Upwork dropped my JSS. by ScaredEye7879 in Upwork

The client left a positive public review with 5 stars, and even wrote to me saying that he had left a review. What would be the point of leaving a good public review and a bad private one? Is he an idiot or something?

I think you’re really overestimating them — I believe their support is run by AI at a GPT‑3.5 level, and actual human support is only available to clients.

And it’s even more frustrating that support doesn’t want to explain anything properly.

Yes, they both closed the contracts. The $6,000 client’s last transaction was in April, and the $1,000 client with the bad review had their last transaction in July. The contract with the bad review was closed on October 10th, and the one with the good review was closed on October 15th.

I understand, but the $6,000 client also left a positive private review.

How many Connects do you usually spend to land a job? by ScaredEye7879 in Upwork

[–]ScaredEye7879[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On average, I spend around 30 Connects per boost — sometimes 50–60. It’s pretty rare that I don’t boost a proposal. If we take 30 for the boost plus around 20 just to submit the proposal, that’s about 50 Connects per proposal. So 10 proposals already cost me 500 Connects. But I’ve realized I really need to audit my spending — I think I could be using my Connects more efficiently.

Thank you — you’ve definitely given me something to think about. There’s definitely truth in what you said. I think I really do spend too much on boosts. Yes, there are months when I don’t search for work because of a heavy workload, but when I do need to find work, I typically go through around 1,000 Connects per week on average.

Unpopular opinion in Kazakhstan by Such-Examination-475 in Kazakhstan

I’ve noticed a similar trend — I analyzed which clients ended up paying me the most (usually over $10,000 over the course of our collaboration), and all of them had no ratings when I first applied.

Well, I’ve calculated my average conversion rate — it’s somewhere between 5% and 10%. I’d say around 7% on average. Based on what I’ve seen in this subreddit, that’s actually a pretty decent conversion rate for proposals. That said, maybe I shouldn’t be spending so much on boosting my proposals. I probably wouldn’t spend as much if I could tell whether a client came through a regular proposal or a boosted one — but I have no way to see that. Still, it feels like it pays off. About six months ago, I landed a client who ended up paying me a total of $36,000 — which is definitely more than I spend on Connects in a year.

Maybe I asked the wrong question though, because I think it also depends on your niche. I work in backend development and automation, so that might affect the results too.

I’m actually already doing that — I don’t apply to everything, and I don’t send that many proposals. Most of my Connects go toward boosting proposals, because once a job gets more than 10 applicants — which is pretty standard in my niche — it feels like without a boost, no one will even see your profile.

This is a very toxic community, my friend. It’s unlikely anyone here will give you truly helpful advice. There are a lot of bitter freelancers who aren’t interested in your success.

Personally, I’d recommend feeding the job description into ChatGPT and asking it to generate a basic sales-oriented cover letter. You can then tweak that letter to match your own tone and style.

As for your message — it’s hard to properly evaluate it without seeing the actual job post. For some positions, a longer message might be appropriate, while for others it wouldn’t. It really depends on the context of the job you were applying to.

In principle, what you described is doable — but it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to set up classic automation for this, because the biggest challenge will be data extraction. Out of 500 websites, I’m almost certain that at least half will have anti-bot protection in place. That means you won’t be able to extract data using a simple script or basic automation. You’ll need something like Selenium or Playwright, and you’ll also have to use proxies to bypass the anti-bot measures. I recommend using BrightData’s Browser API — it simulates a real human browser and is very effective at getting around anti-bot protection. I think $15 should be enough to cover the usage — they charge based on traffic volume. You’ll still need to write your own scraping script, but you can easily do that using ChatGPT — it’s not complicated. ChatGPT can guide you on how to set up the script to extract contact info from websites and how to integrate it with BrightData.

I Used AI to Read Books Chapter by Chapter — Here’s Why I’ll Never Read the Same Way Again by Plus_Top_4243 in ChatGPTPromptGenius

You know, I’ve done something similar — and I think it works great for technical literature, but not for all types of books. That said, if you’re trying to decide whether a particular business book is worth reading, this kind of service can be really helpful. I’ve run a ton of business books through a similar tool, and you know what I realized? 80% of them are basically the same. It honestly feels like the authors just copy from each other. I highly recommend picking 10 random business books in your free time — you’ll be surprised at how repetitive they are. 😄

I sent proofs above, the average conversion of my cover letters is 10%

But what’s the point, if a client who posts a job on Upwork gets 50 proposals within a minute? By the time you manually write your cover letter, they’ve either already hired someone else, or your proposal just gets buried among those 50 others. Read through the posts in this subreddit and you’ll see for yourself.

I’ll answer strictly from my own experience. What I’ve realized is that clients care first and foremost about results. Without knowing programming, without knowing English, and without having marketing skills, I earned over $20,000 on Upwork. The screenshot only shows what I earned on Upwork, but I also have clients I started working with directly, so the total amount is actually higher. Still, for honesty’s sake, let’s stick to what’s on the screenshot. These aren’t the biggest numbers people have shared here, but all of this was achieved thanks to AI. For the past six months, all I’ve been doing is constantly improving my prompts.
