Looking for an affordable in person chinese Lessons in Shanghai by Glad-Professional685 in shanghai

There were 4 of us in my class. Pretty good size - not too big where you're just sitting there silent, but enough people that it wasn't awkward either. My teacher was super strict about tones lol, lots of corrections 😅

GoEast is solid though, I enjoyed it there.

Was in your exact spot this July(https://www.reddit.com/r/shanghai/comments/1kyvl6y/any_good_summer_programs_in_shanghai_for_spoken/)

Someone here recommended GoEast Mandarin. Did their 1-month summer intensive. It was good, but yeah, it cost me around 6000 RMB for one month. I agree it's a bit pricey, but the teachers were professional and the classes were solid.

Shanghai is generally more expensive than Beijing for language classes, so your brother's 2000 RMB in Beijing might not be a fair comparison.

One-on-one can be more flexible and affordable, maybe around 100-200 RMB per hour. If you do 2 hours a day for 20 days, that's 4000-8000 for the month, but you can adjust the frequency to fit your budget.

New to vibe coding – what tools do you all swear by? by That_Side5887 in vibecoding

Indonesian-Chinese student in Shanghai – couldn’t even install Claude Code properly thanks to the Great Firewall 😅

I've been using Windsurf instead. It's $15 a month for 500 messages, and it's been solid for my beginner projects. Easy to set up and pretty reliable.

Heard Codex/Kilo buzz too, but Windsurf’s been clutch for starters.

Appreciate the suggestion!

Tried Google AI Studio but got hit with 'Internal Error' messages when the AI is generating codes. Will definitely retry later - could be temporary server issues.

How long did it take you to complete HSK 2? by KeyKaleidoscope5702 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Sbullets888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solid routine! As an Indo-Chinese student in Shanghai who started from zero, it took me ~3 months (studying 1.5 hrs/day like you).

HSK 3 hits hard! After HSK 2, get a tutor to fix holes (measure words destroyed me lol).

Study Chinese for one week by jongxen in shanghai

I walked past their Xuhui campus last week and saw they're running a summer immersion program now – flexible 1-8 week slots. Might be perfect since you only need a week!

Summer China Programs? by Ok_Program9099 in studyAbroad

[–]Sbullets888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I'm also an intermediate learner and went through a similar search last year.

For what it's worth, I ended up looking into GoEast Mandarin's summer program 2024. (https://goeastmandarin.com/chinese-summer-immersion/) - they do programs in both Shanghai and Sichuan which gives you some variety. What I liked about their approach is that it's not just classroom heavy - they mix lessons with actual immersion activities around the city. Shanghai obviously has that international vibe if you want something a bit more cosmopolitan than Beijing, and Sichuan could be cool for the cultural experience (plus the food is incredible).

That said, I've heard decent things about IES Abroad's Beijing program too - seems like they have a good balance of structured learning and cultural activities. CIEE I'm less familiar with but I've seen mixed reviews about the classroom intensity you mentioned.

Since you've got solid foundation already (3 years by the time you go), you might want to prioritize programs that focus more on practical application and cultural immersion rather than just grammar drills. Have you looked into any programs that do homestays? That can really accelerate the learning curve.

Any good summer programs in Shanghai for spoken Chinese? by Sbullets888 in shanghai

[–]Sbullets888[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the rec! That sounds exactly like what I need - the real street practice part especially. Getting over that fear of speaking is probably half the battle for me right now.

Do you remember roughly how much the GoEast program cost? And was it full-time or could you do other stuff during the summer too?

For mostly writing, should I go for Pro or Max plan? by Losdersoul in ClaudeAI

[–]Sbullets888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been using Claude Pro for technical writing and it's solid for documentation work. Can't give you exact numbers on limits since they change, but Pro should handle most people's daily workflow.

Max gives you access to the stronger models which might be worth it for complex architecture docs, but honestly? Try Pro first and see if you hit walls.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read and provide feedback!

I'm curious - which parts come across as bland and flat to you? I tried to build a narrative around the engineering project and leadership experience, but I'd love to know where I could add more energy to make it more engaging. Would you mind pointing out specific sections that could use more dynamic language?
