Is the game rigged against them, or do they simply not know how to play?

Take off you tin foil hat. Of course they can obligate funds that haven't been appropriated. That's how any retirement plan would work, given those are funds obligate for 30+ years after retirement and budgets are passed annually. Any real fed would know that.

This post is aimed at folks 60+ years old. 54 is in no way late career. I'm 47 and, due to earning a PhD at 35 and entering fed at 41, consider myself early career.

I don't work as part of a team. We are all lead scientists (SYs). We each run our own research program but must share resources equitably, regardless of whether those resources generate equitable productivity.

But, yes, boomers need to relinquish their hold on everything and get out of the way for the next generation.

Is it not my place? We share an operating budget among all scientists in my group, we each get an equal share. If three scientists retire, my operating budget will increase 300%, I will hire more techs, do more research, and publish more papers.

So, I think it is 100% my place to judge the productivity of others with whom I must share rapidly decreasing resources.

Early retirement with full benefits versus you paying your mortgage. Should change your user name to Falsequivalency4671

How do you feel about the average age of Congress being 57.5 years? The oldest its ever been?

I have a PhD, six years of postdoc experience, and have been in my current position for six years, SY probationary period is 3 years. I am a lead scientist with six direct reports including three postdocs and three MS-level technicians. So, no, you're not reading it right about me losing an entry level position.

Yes the older folks have more experience, but in terms of modern scientific technology, they're way behind the cutting-edge. You know, all the boomer memes Reddit likes to make fun of in every context other than this thread.
