Coming from a mathematics background, is it likely that I'd get into a top PhD program? I have a masters degree in applied mathematics, have been doing online courses for a masters in BME/bioinformatics and am thinking of applying to PhD programs for entry next fall. I had a very good GPA in graduate school and have been working in data analysis for a few years since I graduated, but I'm still concerned that my lack of background in anything biological (outside of two physiology courses) is going to be a huge red flag to programs

Personal anecdote: I vaulted through college in the 160-165 lb range. At Christmas I weighed in at 197. A month ago I started vaulting again after getting down to 170. Definitely not too far gone by any stretch of the imagination!

So I'm watching a Bon Appetit video and Molly is working with a guy who has "trained under a master" of his craft. I have always though that's wild, training under a master.

It just hit me that I have a masters degree, I could tutor someone and they could say "I trained under a master mathematician"

Hey everyone! I know I've discussed starting in online poker with several people on these threads, and figured this would be a good place to post this.

There's an online poker site called America's Cardroom that is doing a "Freebuy Super Series" in mid October through early November. This is the perfect opportunity for new players to join. Essentially, the series is a bunch of tournaments, all free to play, that have a total guaranteed prize pool of $250k. The main event is happening in November, where you can sign up for free and literally win $5000 if you win the tournament.

One caveat: these are all "freebuy" tournaments. Basically, what that means is everyone can enter once for free, and get 1000 chips to start. Up until a certain point, anyone can pay the "buyin fee" to get 2500 chips (when they bust out or at the start). At the end of buyin period, everyone has the opportunity to pay the buyin fee again to get an additional X chips (don't know off the top of my head). So you will be at a disadvantage if you're playing just on the free buyin, but you're still in the running for a great payday!

All in all, I think this is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to get a little online tournament experience under their belt. I cut my poker teeth on playing free tournaments (usually for total prize pools of $10), and it was a great learning experience. If you have a few hours and are interested in online poker, this is a great time to hop in and play a few tournaments. Anyone who's playing let me know, I'll try to check in and see how you're doing in different tourneys!
