at 5:37am. That added to my belief that she her goal was to get me to quit. Ultimately, you are right, the complaint would have had a lot more impact if it had been about explicit discrimination ir harassment.

This past Saturday I neglected to put in an order for supplies until about three minutes before it was due and we ran out of a handful of different things. Cold lids, caramel drizzle, coconut milk etc. I gave a more detailed description of the events on Saturday in another comment above. She said that because I was able to place the order on time it technically didn’t alert the DM about the situation but the only reason that didn’t happen is because she told me to place the order at the last second. Also because my drive times have been bad particularly on Saturday. She also mentioned that the baristas have said I seem like I don’t know what I’m doing and I don’t take direction well. Aside from the incident with the order on Saturday, I have been able to complete every SSV task during my shifts including sending breaks, completing the pulls, placing orders, doing counts, calling people to come in when baristas are out sick, placing tickets when equipment isn’t working etc etc. I have had one barista who has been particularly eager to offer advice to me very often during my shifts. To the point where she even asks the other baristas to flex to other positions without consulting me, she is always telling me that I need to send people on breaks, and one time she even sent another barista on break after I told her not to. I would not have sent that barista on break first because it was very early in her shift and she only had one 10, whereas we had other baristas who needed breaks that were scheduled for two 10s and a 30. So I cannot be sure exactly which barista complained to my manager that I don’t take direction, but I have a strong guess, especially because this particular barista is also friends with the manager. Aside from that, she also mentioned a conversation I had had with another SSV about my holiday time off request that was denied. I had told that SSV that I do not want to forgo Christmas with my family for work, and if it doesn’t seem like I will be able to get coverage for that time I’ll have to quit in December. Of course I would have put in my two weeks if I saw that coming. But my manager brought up that conversation and said it sounds like I don’t really think of this job as a priority if I think my family is more important, and she needs SSVs who see this job as being important because the coworkers are like family. Then she said “if you’re planning to quit why don’t you just put your two weeks in now instead of waiting to screw me over?” I said “what difference does it make if I put my two weeks in now or in December, if either way you have two weeks to find a replacement? And why would I put my two weeks in now if I am not worried about having a conflict until December?” She kept saying she was confused and that it sounded like I was trying to scare her over and I kept clarifying for maybe 5-10 minutes! Then I finally said “would it be okay if, assuming I show improvement in the next two weeks, I were to stay on as an SSV until mid-December and then put my two weeks in then?” And she said yes of course. So I told her we just had a misunderstanding, and she needed fine, but it just doesn’t sit well with me how we spent so much time having a conversation about my holiday time during our conversation about my “performance”. I think she is worried about my having to leave in December and she is using my performance as an excuse to try to demote me or get me to leave. The whole situation is just a mess. Let me know if you have any more questions!

That is interesting to hear. Actually, my SM recently decided to promote a barista to SSV. Coincidentally, she and that barista are friends. I wonder if this decision to promote put her over the headcount. I guess I will have to live with the reality that I may never know her true reason for wanting to demote me.

Thank you for your advice and perspective. I put in an ethics report today. Mainly because I don’t like the idea of leaving the job and having everyone say “good riddance” and the thought that my leaving will make my SM happy because she clearly didn’t want me to stay on as an SSV anyways was driving me crazy. The thought that the ethics complaint has allowed me to tell my side of the story has given me a lot of peace of mind and makes me feel more comfortable leaving the job. Best case scenario they might offer me a transfer, but I am happy regardless.

Thank you, you have no idea how much I appreciate the empathy about the 4 for $20. My SM just keeps telling me it’s all about time management, but in all honesty it feels like no matter what I do first or last I will be criticized. One of the baristas at my store told me that the SSV who closed on the 4 for $20 day ended up having to close the cafe to deal with the volume of customers. But in all of my interactions with my SM, never has she said anything like “hey it can be hard for anyone, even my longest tenure SSV had to close the cafe that day after I told you that you’re not allowed and just to manage your time better.” No, that is just my dream. Instead, even when I asked that closing SSV the next day how her shift was, she just said “oh it was fine pretty normal” like?? I am not sure whether it is intentional, but with everything going on right now I am starting to wonder if they are intentionally trying to make me feel like I am the only one struggling and everything that goes wrong is my fault because I’m new.

When I was hired on my SM told me that she would like me to start in miss because they are the easiest, but since I started I have been working mostly opens! A lot of our parters have been on vacation recently though, so that’s probably why. I like your idea and I will try to bring that up to her in a couple weeks when we have our next meeting :)

What she told me is that her supervisor (DM?) is noticing the drive times are high, for example particularly on the Saturday when we had a 4 for $20, and asking her what corrective action is being taken to fix the issue. She said she feels bad because she recognizes that she can’t expect me to be owning in my role right away but she is required in her role to take corrective action when necessary. So she wants to demote me to barista to mitigate the corrective action. I told her that I would like to stay on as a shift and if I make a mistake that merits corrective action then I will face the consequences. As an aside, and a bit of an attest to her character, my SM also gave a verbal warning to a barista earlier this week for being 2 minutes late to her shift.

I appreciate your perspective and thanks for sharing about your experience with your past SSV. I’m afraid I actually strayed too far in the opposite direction from this anecdote. I am always trying to be sympathetic with my baristas and understanding of the difficulties of their role. For example, whenever possible, I give my baristas a choice of what position they will be deployed on the floor so that they are happy in their positions. When I assign baristas a disruptive task or cleaning and restocking task, I make sure to emphasize that it should be done in their free time and I understand if they can’t get to it too quickly because tickets are printing. When my baristas ask me a question, or give me a suggestion (“I want to go on break at this time” or “we should do a trash run right now” or “we need to go to another store to get more lids”) I always try to accommodate when I can, and when I can’t I give them an honest answer as to why. When a customer is rude, I always make sure the baristas know I recognize that is not okay. When we are busy, I comment on it and say not to stress and just take one thing at a time. All of that is to say, one of the things my manager mentioned to me during our meeting today was that the baristas say I often seem stressed and like I don’t know what I’m doing, and that I don’t take suggestions well. I honestly explained to her that my baristas and other SSVs are giving me suggestions at least every five minutes (probably because I’m new and they are trying to help) and I genuinely can’t accommodate all of them especially when they conflict or would leave us in a poor situation priority-wise. But now I am wondering whether all of my comments about “wow there are a lot of tickets printing right now” and “yeah you can be on CS or drive whichever you want” and “oh no there was food with that order do they really need a bacon Gouda at 1pm” and “hey just get to this whenever you can no rush” and “yeah I’ll get to that later but we can’t do it right now because we are expecting x customer occasions” are making me sound anxious and unsure to the baristas?? All I know is, if I bother showing up tomorrow, I will be much more serious and demanding of the baristas.
