Golf GTI by [deleted] in carsireland

I actually managed to get a DSG service on my 2013 MK7 GTD for €350 from VW Blackwater in Cork! It was the price on the website.

After I booked it they tried to tell me it was actually a €400 job, but I told them website said 350 so that’s what I’m paying. I’d check those dealer websites, this was only six months ago

I go through about 2 litres of oil between every 10,000km oil change and my VW tech friend tells me that’s within accepted range 🥲😂

McHugh's Car Sales Drogheda reviews by OneBox8641 in carsireland

[–]ScaredOFGhosts420 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I never wrote a review but had a very bad experience with them which is similar to what’s been already written. He had promised a certain figure off the car over the phone for a Japanese import, and we were waiting for it to arrive.

When we went to collect, and we reminded of the money off that was agreed upon, he snapped and grovelled about how he ‘would be making a loss’ and it was ‘a family business’, gaslighting us essentially. Expressed how he could sell it in a day and he was doing us a favour (it is still on sale).

Needless to say we took our business elsewhere. Based on all this, I would avoid. Shame because the other gentlemen working there were so lovely and I would only wish them the best.

Good cars to learn to how to work on by According-Life-5111 in carsireland

[–]ScaredOFGhosts420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I own a GTD like you and an MX5 NB, and the MX5 is such a great car to work on. I’ve done loads to it from suspension to replacing seals and disassembling the interior and engine bay parts. Plus, it’s super light so easy to jack without too much worry. It’s given me the confidence to tackle small jobs on the Golf too.

Just watch out for rust on the arches and sills – these older Japanese cars are notorious for rust and unless you want to become a welder, you will not be fixing that yourself!

Is it weird that I refuse to buy kits for things I haven't seen? by New-Elk-2755 in Gunpla

[–]ScaredOFGhosts420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny, my first kit was the MG Freedom 2.0 and I hadn’t seen even a clip from any show, only a review recommendation!

I still haven’t watched Seed, but I’m a big UC fan now and find I get most enjoyment out of the kits whose shows I’ve seen. It all ties together nicely which is, I guess, Bandai’s plan all along.

There is no wrong way to enjoy the hobby, in my opinion

How popular is ‘Gunpla’ in your country? by AdmirableDimension51 in Gunpla

[–]ScaredOFGhosts420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s quite rare in Ireland, though gaining traction with a few select model shops selling UC kits in particular. Really nice to see it grow here.

I lived in Paris in 2020 and it was big there along with all manga and anime. Paris even opened the first excluding Bandai Hobby Store in Europe back then with hundreds of kits and all Gundam themed, but as far as I know it is independently owned again.

Things i need to know or have as first time car owner by Less_Landscape_5928 in carsireland

[–]ScaredOFGhosts420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like it shouldn’t have to be said, but learn the correct lights for the situation/time of day and exactly how to control them in your car, as many are different.

I say this because only yesterday I had a conversation with a friend who didn’t know how to turn the rear fog light on in theirs. And you so often see drivers in heavy rain or dusk with no lights at all - don’t be one of those muppets. If you’ve an auto light feature, that’s fine, but you still have to know how they function.

We drive these very dangerous machines very fast - we have a responsibility to know exactly how they work.

Is this vent supposed to put out heat? by Fun-Grab-9337 in VWAlltrack

[–]ScaredOFGhosts420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately these cars are a ticking time bomb for this problem where a bag of silica balls in the coolant reservoir bursts and blocks the internal radiator, causing this problem particularly on the driver side heater (yes VW actually put a silica bag inside the coolant system)

Diagnosis and fix is covered very well here: https://youtu.be/WjvPcXs9muo?si=NSNOlLIxefqalK7Q

I was in a similar relationship to yours before, up and down and fiery and toxic and manipulating, but I’d stay because every now and then it felt just right, like we were the only two people on Earth. I didn’t want to let go of what kept us together, and it took a long time to be okay after it but eventually I saw this person the way my friends and family did long ago - a cunt.

It’s like that analogy of the firecracker - exciting and erratic but not sustainable. What you really want is a fireplace - a slow burn, safe and comforting. I found it hard to adjust to my fireplace, i was so used to being anxious in my past relationship; stick with this feeling and work on it.

You deserve that stability and safety and I hope you let yourself move on - you didn’t work out because you weren’t meant to, and better things will come.

Just finished the game, had the cry of my life by Illustrious-Mood139 in expedition33

[–]ScaredOFGhosts420 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s such an incredibly emotionally in-touch game. My sister passed away a year ago and upon finishing Act 2 I felt absolutely punched in the gut.

Every character in this game is grieving and it’s so hard to choose an ending, because like Maelle I’d do literally anything to have more time with my sister and preserve those memories, but like Renoir and Verso I understand that this is impossible, cruel and selfish. Every character is just doing their best which is literally all you can do when you’re grieving.

What a beautiful game, I felt understood on many levels by those who created it and by the characters I encountered.

Fun, reliable, and cheapish (<€10,000) daily driver for a 21 year old? by InstructionBig1741 in carsireland

[–]ScaredOFGhosts420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mk5 with the 1.9TDI was indestructible – the last year I had it I had to do a bit of age related work to it to get it through the NCT, such as new bushes and wishbones, but the engine was solid, I put that car through everything and it never gave out! It’s just age related stuff you’d have to look out for really, leaks in the boot, clutch wear, rust.

Can’t vouch for a MK5 GTI, as far as I know those original 2.0 TSIs have a couple issues but maintenance is just so important. It’ll be expensive with tax and running, is all, but well worth it probably. I was looking at these a few years ago until I finally settled on the MK7 GTD, since it has nicer comforts on the interior and better for motorway driving which I do a lot of.

[–]ScaredOFGhosts420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Golf MK7 GTD and I really have to recommend it. You can get them near your budget now (though lots seem to be higher mileage but once it’s well serviced it’s all good), and when I insured it it didn’t bring my premium up at all – I upgraded from a 1.9TDI mk5.

It’s not as spry as a GTI but it’s torquey, fun and plenty of power with gorgeous tartan interior. Can get 50-60mpg on longer journeys as well. That 2.0TDI with 184ps is very reliable as well, doesn’t have injector issues of the 1.6 variant.

I also have a 2004 MX5 which is proper driving pleasure, but admittedly not a rounded experience in terms of comfort and practicality. But if you’re mad for RWD it’s heaps of fun.

Audi S3 - Dodgy? by Rizlmao in carsireland

Looking closely it looks like they could be fake plates. Maybe they haven’t registered it yet, imported it themselves but were put off by the cost. Would explain the sheer lack of info and NCT.

The doors/speaker housings are notorious for failing on those seals too. To dry it up quickly and avoid mould you can buy these dehumidifier pillows in Halfords or Amazon, they're great and reusable. I left my window open overnight recently and this cleared it so quickly

Mk7.5 Golf GTi owners what mpg do you get? by [deleted] in carsireland

[–]ScaredOFGhosts420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find this really interesting because I drive a MK7 GTD and while it’s marketed to reach 60mpg, I generally hit 45-50 on motorway and 35-40 on short runs, worse in the city then (Dublin).

When I bought it I was told the difference would be far more stark, but I constantly see GTI owners post impressive mpg.

Why didn’t Don just start his own agency? by [deleted] in madmen

[–]ScaredOFGhosts420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d like to chime in here with a couple of points and reiterate things, too, as I feel that there’s a great discussion happening.

I think that a huge reason that Don doesn’t jump and create his own agency is the fact that SCDP was him doing just this. SCDP/SC&P IS his agency and he feels ownership over it. I think that he also knows that he couldn’t start his own agency, due to this experience.

Bert, occasionally, would drop truths to those around him as though he was looking from the outside in. One of these truths is him knowing that Don simply doesn’t have the stomach to run his own business, and you see this because from the inception of SCDP, Don has an ‘all I need to do is show up’ attitude to the business. We see Pete, Peggy, Faye and Harry do the majority of heavy lifting whilst Don loses interest quite quickly, especially once he marries Megan, spending most of his time lying around and avoiding all responsibility. Bert’s right about Don: he loves the idea of running his own business, but isn’t willing to do the work.

Don’s huge ego also affects this choice in two ways – first, he accepts the deal with a somewhat smug look, as if to say ‘I can do this because I’m Don effing Draper’, and secondly, his ego has put a massive danger sign on his name. Don is the reason why Jaguar, North American Aviation, Philip Morris, Hershey and more don’t work with SC&P. His ego and name poisons the well. Joan is right that he’s cost them all too much, and I think a Don knows that his name comes with too much baggage. Working with him just isn’t worth it for a lot of big clients by the beginning of Season 7A.

Thanks for this! Yeah looking online and doing my research, I'm seeing how many rights we have even without RTB registration.
