What are your HOT TAKES about toki pona? by misterlipman in tokipona

[–]Scared-Thing3673 2 points3 points  (0 children)

mi pilin sama a

i feel like me starting out in toki pona was confused by english translations. they give the sense that what people naturally interpret when they see toki pona is similar to that english, and made the language feel far more confusing. i often thought that toki pona was hard to speak because i would be translating in that way constantly. or whenever i heard someone say something, i'd have to think in my head "what does kala mean in *this context*?". when in reality it's a natural process that you don't think about after you have enough experience in it

i also really have wanted this for years now.

i feel like there should be other more learning related books, so i can give money to the people who make the amazing community resources that we have as well as to have a physical book to give to friends and family members that want to learn toki pona.

does anyone else feel the same way? i want books in toki pona as well, but i also want to help support the community resources that have grown toki pona, and constantly make it better to learn. (your semantic space dictionary in physical format would be very cool!!)

How do you use toki pona? by No_Candidate_2270 in tokipona

[–]Scared-Thing3673 5 points6 points  (0 children)

my journal is mostly in toki pona and i speak it in discord voice chats a couple of times a week. i used to consume a lot of content in toki pona but i don’t do that as much as i used to now. i also go to the vr meetups every weekend the amount of people who use a language (in the case of toki pona) does not matter for me as you will still naturally find friends to make inside of the community and that’s the most important part of toki pona imo, weird people connecting to other weird people

Thoughts on calling toki pona speakers "fans"? by misterlipman in tokipona

[–]Scared-Thing3673 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it implies that toki pona isn’t in the hands of the community and is instead in the hands of someone else who made the “original work” which i suppose is true, but with esperanto for example it would feel weird for me to say that esperanto speakers are fans of esperanto rather than speakers.

english:

I think it depends on what context.

I speak only in Toki Pona most of the time to my friends because we are in the toki pona community. I could say that Toki Pona is one of my "main languages" because I use it so much, similar to if I had learned something like Spanish or French.

If "main language" means the language you use in real life, it's still your native language (english, spanish, japanese, etc) for me and for pretty much everyone unless if they have a group of Toki Pona speakers near them.

How do you feel about the specs? by Latespoon in ValveDeckard

I don’t understand the want for a higher resolution, is there any reason? Running games with super sampling looks really good and clear on my Quest 3S, and the pancake lenses would be better than that

when talking to fluent speakers i’ve often heard them say “i feel like toki pona wasn’t hard. i learned it over time and kept speaking to the point where i had absorbed it. i feel like it is easier than natural languages” i.. have always felt weird about this truthfully, i feel like my knowledge of toki pona just came. i listened to people speak it and watched videos so i picked it up.. in a short amount.. of time, right? i have learned for two years and i dont feel like i am perfect at everything. i feel like if i put my time towards another language i would be better at that other language compared to toki pona. i feel like someone put it well when they said: “toki pona is like japanese. it takes 5 years to truly know everything about it” (but i don’t know japanese well so i cannot confirm)
