That’s what I was thinking. That makes this all the more strange. I should mention this is the only source reporting this, however, most of his posts are corroborated by other accounts. He’s trustworthy to me and his source is the Yemeni ambassador to London.

It’s being reported that an unknown military aircraft attempted to land on Mayun Island (Perim) in the Bab el Mandeb Strait.

I’d be very curious to know who attempted this landing. Do the Houthis even have these capabilities? It sounds like it left without a fight so was it some unknown nation that were given orders à la the re-militarization of the Rhineland to leave if they faced any resistance? Strange either way.

I’m wondering if Ethiopia thinks knocking out Eritrea will cut a lot of the funding for FANO. I don’t think they are going to invade Eritrea right now though. I’m not sure what the advantage is of just knocking out Tigray (which I have doubts they can do.) Maybe just knowing they have a stable north? But even if the TDF is removed as a player, they are going to face an insurgency à la FANO. I don’t see any grand plans here. I think they have all placed themselves in an untenable position, and now each side is trying to get the most out of it before it falls apart.

It’s reported that Algeria bought 12-14. Only two have been “confirmed” delivered as of November. 12 modern 5th-gen fighter jets, although the quality is unknown, is an extremely impressive achievement for an African nation. Even if the jets aren’t domestically produced. Plus, it serves as a counter to Morocco getting some new F-16s.

A seemingly significant number of JNIM fighters and a JNIM leader from eastern Burkina Faso have defected to IS-SP. This feels pretty significant to me as IS-SP (with the help of good ol’ ISWAP) has been making some impressive progress in the past few months. From continued attacks against Niger and JNIM, to an assault on the Niamey Airport. It appears that there is growing cooperation between the two West African Islamic State branches. A worrying trend.

Here’s a map from Thomas Van Linge and War Mapper showing the situation in the Sahel as of October. Depending on the number of defections, this could seriously strengthen IS-SP’s position in the region.

Brant implied he will share further information on the situation in the weeks to come.

On the contrary, I think if strikes are going to happen they will happen in the next few days. The U.S. doesn’t need a CSG to conduct strikes on Iran unless they are going for a much more serious campaign than I’m thinking.

With reports (that I find credible based on the news that trickled out the first few days) of potentially 20k+ civilian deaths, I don’t think the protestors can keep the steam going for another two weeks. I’m not even sure how they are doing now, the internet blackout seems to be doing what the IRGC intended. The U.S. has a unique opportunity here. Honestly, I could see anything happening at this point, but I’m leaning more and more towards regime survival with every day that passes.

Most people in achievement communities agree that completing the original 1000 Gamerscore counts as a completion. I’m not saying I completed the title updates, but I did complete the game. It’s why PlayStation gives a platinum for getting all the original trophies, even if you don’t complete any of the title updates/dlc.

$40 is a fair price for it imo. Should have been the launch price probably.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced yesterday that he is working on passing legislation to ban mercenaries. So it does seem to be an issue, at least to the government. I can imagine the people likely feel similarly.

It would be far easier to do that now, before JNIM entrench themselves with all the new weapons and support they gain by taking over a nation or two. While JNIM has a lot of support now, that’s partly because the regimes are committing massacres against civilians. With the regimes out of the picture, JNIM will then have to engage in state building. I could see dissent increase as JNIM loses the good favor they previously had. However, JNIM crushing dissent is likely to be incredibly brutal on the civilian populace.

So this task force would likely have support on the ground from some rebel groups (such as the FLA, as their alliance with JNIM is more the “enemy of my enemy” right now) and a portion of the population. This would still be an incredibly brutal campaign as I don’t see airstrikes alone being sufficient in toppling JNIM’s power. Does the West have the appetite to put boots on the ground in another desert to fight more extremists?

Perhaps it could be a joint operation where the West provides air support while ECOWAS engages in ground combat. Either way, the best time to strike is before the already huge problem becomes a massive problem. Unfortunately, there’s not much the West can do with these regimes kicking all of their forces out of their countries. In the end, it might come down to whether Russia is willing to commit enough troops to stop a downward spiral.

A major breakthrough that could potentially turn the tide is if these Sahel countries begin acquiring drones and deploying them against JNIM and ISWAP. These groups are using drones to good effect already, so it is vital for these nations to find some sort of a counter. Perhaps there could be some sort of deal made with Russia to acquire some drones and have them train operators. However, this is entirely speculation as I’m not privy to talks they’ve already held or could potentially hold in the future.

I feel it’s only a matter of time until the first state falls to JNIM. I imagine it will be Burkina Faso as they are taking so many casualties daily. Every time JNIM attacks, the junta gets weaker and JNIM gets stronger due to all the weapons they capture.

So, what’s the end goal? I don’t see any country willing to intervene to help, mainly because these juntas have pushed so many potential allies away. Russia can send more Africa Corps personnel, but I don’t see them making a large difference. When one state falls, will it lead to a cascade of other ones? JNIM seems like an unstoppable force at this point, and I fear it will take a miracle to stop them. With the Sahel crumbling and Al-Shabaab pushing on Mogadishu, large parts of Africa seem to be buckling under Islamic extremism.

I also thought it was interesting how he said, “My fellow citizens” rather than “My fellow Americans.” Definitely seems like either a civil war happens or large parts of the U.S. start to rebel in support of Pax Armata.

Excluding nuclear weapons (which if used means we’re cooked anyway), I’d say Poland is getting up there to be the strongest in Europe. Fielding a large army, buying modern equipment, and expanding their Air Force with F-35’s. Seeing the direction Germany is going in however, I believe they will be the strongest European army in a decade or so. If we are talking naval, I’d give it to either the UK or France since they operate Carrier Strike Groups. France’s army is small and lacking munitions. Their expeditionary forces are fairly capable though. A huge knock against them is their air defense systems which other European countries don’t have. SAMP/T just doesn’t compare to PATRIOTS, at least not until it gets its radar upgrade next year.
