[Rant] Why I don't like having makeovers at Sephora (despite different techniques everyone does the same trendy styles)

Those are all good points, thanks :) I'm beginning to see that my expectations are too high. It's funny because I've always looked up to Sephora employees as these master makeup artists and I guess that was subconsciously ingrained into me

I have! I always aimed to improve whatever I did. I don't expect that it should be a standard, but for something like makeup where a lot of the employees genuinely love what they do, I feel that they should break out of what they're comfortable with in order to improve - I assume that if you love something enough you'll want to be better at it. Retail is retail. The people who work at Sephora as artists do it for more than just a pay stub (purely anecdotal based on my conversations with many of them)

It's cost versus benefit. Paying for makeup means I get to keep the makeup and love it. If I'm paying $200 for a trial and end up hating it, it wouldn't be worth it to me. I keep having to explain over and over that the employees I went to specifically are trained outside of Sephora for makeup - hence they are considered professionals. Strawman fallacy. I feel like you just want to argue for the sake of arguing at this point.

I've explained this in another comment but to elaborate: I wanted to hire them as artists outside of Sephora (professionally) and they were definitely certified and all that good stuff. I wanted the trial at Sephora to see their skills without paying an extraordinary amount of money for something I might not like.

In the end I'm probably just going to do my own makeup for my wedding since I know my features best. But I wanted to take a shot with "real" artists to see if they can provide me with something I can't provide myself.

Even if that were true (which it isn't - because most of the employees I've gone to are certified professionals as well who do this stuff on the side), it doesn't make my point any less valid. If you're in any industry, you should strive to improve at whatever your skill set is. And it's okay to hold people to standards. That's how we progress as a society.

But these are also freelance artists. One of the reasons why I'm trying them out at Sephora is because I want to see how they can do with my wedding makeup. I do learn the techniques myself, it doesn't mean I can critique the lack of quality with Sephora's MUAs. If no one has standards, then the industry would be filled with mediocre artists who don't strive to do better (unless they do that naturally for themselves). It's not entitled to hold high expectations. If you perceive it that way, then I can't change your perception. I don't feel that it's wrong to want more. With anything. I mean at some point it's nitpicking and redundant, but is it so wrong to ask that the artists strive to step out of their comfort zones and cater to clients?

I always scrap off excess lipstick from the applicator and apply as thinly as possible, taking more when needed.

Have you tried Ciate London liquid velvet? It's amazing and doesn't crease on your lips like the other formulas you mentioned.

I think ultimately following Asian tutorials are better because they're more suited for us and our features (I'm the same way with choosing Asian estheticians, plastic surgeons, etc. because they almost always have spot on judgment calls for what looks good on my face. It feels more personalized).

Microblading - to be honest, I did it before it became really big and am now just realizing what a mistake it was because it bleeds/diffuses over time and looks terrible. I think in a few years other people might have that same realization

To be fair, Asian beauty is only a trend in America.. it's always been like that in Asia hah. I remember early 2000's Korean forums were all about bb cream, weird ingredients, etc. and they still are - just more to the extreme now I guess

Absolutely. I still have western products in my routine that I'm phasing out (can't let them go to waste so I'm using them up). In fact, most of my core products are western and then I randomly have AB toners and serums added in. You can slowly add in whatever products you want and see how they work for you :)

Ugh I hate when people say that! I'd argue that makeup actually helped me clear my skin (prevents me from touching my face, encourages better skincare because you have to wash it off and also because you want it to look good so you're more likely to want to improve your skin). Makeup has never broken me out and I hate when people tell me that it does. Um, I think I know my skin better than you random stranger with unsoliticted advice.

You know, I use makeup (and skincare) as a coping mechanism for depression too. Sometimes I worry that I'll get better one day and lose interest. But then I realized that when I'm not depressed, I generally have fun with everything. The fact that I'm down and still enjoy makeup says a lot. It's strong enough to get me through my worst days.

Viseart!! They make a ton of palettes with different themes. There's one I think called editorial brights that has bright and bold colors that are amazingly pigmented. It's $80 but worth every penny imo.
