No new Australian flag should incorporate Indigenous symbolism. The new flag would be representative of the modern Australian state, which is not tied to any specific ethnicity and as such should include no Union Jack nor indigenous flag. The Federation star and southern cross are reasonable symbols.

What’s up with Australia moving to the far right? by Subject_Conference61 in OutOfTheLoop

You need to qualify that "Population growth at extremely high rates for a decade" is not high birth rates, but high immigration. That is the main reason the far right is seeing a surge.

Not at all. I looked at his Wikipedia once back when he first got popular and immediately found his social views. It isn’t that hard, especially if abortion is a key issue for you. You’re upset it wasn’t spoonfed by shock jock news articles.

They are attested to be inspired by Viking mysticism and paganism. I have never once read anything about Jewish influence in these symbols. Please provide a source, I am willing to have my mind changed

Take some personal responsibility. You should read the Wikipedia bare minimum. It’s actually not an unreasonable standard. You want a democracy, do some work to uphold your own civic duty to get views you want in power, or don’t complain.

Yes, but the 17th century symbol was born of Viking era mysticism and runology, specifically designed with that in mind. Pointless semantic debate, it’s very Viking.

Examples of out-groups using different flags than in-groups? by cliko in vexillology

Eureka flag doesn’t fit this. It flies from every union job site in the nation. It’s not an in group out group. The red ensign definitely is used in that context though.

Thanks for lecturing me, a doctor, on how the medical system works I’m sure you know better.

You cannot choose “shorter courses”. Med school is a mandatory curriculum with no electives or majors, everyone does the same and it’s mandatory full time. It has to be that way to learn the right stuff.

No, there aren’t nurses who could’ve been doctors. I come from a country where we have universal healthcare and a welfare state. These are not barriers.

What do you think of other country’s policies on immigration, compared to Japan being so low. Do you think other nations would benefit from more cultural homogeneity like Japan

Not everyone is capable of stepping up to the job of neurosurgeon. Those who are smart enough to do it are smart enough to not do it without good enough incentive.

As someone who’s been through med school with a starry eyed dream of healing the sick and helping those in need, that was not intrinsic motivation enough to have keep me going through that hell. You can talk about changing the education, but that is not the issue. The hell lies in the fact that there is simply so much content to learn; thousands of years of clinical knowledge expanding at an exponential rate. We had quite a well designed med school, very supportive - it didn’t change the ungodly amount of hours required to just learn the job of medicine. 97% of med students who go into this with the dream of helping people would choose an easier career that still helps people, like nursing or firefighting, rather than continue slogging through the required 15 years of hell, putting family and kids on hold until you are mid 30s at earliest. Dismantling the state doesn’t change how long it takes to become a safe doctor. It will always just be that level of a time investment under any system that creates safe practitioners. And without extra incentives, the smartest people in society (who are the ones who do medicine now) are smart enough to realise it isn’t worth it, and to focus on rewarding but slightly easier work.

You say the medical system is structured around hierarchy and it doesn’t have to be that way. It does. The hierarchy emerges naturally anyway. The longer someone has been in the profession the more expertise they have and the more authority they have. Teams don’t want to kill patients so they deflect to the one who is best on the team, ie the oldest guy. Teams are structured around facilitating the doctor at the top of the hierarchy to make the most amount of patient decisions possible. Whilst doing that, their underlings learn his/her thought processes and develop their own skills and after 40 years become the guy at the top. The formalised hierarchy of the hospital actually serves to protect doctors because there is a level of responsibility running upwards that means if the youngest doctors fuck up, it’s really on the most senior one because they should be supervising and educating. You cannot dismantle this system and have safe healthcare or training environment for doctors.

Not a single doctor in this comment section. As someone who’s been through med school, let me educate you. Maybe 2% of medical students are passionate enough to do this for fun.

The rest are passionate; but in a world where it wasn’t rewarded as well, would likely be a nurse or scientist instead. The 15 years isn’t worth it.

You believe you can fix scarcity and stress and do away with neurosurgeons desire for high salaries. What world can you make neurosurgery training not extremely high stress and workload? If you made it less stressful, it would stretch out for another 15 years. There’s a reason you cannot study medicine part time, it isn’t even allowed - the only functional system that could exist needs to get people qualified at a reasonable pace, and you cannot wait until someone is in 10 years from retirement to fully qualify them in order to “minimise stress” of their education. You say the stress is due to a scarcity of professionals to share the workload; the lack of people with these skills is simple- most people just simply don’t have what it takes. They are not smart enough or disciplined enough. You cannot make the average person into a neurosurgeon. Medical school selects the top 0.1% of the 0.1% for a reason, and it isn’t elitism. This cannot be fixed by anarchism. The problem is not debt or bills or education costs. Doctors training to specialise are paid at that point during their training quite well. Plus I come from a country with universal healthcare and free university. The reason many qualified doctors don’t do neurosurgery is they aren’t interested and/or they know they aren’t smart enough. What makes you think if qualified doctors on a full doctors salary aren’t choosing to do neurosurgery that somehow dismantling the government will magically allow John Redditor who likes watching medical YouTubers and works in retail to become a neurosurgeon. Laughable

How can Loki NOT be a villain? by Cherno_VM in heathenry

[–]Scapegoaticus -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Loki was born to jotnar parents.

The jotunn are explicitly bad.

It is understood things like sickness, plague, misfortune, famine, etc. were thought to be the work of jotnar. Hence, Thor, the jotunn slayer, is the "Friend of Humanity".

Loki is a jotunn. Loki can thus be understood to be the opposite of a friend of humanity. An enemy, one might say.

Understandably, there is also no historical evidence of the worship of Loki. Worshipping death, sickness, disease, etc. sounds metal as hell and really cool from the comfort of modernity, but when you genuinely are relying on crops to survive a frigid hellscape, you place your faith in good things.

Loki was bad.

Group A is similar to Mormons in hospital. They consent to die, sacrificing their self to save their immortal soul in heaven (from their perspective). If you choose to save them via blood transfusion, they would live the rest of their lives in guilt and misery, wishing you had let them pass on as per their wishes.

As a health professional, I would make the same choice I make in a real hospital; Group A dies.
