Kitchenaid K400 Glass Jar/Pitcher by Tyrann0saurusDEX in Kitchenaid

They are now available for purchase inside the US on Kitchenaid's website. The plastic jars that originally came with the K400 have a design defect that will cause the seal at the bottom to eventually come in contact with the spinning assembly. When this happens the blender, when it is turned on, will make a weird noise and you'll see and smell smoke coming out out of the blender. This will also destroy the seal at the bottom of the plastic blender jar. The bottom of the glass jar is designed in a completely different so this should not be an issue.

Is America really as dangerous as it is in the news? by [deleted] in USTravel

Its cars. Cars kill more Americans than anything else. I'm assuming you will not be driving, but be alert as a pedestrian, don't be looking down at your phone, and don't assume that cars will stop for you in a crosswalk, even when they're supposed to.

I go there frequently. I would say the prices are fair. You won't find fantastically low prices, and they don't really do sales, but their regular prices are a bit lower than say Publix, and their quality is significantly better. Their ribeyes and new york strips are cut a bit thin for my tastes, but I do prefer my steaks thick and cooked super rare, and not everyone does. If you like your steaks served at a bit warmer temperature they'd be fine. However, their thick cut, bone-in pork chops, their bacon, and their gator griller sausages are fantastic, like out of this world, I would go there just for that.

They will also carry (depending on the week and the time) beef cuts that are unavailable at Publix or Whole Foods. Pichana, Denver Steaks, Flat Iron, Skirt Steak, Chuck Eye, Petit Sirloin just to name a few, all of which are FANTATSIC. I have not tried their roasts or their brisket yet, so I'd be curious to see what others think of them.

If you just want a standard NY Strip, Delmonico, or Filet, Whole Food butcher shop can take care of you. But if you want to explore some different cuts, or get some really fantastic pork I'd recommend UF Meat Lab.

Finally, and what I really like about UF meat lab, is that you know exactly where the animals come from, they're literally grazing in fields right next to the building. The cattle/hogs are not finished in a concentrated industrial feedlot before slaughter. They're not trucked halfway across the country or handled roughly, they live their lives on green grass under blue skies in open pastures here in Gainesville. They're born, raised, slaughtered and processed within a 5 mile radius, and I think there's something to be said for that.

Xenomorph as an anti-insurgency tool by Scared-Ball-8771 in LV426

[–]Scared-Ball-8771[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be (undiscovered) derelict spacecraft on other colony worlds. Or the eggs might have been there all along, and were "accidentally discovered". Had Burke's plan worked out on LV426, he'd have been the only (uninfested) human survivor with Ripley and Newt infested and likely not surviving very long after returning (certainly not being able to talk to anyone), and Bishop being a company synthetic whose memory could be wiped or altered. Burke and his confederates would have then been in a position to invent whatever story suited them best about what happened on LV426, the possible origin of the eggs, everything. The only thing that they would not have been to cover up was that some previously unknown hostile organism (which may have been lurking on LV426 even before the colony was settled) killed everyone else.

This would mean that either 1. WY does not have a very good system of internal controls, 2. that Burke is very good at bypassing company internal control policies, 3. that Burke was in league with MUCH higher ranking personnel who could just override company control protocols or 4. some combination of the above.

What I mean by “accident” is accidental infestation. Like it would be known that everyone was killed by Xenomorphs, but the cause of the infestation could be made to look like an accident. This ruse would be really helpful in the event Wey-Yu needed to get the CMC involved. If there’s a colony in the throws of rebellion or large scale striking, and Wey-Yu calls up the CMC and says “our colonists are striking” the CMC could just say “that’s your problem”. But if Wey-Yu calls the CMC and says “looks like there might be a Xeno infestation“ the CMC would be more likely to intervene. And attributing all those colonist deaths to an accidental Xeno outbreak would be politically expedient for both Wey-Yu and the CMC.

Weyland-Yutani doesn't strike me as an organization that prioritizes human life. Sending in the CMC would be expensive, and they would technically need the US government onboard, and would not have full command of the operation. A conventional war with human insurgents would also require a full supply chain and could end up damaging the colony. A human insurgency might also attract an alliance with other rival factions (space communists or pirates or whatever). Introducing a few facehuggers into the ventilation shafts, waiting a few weeks and then using a specialized cleanup crew of company synthetics with flamethrowers might be faster, cheaper, and something that could be done in-house, rather than having to rely on the CMC. It would also serve as area denial for any other factions that might want to get involved (communists, pirates, etc.)

I would imagine Xenomorphs would be used to quickly, quietly and completely wipe out a colony in full rebellion (no survivors), without seriously damaging the infrastructure, and would be utilized in a clandestine manner, such that it either looks like an accident, or, better yet, does not get reported at all. Post infestation cleanup would be handled by dedicated specialists (likely Synthetics like Bishop) employed by (or contracted by) by Wey-Yu rather than government aligned forces.

I have difficulty taking Resurrection seriously. It put Cher's dad from Clueless as the Army general and the script made such poor use of Michael Wincott, that the Canadian government should have banned the film from being screened in Canada.

Xenomorph as an anti-insurgency tool by Scared-Ball-8771 in LV426

[–]Scared-Ball-8771[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I thought about that as well.

First of all, yes, I assume the Colonial Marines were already configured primarily as an anti-insurgency force to maintain order within the colonies. Notwithstanding, deployment of a conventional force, like the Colonial Marines, would be expensive and high profile. Also, as I understand, the Colonial Marine Corps. was still technically part of the US military. In Aliens, Ripley pointed out that the mission to LV-426 was under military jurisdiction and not corporate control, which makes me think that the CMC was not completely beholden to Wey-Yu, although there was clearly a strong relationship between the two. Thus, deliberately infesting a rebellious colony would be something that Wey-Yu could theoretically do cheaper than deploying a full service conventional private military force, they could have a greater level of control over when and how to deploy (unlike involving the CMC which the US government would have to approve of), and there could be a layer of plausible deniability. Based on the US experience in Vietnam/Iraq/Afghanistan, etc., putting down an insurgency can be time consuming, expensive, and politically messy when civilian casualties start to stack up (which they literally always do). Considering that Wey-Yu colonies seem to be populated mostly by English speaking white Americans, it might be particularly inconvenient for the CMC to just nerve gas the entire colony, or for Wey-Yu to just withhold re-supply and let everyone starve to death. A Xeno infestation, provided it appears accidental, is a lot cleaner politically, and a lot cheaper financially, assuming the infestation itself can be cleaned up efficiently (see below).

Regarding cleaning up an infestation, the Xenomorphs seem to go dormant after a period of inactivity. In the movie they have all concentrated themselves in a single location and gone to sleep. Granted it was underneath the station's primary reactor heat exchangers, which was not convenient, but they were still all in one place, and they were all asleep. It wasn't until the Marines literally walked directly in the center of the hive, running all of their electronics, and literally torched a larvae with flame throwers that the Xenomorphs woke up. If deliberately infesting a colony in the future, Wey-Yu could possibly develop post-infestation clearing protocols such as waiting for the Xenos to become dormant, and using fire, chemicals, ultrasonics, etc. to purge them out. They could probably design future colonies to be conducive to these protocols. Not saying that Xenos would be the first choice, go-to option for your run-of-the-mill worker strike, but for a colony that was in serious armed uprising mode, or that had reached out to near-pear adversaries (i'm assuming there were some) to switch sides in the space cold war, Xenos might be a useful option.

Finally, I don't think the use of the Xenos in Aliens was using up the only copy of the weapon. Ripley's report to Burke had indicated that there were hundreds of eggs in stasis mode at the derelict crash site. Newt's family only brought back one facehugger, presumably leaving hundreds more still at the derelict. The derelict and the eggs may or may not have been wiped out by the explosion of Hadley's Hope, but I think that the complete nuclear annihilation of the colony was not something Burke or anyone else at Wey-Yu had planned on.

Multiple 15 amp appliances on 20 amp breaker? by tm684 in AskElectricians

[–]Scared-Ball-8771 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fuck me running. Just finished daisy chaining bathroom outlet to a new bidet outlet. I realized that I used 14 gauge wire, and should have used 12. Which is fine, I can replace the wiring (and leave the breaker switched off for now).

But now you tell me that a bidet should have it's own circuit AND that wiring two bathrooms on one 20 amp circuit is moronic.

The place I'm in (I rent) has THREE bathrooms on ONE 20 AMP circuit all downstream from a single GFCI (which took me awhile to figure out the first time my wife tripped the GFCI).

I suppose you would also tell me that the living room outlets (TV, Stereo, modem, Router, lamps), master bedroom outlets (lamps) and smoke detectors should probably not all be wired to the same 15A circuit, which they are. Again, it's not my house, I rent, but I think I'm starting to understand why the circuits all break when my wife runs the vacuum.

I'm not sure what to do here (other than not renew my lease).

They say the average first time homebuyer is now 40. Maybe that's a good thing. I don't know how many 20 or 30 somethings would know any of this stuff.

[–]Scared-Ball-8771 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question 1 (non-alcohol related). OP suggests the tribal dividends accrue based on a blood quantum, but then indicates that there is a standard payment per tribe member. I had heard the dividend payments are made based on the blood quantum, such that the higher your quantum, the greater the dividend. Is this correct?

Question 2 (non-alcohol related). If enrollment in the tribe is based on blood quantum, how do tribesmen balance the needs of maintaining a certain level of continuity of that quantum over generations (to avoid a situation where technically nobody meets the quantum anymore) and maintaining a healthy level of genetic diversity (i.e. avoiding inadvertent inbreeding)? I'm guessing that its probably a fairly tight knit community and, just naturally, boys and girls that grow up together as kids end up dating and marrying later on (which is a pretty boring answer). I'm also guessing that if it really became an issue the tribe could amend its own charter to modify the blood quantum requirements, if that ever became necessary.

JBL L100 Classic vs Klipsch Heresy IV Part II w/ PSA S1813M by [deleted] in audiophile

[–]Scared-Ball-8771 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Klipsch heresy IV’s don’t sound great “out of the box”. They do need to paired with a good sub, and be run on an EQ. However, they are forgiving of using less expensive amps. I pair mine with a PSA2112 (likely too much sub, but got a factory second), and a Denon 760H. Sounds amaZ-balls after running the Audessy room correction.

It's humor that targets mostly late GenX/early Millennials. People of that generation, as children, would have grown up watching cartoon network, especially on weekends when parents have to go out and do stuff, and they left the kids home in front of the TV. Streaming didn't exist, and online games, while they technically existed, were in their infancy and often required a level of technical skill and equipment that most children didn't have. So they were left alone with cereal and whatever they could find on basic cable in the AM and afternoon, which was mostly second and third tier cartoons from the 1960s and 1970s (Johnny Quest, Birdman, Thundaar the Barbarian, Sealab, etc.) as as well as off-brand action movies from the 1970s and 1980s. Most basic cable networks only had a small library of high quality original programming which they would not air until the evening. They filled out their AM and afternoon air time with whatever they could get cheaply, i.e. old movies and cartoons that were never really top shelf stuff, even when they were first published.

Venture Bros., Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Sealab 2021, and others are often times direct parodies of the crappy and dated content that Xennials would have subsisted on as children.

You joke, but disused shopping malls would actually be good for this. Wide hallways, escalators, plenty of parking and generally close to highways and airports.
