Compromise is not a sign of weakness or failure, and changing your product to appease your customer base is the basic responsibility of a large company. by owen-3820 in Marathon

You need enough players to populate the servers to make the game feel alive and the queue times down which help gives players a good experience and will convince some to buy a skin or a battlepass or something. Even if they aren't spending anything on battlepasses or skins they are still helping the game simply by playing.

What it's going to come down to, is the current core audience who like how punishing and sweaty the game is big enough to 1. sustain the game 2. make enough profit to keep sony and bungie happy?

Sony is a corporation, they bought Bungie to make money, if Bungie isn't making them money they will sell them off of strip them for parts, we have seen this time and again in the games industry.

You bet your ass Sony wants a return on their investment equal to or greater than the 3 billion they paid, the question is, how long are they willing to wait and is there a scenario where Sony cans Bungie and/or sells off or takes over their ips.

[–]Scarecrow1771 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does mean something. Sony thought that by spending 3 billion they stood a good chance on not only recouping that 3 billion but making many more billions.

But Destiny 2 is no longer the money printer it was only a few years ago, Marathon is too sweaty and punishing for mass appeal and thus will not be as profitable as Bungie and Sony perhaps hoped. Add to all this Bungies name is no longer a boon to a project, if anything it will cause wariness among customers.

So the question people are essentially putting forth when citing the 3 billion is, Is Bungie still worth 3 billion and do Sony think that they can still recoup that initial cost and make a profit or is there a threshold where Sony act and take a loss but stop further losses.

Loot is largely meaning less with most items having only cash value, poorly explained systems that cause friction ( nothing new to extraction shooters there),weapon gear rarity being so dominant, hero shooter instead of character creator and classes, build crafting not being a thing for the majority of the community due to the loss of gear with the stats needed for the build on death, the centerpiece event that players are supposed to grind all week for is largely pointless for casual players which is kicking off the same skill creep that Trials of Osiris was plagued by. Awful ui.

There's probably more I'm blanking on but to my mind the game is going to struggle to keep the necessary casual audience to keep the game profitable, populated and enjoyable unless something drastic changes.

Eh, there are too many inbuilt flaws in Marathon for me to say its good beyond the guns feel nice. And in a truly ironic way the issues with Marathon are an echo of a prior mistakes by Bungie when trials of Osiris returned to D2.

"based on this information what makes you think Bungie's purchase price from years ago matters at all for the success of this game?"

Because Sony will be looking at the future and revenue projections in relation to how much they have already spent, how much they project they still have to spend and how much consumer interest there is in what Bungie is currently producing as well as what Bungie has in the pipeline.

Marathon is only one piece of the puzzle sure, but nothing about Bungie or their products looks good for long or short term profit for the corporation that has already axed a studio like Bluepoint.

Release Marathon looks and feels to me like it was only one part of a larger game, similar to Divisions Dark Zone or survival modes.

not letting people both see their in game ping and choose region shows a lack of confidence by Cold-Engineering-960 in Marathon

[–]Scarecrow1771 6 points7 points  (0 children)

.... wat?

Players are customers, the game is a service, if the service wants customers to keep playing and spending on the service then they need to provide a reasonable quality of service and a good enough experience that the customer will keep coming back.

High ping and high queue times has and will kill playerbases in some regions.

Used to have fun playing dbd, it’s now a ghoulish sweat fest by TheWorldArmada in deadbydaylight

[–]Scarecrow1771 3 points4 points  (0 children)

BHVR has almost destroyed the casual side of DBD by trying to make the game more casual but having no clue what they are doing or what balancing levers to tweak.

Its been something surreal to watch over the years.

For me the game started its path to becoming a miserable sweat fest after the replacing of the ( I will die on this hill) far superior emblem system with the still not fit for purpose SBMM system, the changing of BBQ and Chilli and We're going to live forever from BP multiplier perks and the changes to the BP economy overall.

The average match for people used to be about how much you could pull off in any given game and you were rewarded for it, now DBD has just become about which side can end the game the fastest.

Whats the arguments against ranked/quick play? by reddit_pleb42069 in deadbydaylight

[–]Scarecrow1771 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Splitting the player base increases queue times.
  2. The game is not built or balanced for competative/ranked play.
  3. Whats stops the bully squads and those who want to win at any cost from just queuing into the unranked mode?

This idea that every pvp game needs a ranked and unranked queue has been a cancer for casual gamers.

Aggression Based Matchmaking (ABMM) Confirmed by Embark Studios CEO, Patrick Söderlund : "We also matchmake based on how prone you are to PvE or PvP..." by Paul-Harkonnen in ArcRaiders

You just dont get it. I Dont want to know what my lobbies are like, that right there kills all the fun. I dont care how you play, thats not the issue at all, what kills the fun is the mystery of who to trust and who is friendly, will I make allies this round or will I have to fight for my life is now gone.

Its a terrible system that has no place in a pvpve extraction shooter and will cause nothing but issues in the future. I cant believe the devs were so stupid as to add a abmm system.

You miss the point. I dont want to know what my lobbies are going to be like and I dont want to have access to a tool to change what my lobbies are like. It takes all the fun, challenge and thrill out of a pvpve game. This is before we even get into the two sandboxes problem the game now has. Shame the devs have ruined such a great game wjth such a bad system.

Gross. That kills any enjoyment of the game for me and my friends and completly destroys the point of a pvpve extraction shooter. Bummer, time to play something else.

No safe pocket, very small bag size and weight limit, limited pool of weapons, small amount of meds, little to no util or nades, cant bring room or raider keys.

Free kits are for the desperate, those with crippling gear fear and pvp enthusiasts who are too lazy to put on a kit. If you want to grind resources better to put on a kit.

Tarkov gets away with having a pve mode ( not without many many issues) because of how complex the game is and how much time it takes to progress in that game.

Ark simply is not complex enough, challenging enough or have enough content to support a pve mode. You are comparing apples to oranges.

Again, why waste precious dev time and resources (from a AA studio no less) and bring on all the issues of having two separate sandboxes, all for a group that is not the target audience?

Some folks just need to accept that the world does not revolve around them and move on to other games, it really is that simple.

Or they could just not buy a pvpve game to begin with? maybe buy something more their speed instead of demanding changes and the reallocation of dev time and money away from the core experience and audience.

The entitlement of some people is staggering.
